2016-17 SHARKS TEAM NOTES: LOOKING TO PROTECT THIS HOUSE…Last season, the Sharks finished with a home record of 18-20-3, which ranked 23rd in the league. So far, the Sharks have gone 4-0-0 on home ice, T-5th in the league, and achieved their first three-win homestand since going 3-3-0 from March 22-28. The last time San Jose finished 3-0 (or better) on a homestand was from Dec. 9-20, 2014 (5-0-0).

SHOTS, SHOTS, SHOTS…The Sharks enter play tonight second in the NHL in shots allowed per game (25.2 per contest), and have allowed 30 or more shots just once this season. In addition, the Sharks rank 5th in the league in shots taken per game (31.3).

FOCUS ON THE KILL…After surrendering a power-play goal against in each of the first three games (50.0% PK), San Jose has killed off 19 of its last 20 power plays against (95.0%). The Sharks entered play on Oct. 18 ranked T-29th in penalty killing and currently rank 12th (84.0%) in that department. The Sharks killed off all three of Columbus’ top-ranked power play in Thursday’s 3-1 win and only took one penalty (2 PIM’s) in Saturday’s 4-1 win over Nashville.

BRENT BURNS-ING UP…On Feb. 29, 2016 versus the , Brent Burns scored a goal and two assists to go along with a plus-3 rating. Since that day, the Barrie native has been burning up the score sheets.

From that game against Montreal until the end of the 2015-16 regular season, the San Jose defenseman registered seven goals and 17 assists with by a plus-5 rating in 21 games. During the 2016 Stanley Cup playoffs, Brent tallied another seven goals and 17 assists with by a plus-11 rating.

In his first nine games of the 2016-17 season, Burns has produced three goals, seven assists and a plus-2 rating.

Altogether, “Burnzie” has scored 17 goals, 41 assists, and a plus-18 rating in his last 54 games.

HOPING FOR SIMILAR RETURNS…The Sharks embark on their 2016-17 schedule coming off of the team’s first Stanley Cup Final appearance in franchise history last season.

The Sharks Opening Night roster featured 17 players that appeared in the 2016 Stanley Cup Final for Team Teal and a few new faces as well.

The Sharks added several players via free agency this offseason, including forward Mikkel Boedker and defenseman David Schlemko.
