The early morning event was a celebration of not only the engines birthday, but recognition of the men recruited 40+ years ago to restore it. And it was a celebration of the hard work that has kept steam alive and well at all the Disney parks. Later at Disney University, the Society members took part in a lively discussion between Michael and Roy. Continued on Platform 4 t PLATFORM 3 WINTER 2016 BOB fallier u MEMBER SINCE 2014 Continued from Platform 3 This year included a presentation by three gentlemen, all much younger than most of us, who have been extremely influential in the hands-on restoration of steam engines across the United States. These included Joe Darby, who among other accomplishments spent two years as a volunteer at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum assisting in the restoration of ex-Southern Railway 4501. Also presenting was Jason Sobczynski who has been passionately involved with historic railway preservation since 1992. He has contributed heavily to the restoration of 12 steam locomotives in the US. He acted as Co-Project Manager of the Southern 4501 and as primary contractor of operation and maintenance on NKP 765. In his own words: My presentation for the Blue Ridge Chapter, NRHS, at the July meeting is entitled "Winter along the Wasatch - 2010." Robert Kaplan and I flew to Salt Lake City on February 3, 2010, for the Nevada Northern winter charter that weekend. We spent the next six days on Soldier Summit, Salt Lake City, Echo Canyon and Ogden, UT. My presentation will reflect our time in a very frigid Utah along with some timetable excerpts and maps for the education of our members that may not be familiar with the territory. Believe me, it was my first trip to Utah as a destination and not an enroute location -- and it certainly was a learning experience!! The song was written by Mack Gordon and Harry Warren while traveling on the South- ern Railway’s “Birmingham Special” train. The song tells the story of traveling from New York City to Chattanooga by train.     75TH ANNIVERSARY 1935-2010 VOLUME 41 NUMBER 8 AUGUST 2010 THE PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD’S WAR MEMORIAL BY ED M AYOVER The Pennsylvania Railroad built one of the most magnificent edifices in the City of Philadelphia in the early years of the Great Depression: Pennsylvania Station - 30th Street. Those familiar with this structure probably take many of its elements for granted; a common occurrence in today’s harried times. For just a moment, I would like to take you back to the early 1950s when the country was returning to normalcy after World War II, but was wary of a place called “Korea” in the Far East. On August 10, 1952, General of the Army Omar Bradley (1893-1981), chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, delivered the dedication speech for a magnificent Memorial located in the main waiting room of the station. The Angel of Resurrection, as it is known, was created in 1950 by renowned sculptor Capt. Walker Kirtland Hancock (1901-1998). The statue was unveiled by Army Sergeant Robert E. Laws, a PRR Altoona Shops sheet metal worker who had won the Congressional Medal of Honor during hand-to- hand combat in the Philippines in 1945. The Angel of Resurrection During World War II, 54,035 of the PRR's 150,000 employees left to serve in the armed forces - of these, 1,307 gave their lives for their country. This large bronze statue, depicting the Archangel of Resurrection Michael lifting a fallen soldier's body out of the flames of war, rises on the east side of the main waiting area of 30th Street Station as a Memorial to those employees who perished in military service during World War II.
