An Open Letter to Manitoba's Next Government Dear September 4, 2019 Re: An Open Letter to Manitoba’s Next Government Dear: The Honourable Brian Pallister, Premier; Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba Mr. Wab Kinew, Leader of the Opposition; Leader of the Manitoba New Democratic Party Mr. Dougald Lamont, Leader of the Manitoba Liberal Party Mr. James Beddome, Leader of the Green Party of Manitoba We, the undersigned business leaders, are concerned by the growing risks that climate change and the resulting environmental degradation and uncertainty pose to our economic well-being. Accelerated and unprecedented climate change is happening and is a mainstream issue of concern for businesses all over the world. It presents a growing risk to our companies and we already see it affecting multiple sectors. Failure to plan, act, and adapt will impose greater financial costs on businesses and taxpayers. We represent a cross section of Manitoba businesses; we employ Manitobans, invest our capital here, create jobs, and contribute directly to the growth and well-being of this province. While we are confident in our ability to do what is right for our business and the people we support, we cannot do it alone. We request your consideration of the following actions as you plan Manitoba’s future: − Remove policies and barriers that discourage or prevent growth of the local clean technology sector. − Ensure continued access to reliable, affordable, renewable energy. − Invest in resilient infrastructure to protect critical supply lines and reduce the financial burden of future extreme weather. − Put measures in place to help us protect our assets and employees from the impacts of environmental degradation and a changing climate, thereby ensuring continued productivity. − Support Manitoba businesses and consumers in making purchasing choices that result in lower fossil fuel consumption and a lower carbon footprint. − Institute policies that protect Manitoba’s natural spaces and key waterbodies so that the responsible businesses that rely on them can thrive, and so that all Manitobans can enjoy them. − Promote responsible development and use of Manitoba’s natural resources. − Position Manitoba and its industries as national and global leaders in clean technology development and the circular economy revolution, such that new economic opportunities may be fully realized. This letter is not an endorsement of any one political party or any current or past policy. It is a request that, should your party form the next government, your policies and actions demonstrate a clear and strong commitment to supporting Manitoba businesses to thrive, now and long into the future. The number of children walking and biking to school in Manitoba has been declining for decades due to what experts in engineering, planning and health promotion agree are mostly traffic­related issues. This exacerbates the incidence of chronic diseases linked to physical inactivity such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer and mental illness, threatens the very sustainability of our healthcare system and has serious impacts on individual lives. Knowing that School Travel Planning and school­travel focused infrastructure is helping to reverse this trend right here in Winnipeg and that it’s effect is limited only by the amount of time, effort and funding currently being invested. Will your party commit to an ambitious province­wide strategy tasked with adopting policies, design standards, and roadway improvements that will make it safer and easier for more children to walk or bike to school? Response: The GPM is committed to introducing a $50/tonne carbon tax to finance a range of ​ measures that will reduce dependency on fossil fuels. The tax will raise $500 million per year of which $166 million will be dedicated to helping Manitobans reduce their use of fossil fuels. Funding active transportation infrastructure and programs designed to encourage people to walk or bike more is a key element of that Green Infrastructure Fund. QUESTION 2. People of all ages and abilities across Manitoba would like to walk or bike more often, but that aim is frustrated far too often the lack of bicycle infrastructure or, especially for young people, by heavy traffic and scary crossings.

    Manitoba parties and candidates respond to Lake Winnipeg questions News LWF April 6, 2016 0 Fresh water matters to us, and we know it matters to our members and supporters. In the lead-up to Manitoba’s election, we wanted to learn more about how parties and candidates plan to address the challenges facing Lake Winnipeg. We sent the following five questions to each party’s headquarters. We also reached out to all Manitoba candidates with an accessible email address. Question 1 Whole-lake studies on Lake 227 at Canada’s Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) over multiple decades demonstrate that phosphorus controls the growth of blue-green algae blooms. This research has driven important policy changes that have greatly improved Great Lakes water quality. This same research points to the need to maximize phosphorus removal from the City of Winnipeg’s sewage. Manitoba’s Clean Environment Commission, the Province of Manitoba, the City of Winnipeg, and freshwater scientists from around the world agree that removal of phosphorus from Winnipeg treatment plant effluent is imperative to reduce algae growth on Lake Winnipeg. However, action to achieve this has been stalled for over a decade. In December 2015, Winnipeg’s North End plant released effluent with almost four and a half times the recommended phosphorus. How will you and your party resolve the longstanding stalemate that continues to prevent action to remove phosphorus from Winnipeg’s wastewater? How will you ensure immediate action is taken ensure phosphorus in Winnipeg’s effluent does not exceed 1 milligram/litre? Question 2 The eutrophication of Lake Winnipeg is a significant environmental threat caused by human activities occurring across a watershed that is 40 times larger than the lake itself.
