FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SEPTEMBER 28, 2010 RIVER ROCK CASINO RESORT PRESENTS PARTY 2011 WITH HUEY LEWIS AND THE NEWS FRIDAY, DECEMBER 31 Richmond, BC – It's been almost thirty years since Huey Lewis and The News graduated from Bay Area bars to the top of the Billboard charts with their rollicking brand of soulful rock 'n' roll. Formed in 1979 and originally called Huey Lewis and The American Express, the band released their self-titled debut album in 1980 followed two years later by Picture This which spawned the Top Ten hit, "Do You Believe in Love." In 1983, they released Sports which hit #1 on the Album chart and featured “I Want a New Drug,” “The Heart of Rock “N Roll” and “If This Is It.” Their first #1 single, "The Power of Love" appeared on the Back to the Future soundtrack in 1985. Their second #1 album, Fore! was released the following year and produced the hit singles, “Stuck with You,” “Hip to Be Square” and “Jacob’s Ladder.” They went on to release several albums through the 90’s. In 2005, the band celebrated their 25th anniversary with Live at 25 … a CD & DVD set that was recorded in Chico, California. They went on to record the theme song for Seth Rogen’s 2008 film, Pineapple Express. This November, they'll be releasing their new album, Soulsville. Recorded at historic Ardent Studios in Memphis, the album features fourteen classic songs from the vault of Stax Records including “Respect Yourself” and “Got To Get You Off My Mind.” Lewis has also enjoyed success as an actor on both screen and stage having starred in the feature film, Duets and in the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, Chicago. -

Embracing Ambiguity in the Analysis of Form in Pop/Rock Music, 1982–1991 Trevor de Clercq KEYWORDS: Form, popular music, rock music, verse, chorus, bridge ABSTRACT: A central concern for theories of form in pop/rock music is the division of a song into sections and, consequently, the categorization of these sections according to a standard set of section labels. Psychological research on categorization shows that it is inherently a perceptual process, one that involves graded membership and fuzzy boundaries. Thus in contrast to prior theorists, who often a2empt to minimi/e ambiguity in the analysis of form in pop/rock music, I confront ambiguity directly, organi/ing and describing many of the common types encountered. I focus e4clusively on the time period 198 –1991, 1hen verse5chorus form can be considered to have achieved 1idespread currency. After providing an illustrative e4emplar, I discuss three types of ambiguity common to this decade, each based on the main section role involved: 16 verse ambiguity, 1hich typically derives from 1eak section di7erentiation8 6 chorus ambiguity, 1hich usually involves a blend of more than one section role8 and 36 bridge ambiguity, 1hich often results from di7erent hierarchical meanings of the bridge label. Huey Lewis and The News has sold more than 20 million albums and was a Grammy winner and Academy Award nominee for “The Power of Love,” a song written for the film, Back to the Future. The group also won a Best Music Video Grammy for "Heart of Rock & Roll" and then a collaborative Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for "We Are The World". A few of Huey Lewis and the News’ top ten singles include "Do You Believe In Love", "Heart And Soul", "I Want A New Drug", "The Heart of Rock & Roll", "If This Is It", "Hip To Be Square", "I Know What I Like", "Doing It All For My Baby" and "Perfect World". The band will perform on August 9th at 7:30 pm in the Chris Beck Arena. This concert marks the band’s first appearance at the Sonoma County Fair since 1982. Student ID: 150227911 Character: Patrick Bateman Character Backstory: Patrick Bateman is the main ‘protagonist’ of ‘American Psycho’. He is a greatly successful but also extremely narcissistic and neurotic 27-year-old executive Wall Street financer. Patrick is a former protégée of Ivy-League schools having studied at both Harvard and the Harvard Business School. As an enjoyer of the upper-class life and its luxurious materialist mediums, Patrick can be often seen wearing Brooks Brothers suits and dining at exclusive and high in demand restaurants such as Pastels, Arcadia but not Dorsia (one of the few restaurants Patrick can’t seem to get a reservation at). While at his workplace Patrick’s narcissism drives him to excel and beat all competition at the simplest most mundane tasks and comparisons such as music taste and business card comparison. In his more private life, Patrick is engaged to Evelyn Richards, both display a loving and truthful romance to friends and family but cheat on each other behind closed doors. Character Personality: Patrick’s personality is best described by Patrick himself in the novel the film was based off “my personality is sketchy and unformed, my heartlessness goes deep and is persistent. My conscience, my pity, my hopes disappeared a long time ago (Ellis, 406). Throughout the film Patrick presents himself as being smooth, calm and collected, his before mentioned narcissism remains invisible as he always surrounded by like-minded peers of the yuppie generation who all talk and behave like him. This leaves his unconscious desires and plans behind an illusion/persona of a wealthy luxurious business man. -

I Can’t Make You Love Me Chris Oxley I have two pillars of memory with respect to Bonnie Raitt singing the torch song ballad “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” The first one was when I stayed the night at my friend Billy’s house and he left the radio on all night as we slept. As ridiculous as it sounds, that was strangely liberating and unobvious to me. Sure, I could recall in grade school having heard Huey Lewis and the News’ “Hip To Be Square” at my friend Jeff’s house while we slept, but that’s because we fell asleep right after we raided the fridge and forgot to turn Bonnie Raitt the radio off. I’d never once considered the simple idea of intentionally having music on during a school night slumber. The sky split open wide. Henceforth, I left the radio on “I Can’t Make You quietly during the night at home as well. I remember hearing R.E.M.’s broody “Drive” for Love Me” the first time this way. Luck of the Draw Anyway, I had just gone through a puppy love breakup, yet at the time it felt bigger-than- 06/1991 life devastating to my junior high heart. But when I woke up in the middle of the night and heard “I Can’t Make You Love Me” coming out of Billy’s radio, there was something Capitol comforting about a person having written a song whose chorus completely got how I was feeling in the moment. They understood me, I understood them. -

It's HIP to Be Square: Instruction, High Impact Practices, & the Framework
virtual IT’S HIP TO BE SQUARE: Instruction, High-Impact Practices, & the Framework Sarah Burns Gilchrist* INTRODUCTION Instructional Design for librarians is not always covered in graduate programs, but it can be supported through professional development and dedicated self-reflection. Librarians teaching semester-long courses as the primary instructor have an opportunity to develop unique instructional design methods to engage students. There is a high transferability of concepts learned from semester-long courses to typical librarian instruction like one-shot sessions, embedded library instruction, and/or the creation of online learning objects. At The University of Baltimore, librarians serve as primary instructors for INFO 110: Introduction to Information Literacy, a 3-credit, semester-long course for first-year undergraduate students. The University of Baltimore serves students representing di- verse perspectives related to culture, socioeconomic status, age, and educational identity. INFO 110 is designed to occur at the beginning of our students’ academic journey at The University of Baltimore, which aligns with High-Impact Practices (HIPs).1 Gretel Stock (Dean of University College at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point) advocates for librarians as full instructional partners, because we offer a breadth of knowledge that complements the depth of knowledge of subject-specific faculty.2 These qualities make us well-suited to meet the needs of students in INFO 110. Using concepts related to the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, High-Impact Practices (HIPs), inclusive pedagogy related to Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and in- structional design methods derived from user experience (UX) research, I developed an innovative instructional variation for our university’s Introduction to Information Literacy curriculum.
