Church Bells. Part 1. Rev. Robert Eaton Batty
CHURCH BELLS BY THE REV. ROBERT EATON BATTY, M.A. The Church Bell — what a variety of associations does it kindle up — how closely is it connected with the most cherished interests of mankind! And not only have we ourselves an interest in it, but it must have been equally interesting to those who were before us, and will pro- bably be so to those who are yet to come. It is the Churchman's constant companion — at its call he first enters the Church, then goes to the Daily Liturgy, to his Con- firmation, and his first Communion. Is he married? — the Church bells have greeted him with a merry peal — has he passed to his rest? — the Church bells have tolled out their final note. From a very early period there must have been some contrivance, whereby the people might know when to assemble themselves together, but some centuries must have passed before bells were invented for a religious purpose. Trumpets preceded bells. The great Day of Atonement amongst the Jews was ushered in with the sound of the trumpet; and Holy Writ has stamped a solemn and lasting character upon this instrument, when it informs us that "The Trumpet shall sound and the dead shall be raised." The Prophet Hosea was com- manded to "blow the cornet in Gibeah and the trumpet in Ramah;" and Joel was ordered to "blow the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm." The cornet and trumpet seem to be identical, as in the Septuagint both places are expressed by σαλπισατε σαλπιγγι. -
The Dhammapada: the Way of the Buddha, Vol 6
The Dhammapada: The Way of the Buddha, Vol 6 Talks given from 21/10/79 am to 30/10/79 am English Discourse series 10 Chapters Year published: 1990 The Dhammapada: The Way of the Buddha, Vol 6 Chapter #1 Chapter title: The security of insecurity 21 October 1979 am in Buddha Hall HE IS AWAKE. THE VICTORY IS HIS. HE HAS CONQUERED THE WORLD. HOW CAN HE LOSE THE WAY WHO IS BEYOND THE WAY? HIS EYE IS OPEN. HIS FOOT IS FREE. WHO CAN FOLLOW AFTER HIM? THE WORLD CANNOT RECLAIM HIM OR LEAD HIM ASTRAY, NOR CAN THE POISONED NET OF DESIRE HOLD HIM. HE IS AWAKE! THE GODS WATCH OVER HIM. HE IS AWAKE AND FINDS JOY IN THE STILLNESS OF MEDITATION AND IN THE SWEETNESS OF SURRENDER. HARD IT IS TO BE BORN, HARD IT IS TO LIVE, HARDER STILL TO HEAR OF THE WAY, AND HARD TO RISE, FOLLOW, AND AWAKE. YET THE TEACHING IS SIMPLE. DO WHAT IS RIGHT. BE PURE. AT THE END OF THE WAY IS FREEDOM. TILL THEN, PATIENCE. IF YOU WOUND OR GRIEVE ANOTHER, YOU HAVE NOT LEARNED DETACHMENT. OFFEND IN NEITHER WORD NOR DEED. EAT WITH MODERATION. LIVE IN YOUR HEART. SEEK THE HIGHEST CONSCIOUSNESS. Gautama the Buddha is talking today about the very essence of buddhahood: the height of buddhahood and the depth of it, the glory and the grace, the tremendous freedom that it brings, the light that it showers, the love, the joy, the bliss, the awakening. These sutras are rare -- rarest amongst the most rare sutras, because Buddha is opening his own heart to you. -

Digital Synthesis of Sound Generated by Tibetan Bowls and Bells
ARCHIVES OF ACOUSTICS Copyright c 2016 by PAN – IPPT Vol. 41, No. 1, pp. 139–150 (2016) DOI: 10.1515/aoa-2016-0014 Digital Synthesis of Sound Generated by Tibetan Bowls and Bells Andrzej GOŁAŚ, Roman FILIPEK Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Robotics AGH University of Science and Technology Al. A. Mickiewicza 30, 30-059 Kraków, Poland; e-mail: [email protected] (received October 24, 2011; accepted April 2, 2012) The aim of this paper is to present methods of digitally synthesising the sound generated by vibroa- coustic systems with distributed parameters. A general algorithm was developed to synthesise the sounds of selected musical instruments with an axisymmetrical shape and impact excitation, i.e., Tibetan bowls and bells. A coupled mechanical-acoustic field described by partial differential equations was discretized by using the Finite Element Method (FEM) implemented in the ANSYS package. The presented synthe- sis method is original due to the fact that the determination of the system response in the time domain to the pulse (impact) excitation is based on the numerical calculation of the convolution of the forcing function and impulse response of the system. This was calculated as an inverse Fourier transform of the system’s spectral transfer function. The synthesiser allows for obtaining a sound signal with the assumed, expected parameters by tuning the resonance frequencies which exist in the spectrum of the generated sound. This is accomplished, basing on the Design of Experiment (DOE) theory, by creating a meta-model which contains information on its response surfaces regarding the influence of the design parameters. -

Koo.Eex: the Tlingit Memorial Party
Koo.eex: The Tlingit Memorial Party Lily White, Chookaneidi and Paul White, Kaagwaantaan Approximately a year after the death of a clan member, the clan of the deceased sponsors a ceremony, which is more often referred to as a “Party” or the “Pay-off Party.” Elders and clan leaders have urged the Tlingit to refer to these events by their traditional name, the “Koo.eex,” which simply translates “To Invite,” but the underlying meaning and significance of these ceremonies is much more complex and expansive than that translation might imply. The Koo.eex is a ceremony in which the deceased member or members and ancestors of a clan are remembered. It is a time for the surviving clan members to push away their sorrow after a year of mourning, to celebrate life, to reaffirm their social and kinship bonds, and to ceremoniously present their clan at.oow (clan regalia, objects, songs and stories). It is a time to honor the members of the opposite side—sometimes referred to as moiety—who comforted the grieving clan and who assisted with the funeral as well as the burial or cremation. The Koo.eex traditionally was conducted over a several day period. It has been considerably shortened, however, because of the demands of modern life. The following schedule outlines the major components of a Koo.eex as practiced in the community of Hoonah. The authors realize that each clan and community has its own procedures and that variations occur among the different communities. The following guidelines contain the basic components of a Koo.eex, however, and it is offered for our young and for those who have expressed an interest in learning the ways of our ancestors: I. -

In the numerical simulations a number of modifications of the geometry mimicking or- naments and reliefs is investigated as such ornaments have lead to mistunes in a very popular case in Germany. It is also shown, how the influence of ornaments on the modification of eigenfrequencies can be reduced. The numerical results obtained by eigenvalue analyses as well as transient analyses with LS-DYNA compare very well with the experimental results. It is shown that LS-DYNA- Finite Element analysis can be well used for bell de- sign [14]. Introduction The casting of bells was and is still an art and the craftsmen or artists are asking for some luck to achieve the final goal of a well sounding bell. Recently in Germany the casting flaws in the mak- ing of the bells for the rebuild Frauenkirche in Dresden have been in the focus of attention.
