Geologic factors that control landslide deposits and mineralization in the east part of the Lower Crooked Basin are discussed. This field trip is 152.7 km (94.9 mi). INTRODUCTION 124o 121o 118o KBML The Wildcat Mountain caldera, in the eastern part of the Lower Portland Crooked Basin, is a volcanic vent complex that collapsed and DCP filled with more than 90 km3 (21.5 mi3) of rhyolitic ash-flow BM 45o WV tuff during the middle Eocene. The Wildcat Mountain caldera is part of a broad sweep of voluminous ash-flow tuff magmatism, between ca. 41 and 25 Ma, preserved in volcanic and intrusive rocks distributed Mutton 3. The Ochoco River caldera volcanic field is underlain by variably deformed Cretaceous and PRFZ older (?) sedimentary rocks exposed between Ochoco Divide SFZ Crooked River and Mitchell. It is flanked on the west, north, and east by Eocene Powell to Oligocene depocenters that are exposed in an arcuate belt Buttes between Gray Butte, Clarno, and the Painted Hills. The depocen- 44.0o ters preserve a regionally segmented and stratigraphically dis- continuous volcanic and sedimentary succession of the Clarno and John Day Formations (Walker, 1990; Robinson and others, Horse BFZ 1990; Smith and others, 1998; Retallack and others, 2000; Best- Butte Deschutes River land and others, 1999). The Wildcat Mountain caldera ping the Ochoco volcanic field (Figure 3). is coincident with a relatively stable tectonic area near the junction of the northwest trending Brothers fault zone (BFZ) and the north- northwest trending Sisters fault zone (SFZ). The northern edge of this Regional Paleogene stratigraphy area is coincident with the Klamath-Blue Mountain gravity-anomaly lineament (KBML) (Riddihough and others, 1986). Beschta1, College of Forestry, Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon 97330 Recent History (1988-2004) of Beaver Dams along Bridge Creek in Central Oregon Abstract Bridge Creek is a low-gradient stream in the John Day River basin of eastern Oregon. After decades of grazing, riparian vegetation along a 31.7 km reach was sparse and low in diversity, vegetated floodplains were typically narrow, and the stream was relatively wide and shallow. Cattle grazing within this reach was reduced in 1988, irrigation diversion ditches were replaced with culverts in 1989, and beaver (Castor canadensis) trapping was discontinued after 1991. Between 1988 and 2004, we inventoried beaver dams and ponds twice a year and estimated their dimensions. Field notes and photographs were used to document habitat use and better understand the potential role of beaver with regard to channel morphology and riparian plant communities. The an- nual number of beaver dams present in the study reach ranged from 9 to 103. On average, dams were nearly 8 m in length with ponds extending upstream 26 m. We also found that beaver dams/ponds, over time, typically accumulated sediment, improved conditions for establishment and growth of riparian plants, and altered channels. Dams that breached during periods of high flow often contributed to long-term increases in channel complexity through the formation of new meanders, pools, and riffles. Exposed sediment deposits associated with breached dams provided fresh seedbeds for regeneration of willows (Salix spp.), black cottonwood (Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa), and other riparian plants.

Marble, and Jack Henderson Mississippi Office of Geology INTRODUCTION One of the most interesting geologic features ofMississippi is the Jackson Volcano, which rests only 2900 feet beneath the state's capital city. The volcano's dense core forms one ofthe most prominent structural anomalies found on gravity and magnetic surveys of the state, showing tightly wrapped con­ tours of increasing gravity and magnetic deflection like a crowded bull's- eye (Figure l ). This igneous complex and the up Iifted formations around it comprise a structure known as the Jackson Dome. Northwest ofthe Jackson Volcano in southern Humphreys County is the Midnight Volcano and the associ­ ated volcanic terrain ofthe Sharkey Platform . Dense igneous rock below Jackson and Midnight increase the force ofgravity slightly as shown in Figure I. A person tipping the scales at Jackson or Midnight would be slightly heavier than elsewhere in the state (if anyone would like to use that for an excuse). No other capital city or major population center is situated above an extinct volcano, even though the recent movie "Volcano" fictitiously placed Los Angeles, California, above one. Monroe, Louisiana, is Jackson 's sister city in being a close second, as it rests above a volcanic terrain known as the Monroe Uplift. However, the position ofJackson's downtown district above the throat of an extinct Cretaceous volcano seems to be unique. Ifthe Jackson Volcano were to ever vent itself in the future, the Coliseum would be near ground zero.
