"From renewals of fan and critic favorites Love, Victor and Taste the Nation, to exploring the true story of The Girl From Plainville and learning about David Chang's deeply personal view at what's next for the restaurant industry in The Next Thing You Eat, Hulu's slate of original programming has never been stronger," said Craig Erwich, SVP of originals, Hulu, in a statement. "Our content is driven by highly curated programming from best-in-class talent, and Hulu is dedicated to continuing to tell unique and inspired stories that our viewers crave." Meanwhile, the streamer canceled critical fave High Fidelity, starring and executive produced by Zoe Kravitz, after one season. • Pre-Upfront Thoughts on Broadcast TV, Promotions, Nielsen, and AVOD by Steve Sternberg
April 2021 #105 ________________________________________________________________________________________ _______ Pre-Upfront Thoughts on Broadcast TV, Promotions, Nielsen, and AVOD By Steve Sternberg Last year’s upfront season was different from any I’ve been involved in during my 40 years in the business. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, there were no live network presentations to the industry, and for the first time since I’ve been evaluating television programming, I did not watch any of the fall pilots before the shows aired. Many new and returning series experienced production delays, resulting in staggered premieres, shortened seasons, and unexpected cancellations. The big San Diego and New York comic-cons were canceled. There was virtually no pre-season buzz for new broadcast or cable series. Stuck at home with fewer new episodes of scripted series than ever to watch on ad-supported TV, people turned to streaming services in large numbers. Netflix, which had plenty of shows in the pipeline, surged in terms of both viewers and new subscribers. Disney+, boosted by season 2 of The Mandalorian and new Marvel series, WandaVision and Falcon and the Winter Soldier, was able to experience tremendous growth. A Sternberg Report Sponsored Message The Sternberg Report ©2021 ________________________________________________________________________________________ _______ Amazon Prime Video, and Hulu also managed to substantially grow their subscriber bases. Warner Bros. announcing it would release all of its movies in 2021 simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max (led by Wonder Woman 1984 and Godzilla vs. Kong), helped add subscribers to that streaming platform as well – as did its successful original series, The Flight Attendant. CBS All Access, rebranded as Paramount+, also enjoyed growth.

  • OTT Streaming Video Playbook for Advanced Marketers
OTT Streaming Video Playbook for Advanced Marketers December 2019 Part of the Direct Brands Playbook Series sponsored by: Direct Brands Initiative Strategic Partners: This report was produced by IAB. The final report, findings, and recommendations were not influenced by strategic partners. OTT STREAMING VIDEO PLAYBOOK FOR ADVANCED MARKETERS As it turns out, the revolution will be televised over the internet. It’s called OTT streaming video and it is now a mainstream consumer medium. “Over-the-Top” (OTT) streaming video—which is video streamed to a TV that is connected to the internet—has shifted the traditional TV landscape, bringing the interactivity, data and targeting associated with digital media, to the television ecosystem. It has also opened a vast and expanding universe of choice in content and pricing models for consumers who can choose from a continually growing landscape of services, with professionally produced long-form, short-form and user-generated content. Brands are catching on fast. For the first time, the high-impact, brand storytelling power of the big screen television has been seamlessly integrated with the targeting, analytics and interactivity of digital media. Moreover, OTT streaming video presents an opportunity to speak to an audience that is increasingly difficult to reach through traditional media channels. We’re now seeing stats that show that non-pay TV households are projected to almost reach parity with pay TV households in the next five years1 and many of those non- pay TV households are streaming video. Given this shift in viewership, OTT streaming video represents a largely incremental audience and a way for brands to “reach the unreachables” and engage directly with their target consumers.
