Two Pikes and No Nick or the Knock Knock Knock Walk with Dave Colbert

Grade. A Distance 13 miles / 21km Climbing approx 3100 ft / 950m Alas the best laid plans...After researching my intended route for this walk I came to the conclusion that, if the Army or His Lordship didn’t shoot us, we would get blown up by stray ordnance (not the OS variety by the way). Not to mention the numerous bogs and thigh deep heather. So, an alternative: still gets you two pikes, but no nick I’m afraid. If you want to use your Get Out of Jail Free card you need to go with Stella. This walk is more than Park Lane and should be titled the Knock Knock Knock Walk as we tackle Fell. Pike and Hamlet, but you can be as noisy as you like as we avoid Hush. For the quiet walk go with Chris. Starting from Dufton, we first get duffed up by (1578ft / 481m) via the said Pennine Way before heading up Threlkeld Side to High Scald Fell and an off-piste trek to Knock Fell. We then descend along the access road to Knock Pike and eventually the hamlet of Knock, returning to Dufton by way of the Church-in-the-Middle-of-Nowhere.

High Cup Nick with S tella Wadsworth . Grade B+ Distance 12 miles / 19.3km Climbing 1500ft / 457m

Leaving Dufton and heading east on the Pennine Way we make our way upwards over Dod Hill, skirt Peeping Hill and go along Narrow Gate Path to pick up the northern rim of High Cup Nick. Reaching the east end of the Nick we climb down into High Cup Gill: this is quite steep and, ¾ of the way down, we have to scramble over lots of tumbled stones. Once in the valley we follow the stream, High Cupgill Beck, west, meandering out of the valley and over down to High Cup House. From here we make our way to Brackenthwaite, Greenbank and then through the woods to the other side where we walk along the edge to Flakebridge. With any luck the three very sociable pigs who live near Flakebridge will greet us as we pass them! Re-entering the woods we make our way to the footbridge after Castle Hill settlement where we pick up field paths to reach Kemplar Bridge at Greenhow. The next and final part of our walk takes us over Redbanks Bridge and through the woods alongside the stream, passing disused quarries back to Dufton. Keep an eye open for red squirrels! Hopefully the weather will be kind to us and, if so, we will have some spectacular views to remember.

Knock ! Hush ! – a Quiet Walk with Chris Cook Grade B Distance 9 miles / 14.5kkm Climbing1500ft / 457m

Setting out from Dufton we make for Pusgill House and then pass between Brownber Hill and Dufton Pike to reach Cosca Hill. We follow the Pennine Way north-eastwards to Swinedale Beck and return, passing beneath Flagdaw and Knock Pike. Then it’s back to Cosca Hill where we rejoin the Pennine Way to head southwards back to Dufton.

“No Horsing Around ” with Alison & Lesley Grade C Distance 7 miles /11km Climbing 266ft / 80m

We begin our walk today from Appleby. Climbing slowly out of the town (166ft/50m, our longest climb of the day), we follow the road up to Stank Lane. At the end of this track we cut across the fields to Stank Wood. Passing through this small wood we cross Firth Beck and turn north over the fields into Flakebridge Wood. We walk along the edge of the wood until we join Firth Lane, a track which leads us down to the Dufton Road. Here we turn right to walk along the road until we reach a path on our left to Brampton Mill and, gradually, up into Brampton village. We have a short walk through the village before we turn southwest over the fields to Croft Ends, with lovely views across to Dufton if the weather is fine. We then proceed to Keld Farm and, after a small climb, we descend to the Roman Road where we bear left and continue until we reach a roundabout. From here we walk under the railway bridge and make a sharp right turn onto the B6542. We take a path on our left towards the river then, when almost there, we turn left onto the school playing fields and follow the path round to the riverside and into Appleby. There are several wooden stiles on this walk. After the initial climb out of Appleby it is a relatively easy walk.
