Obi Amadi – Unite/CPHVA Lead Professional Officer Maggie Breen – Macmillan Clinical I’m writing this month’s editorial after attending my first CPHVA Awards Nurse Specialist – Children and Young People, The Royal Marsden Hospital NHS on Friday 8 April. In spite of a very last-minute change of venue (huge Foundation Trust recognition and thanks to the events team for handling this with aplomb!), Toity Deave – Associate Professor for the afternoon was a great success, returning once again to OXO2 on Family and Child Health, Centre for Child and Adolescent Health, University of the London’s South Bank. West of England, Bristol Having attended other awards ceremonies within the healthcare sector, I Barbara Evans – Community Nursery Nurse, Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust am always struck by how humble and unassuming its members are. Despite Gavin Fergie – Unite/CPHVA Professional the dedication and tirelessness of the nominees, a display of genuine shock Officer for Scotland and Northern Ireland and emotion never fails to ensue at the realisation that their hard work Brenda Poulton – Emerita Professor of Public Health Nursing, University of Ulster has been recognised by colleagues and peers. The CPHVA Awards were Janet Taylor – Specialist Health Visitor no exception: as we interviewed each of the winners immediately off stage from receiving their Public Health, South Eastern Health and tropies we witnessed tears, speechlessness and gushing excitement as they attempted to put Social Care Trust, Belfast their feelings into words. Surrinder Bains – Health Visitor and Visiting Lecturer, Bath Spa University It’s as though, in this climate of uncertainty, those working in public health are genuinely Louise Rowlinson – School Nurse, staggered to receive recognition or reward of any kind. But deserve it they do, and every single Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust nominee for this year’s Awards, whether a winner or not, is worthy of that recognition for their Elaine Haycock-Stuart – Senior Lecturer, valuable contribution to our healthcare system. These are the people who make lives better and School of Health in Social Science, to whom we should be eternally grateful. A round-up of this fantastic afternoon celebrating the University of Edinburgh Lucretia Baptiste – Independent School cream of community healthcare can be found from page 15 of this issue. Nurse What also struck me while sitting at this celebratory lunch, surrounded by school nurses, health Louise Condon – Associate Professor, College of Human and Health Services, visitors and community nursery nurses is the stories I heard around the work you do, the exciting Swansea University projects you’re engaged in and, inevitably, the challenges you face. A common thread among those England-based practitioners I spoke to was concerns around commissioning. The transfer Editorial Team of commissioning to local authorities has brought about significant changes for many of you, and Louise Naughton – Managing Editor [email protected] overwhelmingly, it seems, not for the good of the children and families with whom you work. 0207 878 2403 We’d like to hear more about the changes and challenges that face your area as a result of Helen Bird – Editor [email protected] local authority commissioning. Whether the changes affect the integration of the 0 to 19 service 0207 074 7768 now or in the future or staffing reductions within your service, we want to hear from you in order Alice Harrold – Reporter to get a better picture of the landscape across England. In this issue, for example, a community [email protected] nursery nurse describes how the changes have affected her profession and the structure of the 0207 878 2417 service (see page 22). Professor Jane Appleton Professional Editor Of course, aside from commissioning we’re keen to hear more about the situation across the [email protected] rest of the UK too, so please also get in touch if you’re a practitioner working in Wales, Scotland or Anne-Marie Harriot – Art Editor Northern Ireland to share your experiences of public health nursing in these challenging times.
