Last year, Raphael has celebrated its 20th anniversary. I would like to express my gratitude to every member Raphael Clinic of the Raphael family and our sponsors, who have been passionately devoted to Raphael’s growth. Raphael Clinic, which provides free medical treatment to immigrant workers, has made continuous progress in quality of medical services. In 2017 alone, Raphael Clinic was able to treat 17 thousand patients. On Sundays, Raphael Center in Seongbuk-dong offers free medical care in 18 clinical departments, while opening its dental clinic on Wednesdays and Saturdays. A special clinic that deals with patients’ chronic diseases is also being operated. At our Dongducheon branch, which is mainly focused on treating African laborers, we are attempting different approaches to clinical departments, such as running a mobile clinic and an Oriental Medicine clinic. Around 1,300 patients, who required medical examinations and operations that Raphael could not perform firsthand, were able to be treated and regain their health at our affiliated hospitals.

Support for Daejeon Mobile Clinic and Mokpo Free Clinic Center for local multicultural families and immigrant workers has been continued until the local community was capable of independent operation. There are additional needs from areas like Pocheon, Jincheon, and Busan, so we look forward to future improvements.

Raphael Clinic will further expand permanent medical centers and ceaselessly work to provide medical support to our own brothers and sisters in North .

Starting from Mongolia ten years ago, Raphael International has pursued international activities in Myanmar, Raphael Nepal, and Philippines. International In Mongolia, Raphael International is providing on-site seminars on endocrinology, rehabilitation medicine, and nephrology. The project on organ transplantation has been implemented for the past 4 years, and we are in the process of building an organ transplantation model. The CPD (Continuing Professional Development) Project has established an independent and sustainable system in which the best medical professionals in Mongolia educate medical staff from primary and secondary hospitals. Furthermore, the Mongolian medical staff, who attended Raphael’s fellowship program, have organized volunteer groups to provide medical services to low- income families in their local area and are carrying on Raphael’s philanthropic efforts.

Based on the successful self-reliant model we have seen in Mongolia, Raphael International has started supporting Myanmar from 2015. In Myanmar, our assistance is mainly focused on organ transplantation, fellowship program, on-site joint surgeries and educational seminars. Our Smart Mobile Clinic project and cervical cancer screening project for women in Bago Region are also ongoing actively.

In Nepal, Raphael International is operating medical camps, constructing chimneys to prevent respiratory diseases, and assisting pediatric heart disease surgery. Lastly, in the Philippines, we provide free clinics and health education for teenagers and local residents.

Raphael Nanum Foundation was established to reinforce the active and sustainable support of our domestic and Raphael Nanum international operations. This year, the foundation has supported Raphael’s domestic and international projects Foundation such as Myanmar’s organ transplantation capacity building project. Moreover, we are in the process of planning and coming up with various programs for Raphael Center, which would allow the latter to become a place where volunteers can respect human life and become a companion of love and sharing.

We would like to thank our volunteers and supporters for their warm hearted support for Raphael. We will do our utmost to continue our medical services and reach out to those in need.

We ask for your everlasting love and support. Thank you.

Dear beloved members of the Raphael Family,

Congratulatory In celebration of the 20th Anniversary of Raphael Clinic, I would like to express my sincere Message gratitude to Raphael for continuously supporting immigrant workers in Korea and people around the world with medical needs. I believe that only thanks to the immeasurable love you have shown were we able to build this mature society where people from different backgrounds can coexist harmoniously.

South Korea made great strides over the decades, evolving from a developing country into a donor country. I am very proud of Raphael for taking on the responsibility to return the help we have received in our past back to our suffering neighbors abroad.

Currently, there are about 2 million foreigners living in Korea. Although the United Nations designated the ‘International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination’ 50 years ago, discrimination towards immigrant workers in Korea is still rampant. Raphael Clinic has worked hard, even on holidays, to become a family for immigrant laborers who are working day and night for their own families at home and for Korea’s economy.

All of us, including our fellow immigrant workers, are precious, worthy human beings. We were all created by God and are loved by Him. Even if immigrant workers are not treated well here, they are still someone’s precious son, daughter, father, or mother. Everyone needs to rely on God in order to maintain their cherished individual selves within the paths of life each of us are walking. Believing in God will give us power to preserve what is precious to us.

Once again, I am very thankful to every member of the medical staff and volunteer of Raphael who is there for holy sharing. I hope that Raphael will constantly lend a warm hand to those around the world who are alienated, by sharing medical assistance. I pray for Raphael in celebration of their 20th anniversary to move towards new horizons.

On the Immigrant’s Day, May 1st 2017, Cardinal Andrew Soo-jung Yeom

6 2017 Raphael Annual Report

“I am very thankful to those who have been working for Raphael since its humble beginnings. Raphael has turned a spotlight to the human rights of immigrant workers, which were barely mentioned in our society 20 years ago. These days, Raphael’s projects are expanded not only in Korea, but also in developing countries through the provision of medical support. Without any obligations to help or financial support, people at Raphael devoted themselves for 20 years to a cause they thought was worthwhile and valuable. Their devotion touched everyone and eventually worked miracles. I congratulate all of Raphael’s members who have been working fiercely together. As a disciple of Jesus, I hope this work of helping and sharing love towards our less fortunate neighbors will continue for a long time.” Bishop Peter Woo Il Kang (Archdiocese of Jeju)

“You are the heroes and heroines of the miracle of Raphael’s 20th anniversary. I would like to extend my gratitude towards those who have worked so hard for Raphael, and may God be with you. As the angel Raphael saved Tobias in the Bible, both volunteers and patients have seen a miracle in Raphael. Patients who had suffered from illness received help from Raphael, and found hope within their lives. Is there a bigger miracle than this? If someone has to suffer from both language and economic difficulties in a foreign land, the pain will get extremely severe. For the past 20 years, Raphael has shined a light to the people who were in the darkness. If there was no one who led this project, and if nobody had shared their precious time and talent, Raphael would not be what it is today. I wish the next 20, 30 years will continue to be an opportunity to understand and share love with immigrant workers.” Bishop Timothy Kyung Chon Yu (Archdiocese of Seoul)

“I do not feel I am entitled to commend and congratulate on Raphael volunteers achievement because I fall short of doing hard works like many of you. Instead, I want to remember each person who preciously devoted him- or herself to Raphael’s development. Dear Raphael Family! You are Raphael, and remember, your hard work has resulted in Raphael’s precious growth, and in the love of many people around us. Raphael will never lose its vitality and give the world beautiful fragrance. With everyone’s full heart, I hope Raphael will remain Raphael, today and tomorrow.” Father Luke Suk Hoon Huh (Priest of Raphael)

“20 years means a time that people to become adults since their birth. Raphael’s growth in that time is the result of numerous volunteers and sponsor’s love among neighbors. We will have to keep treating, curing and sharing regardless of religion or race, as Cardinal Soo Hwan Kim has impressed in our minds. Once again, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to those who have supported us and showed us love, and to God, who has been protecting Raphael for a long time.” Professor Yoo Young Kim (Former Chairman of Raphael Nanum Foundation)

Chang Duk Kim, Representative Director of Raphael Clinic Interview by Editor Joo Yeon Lee

Early 2000s. One day, Professor Jun Kim and Professor Curie Ahn supported Raphael whenever there was a patient in need of surgery. came to visit. They wanted to ask for support for Raphael’s Internal Following his father, Professor Kim has always devoted to help the Medicine Department. Back then, there were many small and big others. His mother Eon Nam Oh (Aurellia) taught him the value of new clinics for immigrant workers in Korea, and many of them sent living together by encouraging her children to ‘always share with other patients beyond their competence to Raphael Clinic. In such situation, people.’ It was obvious for Professor Kim to join Raphael. the number of medical treatments skyrocketed, and more hands were needed for the patients. Professor Chang Duk Kim sympathized with These days, Professor Kim does not only take care of treatments, but the situation and joined Raphael with Professor Joong Sik Eom and also works as the representative director of Raphael Clinic. He mainly Korean University Medical Team. Professor Kim said, ‘I happened to be focuses on managing and helping doctors, nurses and pharmacists do involved Raphael’, but maybe, him joining Raphael was an inevitable their jobs smoothly without any inconvenience. He expressed that part of destiny. “the meaning of ‘volunteering’ for me changed as my involvement in Raphael got deeper.” Professor Kim’s father is Dr. Namho Kim (Thomas), a figure well known for his thrifty lifestyle and selfless sharing towards the poor. He left a “Before, I used to think of volunteering as a pastime to do when there will to donate his properties to the church for the underprivileged, and was time available and I “felt like it.” However, now, it has become as a result Kim Namho Foundation was established. Professor Kim had essential for me. Sometimes I would worry others would think I was already been connected to Raphael through the foundation. Since Professor Kim had participated in medical volunteering when he attended medical school, volunteering was not new to him. But still, spending time and sharing with those in need makes him realize the importance of volunteering and sense of duty as a doctor. The most memorable parts of volunteering were the medical camps for poor children in Cebu, Philippines with medical staff and medical students from Korea University. Since five years ago, during summer vacation, he has been participating in medical camps and health education for 6,000 students from The Sisters of Mary Boy’s Town and Girl’s Town in Talisay.

“The Sisters of Mary is providing education and shelter to children from underprivileged families. When we visit there, the students welcome us with bright eyes and thank us with their whole heart after even the simplest medical treatments. The medical staff feels rewarded by that. We are all very touched by their sincere greetings and innocence. Especially for the medical students, I believe that this is a great opportunity for them to envision how they would like to live their lives as doctors in the future.”

He also told a story of a pregnant woman from Philippines who visited Raphael but was sent to a secondary hospital due to her critical condition. He remembers gathering help so she could leave the hospital healthily without worrying about the cost. “The fact that we could help them makes me feel rewarded.”

Professor Kim said that Raphael could become the center where doctors can continually help people in need because of the quality treatment and medical camps and educations in foreign countries by very professional doctors many of whom happen to be faculty members at medical school. Also, Raphael’s affiliated hospitals provide subsequent treatments, which make him be proud of Raphael’s system. He stated, “Through this process, we could come up with a medical service of high-quality. It is also very meaningful that medical students can experience interacting with real patients while they are volunteering.”

“Raphael is becoming a role-model suggesting volunteer education and system including medical service. Even Seongbuk District is keeping its eyes on us. We might be able to support and set directions for other regions as well. I believe that we need to keep this in mind as we plan Raphael’s future.”

Professor Kim suggested a ‘Senior Academy’ where senior medical staff could share their knowledge and use their abilities. However, to do that, there needs to be more financial aid. Specifically, he emphasized on financial support for projects overseas. “There is a lot of work to do in business and education. Lots of human and financial resources are needed. I guess we should collect our thoughts to create well-organized funds.”

He always keeps his teacher’s advice to ‘treat the patients as if they were your family members’ in mind. “Just like most of the doctors, I feel most satisfied when my patients are fully recovered.”, he said. For him, Raphael has become a ‘family’ from which he could never be separated. “Until the end, until I can help, I would like to work together with Raphael.”

23 This year is the 20th anniversary of Raphael Clinic, which has been sharing God’s love by providing free clinics to the poor and I feel isolated immigrant workers. Also, it is the 10th anniversary of Raphael International, which has extended this sharing of love joyful and internationally, allowing Raphael to save the lives of people living in deprived areas. In celebration, our Chief Editor Byung blessed by Il Jang met Professor Woong Han Kim (Benedict, 55, Seoul Yeouidodong Catholic Church) of SNU Children’s Hospital Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Department, an active Raphael God when volunteer working in countries such as Mongolia and Nepal. volunteering

Woong Han Kim. Raphael International Executive Director Extract from ‘People Catholic Times met’ May 24th 2017

Chief Editor Jang: You’ve worked at Seoul National University Hospital Public Health Medical Service and Catholic Student’s Association for a long time, and you are continuing to share by working at Raphael Clinic and Raphael International. What made you do this?

Professor Kim: Actually, I knew Raphael Clinic from its beginnings, but I hesitated to join due to my busy schedule. I took part in Raphael Clinic when I operated a Mongolian child suffering from cardiac disease. The child had a heart condition, so terrible that he was not even able to get on the plane to Korea at first. I prayed a lot before the operation. “If this surgery goes on well, I will take that as the God’s will and join in Raphael Clinic.” The operation was successful, and the child recovered well. From that time, I have been working hard volunteering at Raphael Clinic.

Chief Editor Jang: What was the most memorable experience volunteering at Raphael?

Professor Kim: Once, I operated a two-month-old infant from Mongolia. The surgery was very risky. After the operation, the baby had a cardiac arrest three times. Each time, we did CPR, and when the heart started to beat, the baby smiled. After the third resuscitation, the baby opened the eyes and smiled. This had never happened in any of the 5,000 surgeries I’ve performed. At that time, I could feel that God was near us. The baby is very healthy now.

Chief Editor Jang: You are top notch in the field of Pediatric Heart Surgery, and you are building sustainable models through improvement of local medical staff competencies rather than having them surgeries in Korea. I know that you’ve volunteered mainly in Mongolia, so could you explain to us the significance of the activities performed there?

Professor Kim: What we do at Raphael is beyond explanation. We find Chief Editor Jang: I cannot imagine the agony of immigrant workers it hard to gather people and money when we volunteer. Whenever who are living far from their homes. Can you tell us about your we go to other countries for surgeries, we need to take a week off domestic activities? from our work here. It is very hard for medical staff to get a week off. We always think of it as the last chance to operate a medical camp Professor Kim: I took on new responsibilities when Raphael Clinic outside of Korea, but thankfully, opportunities and financial support opened Dongducheon Center in 2007 with Konkuk University’s medical keep coming in. While volunteering, I learn more and feel great as students. Immigrants work at furniture or leather factories where the a healthcare provider. Also, there are many good people working environment is terrible and days-off are not guaranteed. So, it is hard together. Immigrant workers work in the so Considering the situation there, I was not sure if my service would be called ‘3D Jobs’ - dirty, difficult, and dangerous. Even though they helpful or if I was suited to be a doctor. However, God gave me the work hard, they are harshly discriminated. I once met a Nepalese man talent of cardiac surgery. I would like for this gift to serve in doing who used to work in Korea. He told me that he realized the existence God’s work while I have the ability to. There is no big plan. I just wish of a formal speech level and honorifics only after his return to Nepal, to do my best as a surgeon for as long as I can. When I pray before suggesting that Korean people used to talk down on him and swear the operation, it allows me to feel God is always with us and this gives at him. me strength. Chief Editor Jang: What would be the church’s role dealing with this kind of discrimination?

“For many years, every time I finish projects, I feel relieved to say ‘it is all over now.’ At the same time, I am left with a slight sense of frustration stemming from the unfortunate reality that Korea’s development assistance fall short. The biggest success we gained from this project is the improvement of hospitals’ capacities in three regions and the coaching of 85 trainers and 83 facilitators over the duration of this 4-year-project. They will constantly contribute to building capacities of medical staff and hospitals in Mongolia. This project was essential to Mongolia, but the medical staff there was not familiar with it. Yet, the trainers and facilitators trusted us and actively participated in the program. Specifically, we made them participate in every process including planning, development and evaluation of the program. We could see them enjoying the possibility of active and liberal participation, after having lived their lives under a socialist hierarchical structure. I am convinced Mongolians will remember this project as a democratic experience.” Professor Jwa Seop Shin (SNU Hospital Medical Education Department)

39 Concert without Borders

Raphael Publicity Ambassador Hareem Interview by Raphael Editorial Committee

Q. This is the first anniversary of ‘Concert without Borders’. What made you participate in this project?

A. I used to have a stiff shoulder. I did not take it seriously, thinking it was the result of a lifetime of playing musical instruments. But one day, the pain got severe. It happened while I was in my trip to Cuba. Since it is hard to go to local hospitals as a foreigner, I tried to endure the pain. But as the pain got worse, I was worried and finally went to emergency room in Cuba. Thankfully, the doctors were kind and I got better. On that night though, Raphael Clinic came across my mind.

A few years ago, I sang in a high school hallway and met busy vol- unteers and foreigners who were sick but seemed happy to gather together. I felt that ‘Raphael is doing what is really needed.’ So, as soon as I came back to Korea, I visited Raphael again.

Q. ‘Concert without Borders’ must be very different from other con- certs that you had planned in the past.

A. I believe that the goal for holding a concert is not about being visu- ally shown, but it is how the people get assimilated to the music. We can say it is the emotional cure from immersion or feeling of relief from familiarity.

The thing is, people gathering at Raphael share different languages and cultures. The space is also very limited because the center is built for medical treatment. So, I was thinking of a different ap- proach. I thought we should focus on the patients, not the music itself. ‘Let them have opportunities to sing in their languages, get along with them and give them a big hand and present. Let them think that they were good and precious by themselves. Let them heal themselves.’ This was the very clear goal that I had from the beginning.

As the planner, I did sometimes get a little too ambitious. However, it is hard to sustain for a long time if your objective becomes unclear. I try to think as simple as I can, alerting myself for expanding this project over our capability.

Q. Is there a concert that was especially memorable to you?

A. Of course, yes. Every time was like a scene from a movie. Once Ahmad from South Africa said ‘this song is for you’ and danced while he was leaving a video message to his daughter back home. He danced delightfully, yet his face was sad and seri- ous. I could feel that he was thinking of his daughter while dancing. Also, Sapunam, who had a beautiful smile, cried talking about his family. But suddenly, he joyfully danced a Nepalese traditional dance, which was very memorable for me.

I was very surprised by how good they were at it. Of course I never have stereotypes on cultures when it comes to music, but patients in Raphael went far beyond my expectations. They never stopped in the middle of a song even if they didn’t know the whole song. Considering how we Koreans tend to hesitate every time, they are much better.

Q. I was impressed by how you send a video message at Hareem @MYSTIC89 the end of every concert. Having made his debut with the band ‘Ven’ in 1996, A. I started it to bring out what is inside my mind. The way of leaving a video mes- ing in a concert to raise funds for the construction of sage was unfamiliar to me, either. But still, I wanted Raphael Center. 41 Q. You are also sending guitars to Africa. Can you tell us the reason Q. What would you like to achieve through ‘Concert without Borders?’ why you are interested in social philanthropic activities? A. I am thinking of giving a more practical gift to the patients. My A. Listening to folk music from other countries, I really wanted to learn long time goal is to continue holding ‘Concert without Borders’ and them. Therefore, we can divide the roles effectively and can prepare the concert in short time with few people.
