CONNECT SELECT WEEKEND EDITION A wide selection of interesting and trending stories – rip ‘em, read ‘em and post ‘em! FRIDAY, MAY 28, 2021 TODAY IS… • NATIONAL ROAD TRIP DAY (Friday before Memorial Day) Roooooooooad Trippppppp! The Friday before Memorial Day is National Road Trip Day and the kickoff to the summer road trip season. Triple-A says 60-million Americans will hit the road this holiday weekend (hope you like traffic!). DID YOU KNOW?…In the last year, 9-out-of-10 Americans have taken at least one road trip. • NATIONAL WIG OUT DAY Dust off that 11-dollar toupee and wear it proudly. • NATIONAL HAMBURGER DAY The hamburger was invented in New Haven, Connecticut in 1900 by a lunch wagon owner named Louis Lassen. He came up with it for a customer who was in a rush and wanted something ‘to go,’ so he slapped some ground steak between two pieces of bread, and the rest is history BURGER FUN FACTS: • Americans eat about 50-billion burgers a year and, on average, Americans eat burgers three times a week (and you wonder why we’re fat?!). • Almost two-thirds of all sandwiches sold worldwide are actually hamburgers. • A Minnesota casino set the world record for the largest hamburger ever made. It weighed just over a ton and was 10-feet in diameter (try eating that in the car!). • McDonalds sells 75 hamburgers every second! SATURDAY IS… • PUT-A-PILLOW-ON-YOUR-FRIDGE DAY The weird annual tradition of literally putting a pillow on top of your fridge. It’s supposed to bring you a year of good luck and prosperity (while making your pillow smell a little freezer burnt). People used to put them INSIDE their fridge, but that was when pillows were much smaller and people didn’t care about having nice things. PILLOW FUN FACTS: • Pillows have been around for more than nine-thousand years. Back then they were made of rock (good luck fluffing that!). • The ancient Egyptians used pillows to keep their heads off the ground so bugs wouldn’t crawl up their noses. • Pillows didn’t become a household essential until the early 1900s when they started making them out of cotton instead of hay. • END OF THE MIDDLE AGES DAY Historians consider this day in 1453 to be the official end of the Middle Ages and the start of the Renaissance. Education became a big deal with science and language studied more broadly. They still didn’t have toilets or clean water, but it was a start. • INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY Jazz emerged in the 1920s as a combination of ragtime, blues and marching band music (but way cooler than it sounds). It’s believed the word ‘Jazz’ used to be an old baseball term that meant ‘a fighting spirit.’ DID YOU KNOW?….A study by Johns Hopkins University found that when jazz musicians improvise, the part of the brain responsible for inhibition and self-censoring gets shut off (so that might be a good time to ask them to help you move). It's been two whole years since the last Indy 500. They’ll allow 40-percent capacity at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway - that’s still 135-thousand fans, the largest enclosed gathering of people since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. No surprise: they’re sold out! • NATIONAL MINT JULEP DAY Mint, bourbon, sugar and water. It’s been around since the 17-hundreds. Must be good if it’s lasted this long! FUN FACT: More than 120-thousand mint juleps are sold in Louisville during Kentucky Derby weekend. • LOOMIS DAY Honoring the guy who patented ‘wireless telegraphy,’ AKA: “Radio.” Mahlon Loomis beat Marconi’s radio patent by 25 years (but Marconi still gets all the credit). • HOLE IN MY BUCKET DAY (Why does this sound dirty to me?) Celebrating the goofy kids’ song about a hole in a bucket (dear, Liza). The song actually dates back to the 1700s. It was originally a German story about a conversation between ‘Henry’ and ‘Liza’. He’s telling her he has to fix a hole in his bucket and keeps asking for her advice (boy, times were simpler back then!). Seriously! Amazon calls it the ‘ZenBooth.’ They say employees can go inside and ‘focus on their mental and emotional well-being’ by reading a bunch of pamphlets or staring at some potted plants. There’s also a chair and a fan. (Maybe they shoulda put a toilet in there since Amazon employees have reported using bottles to relieve themselves).
