The Area The village of is in the county of Norfolk, although interestingly lies virtually on the border of 3 counties: Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire! The name Tilney is thought to derive from the Old English for Tilla’s Island and St Lawrence refers to the dedication of the village parish church. Its most famous son is one John Aylmer born in 1521, the private tutor to Lady Jane Grey. He was to rise in import by becoming the Bishop of for 17yrs, is buried in St. Paul’s Cathedral, London but sadly he was not too popular!
