  • How Russian Is Russian Evangelicalism?
TEMENOS NORDIC JOURNAL OF COMPARATIVE RELIGION Temenos Vol. 56 No. 2 (2020), 251–68 DOI: 10.33356/temenos.75254 ‘A Prophet Has No Honour in the Prophet’s Own Country’1: How Russian Is Russian Evangelicalism? IGOR MIKESHIN University of Helsinki Abstract The article discusses how the history of forced marginality and iso- lation of Russian-speaking evangelical Christians has shaped their theology and social ministry. Russian evangelicalism is a glocal phenomenon. It fully adheres to universal evangelical tenets, while it is shaped as a socioculturally and linguistically Russian phenom- enon. Its Russianness is manifested in the construction of a Russian evangelical narrative formulated as a response to the cultural and political discourse of modern Russia, and to Orthodox theology and application as evangelicals see it. This narrative is constructed with the language of the Synodal Bible in its present-day interpretation. Russian evangelicals are constantly accused of western influence, proselytism in the canonical land of the Russian Orthodox Church, and mistreating and misleading people. The article also argues against these accusations, emphasizing the history, hermeneutics, and social ministries of Russian evangelicalism. Keywords: Russian evangelical Christianity; glocalization; quinque solae; Russian Synodal Bible This article is an account of Russian-speaking evangelical Christianity, and its history and impact on present-day Russia. Reviewing the one-hundred- and-fifty-year history of evangelicalism in Russia, I demonstrate how the oppression, marginalization, and isolation of evangelicals in late Imperial and especially Soviet Russia shaped its present-day theology and social ministry. I further discuss the glocal nature of evangelicalism in Russia – its universal dogma and its local implications and applications.

  • Religious Pluralism
Please see the Cover and Contents in the last pages of this e-Book Online Study Materials on RELIGIOUS PLURALISM 8 RELIGION AND RELIGIOUS GROUPS: AN OVERVIEW RELIGION A religion is a set of common beliefs and practices generally held by a group of people, often codified as prayer, ritual, and religious law. Religion also encompasses ancestral or cultural traditions, writings, history, and mythology, as well as personal faith and mystic experience. The term “religion” refers to both the personal practices related to communal faith and to group rituals and communication stemming from shared conviction. In the frame of European religious thought, religions present a common quality, the “hallmark of patriarchal religious thought”: the division of the world in two comprehensive domains, one sacred, the other profane. Religion is often described as a communal system for the coherence of belief focusing on a system of thought, unseen being, person, or object, that is considered to be supernatural, sacred, divine, or of the highest truth. Moral codes, practices, values, institutions, tradition, rituals, and scriptures are often traditionally associated with the core belief, and these may have some overlap with concepts in secular philosophy. Religion is also often described as a “way of life”. The development of religion has taken many forms in various cultures. “Organised religion” generally refers to an organisation of people supporting the exercise of some religion with a prescribed set of beliefs, often taking the form of a legal entity (see religion-supporting organisation). Other religions believe in personal revelation. “Religion” is sometimes used interchangeably with “faith” or “belief system,” but is more socially defined than that of personal convictions.

  • The Septuagint and the Masoretic Text in the Orthodox Church(Es)* Alexandru Mihăilă**
The Septuagint and the Masoretic Text in the Orthodox Church(es)* Alexandru Mihăilă** In this article, I intend to survey the reception of versions of the Old Testament in the Orthodox churches, focusing on the Greek, Russian and Romanian Church, respectively. While Western biblical scholars gave precedence to the Hebrew text over the Septuagint, in the Orthodox world one can see a tension in the relationship between the two textual witnesses and sometimes, even recently, there are voices which tend to give the Septuagint total authority in the Church. Orthodox scholars in the field of Old Testament studies usually resort to the Hebrew text, but especially scholars from outside this field tend to promote the Septuagint as the Old Testament of the Orthodox Church. I shall use the argument of authority, which is improper for scientific argumentation, but it suits my research, as I try to understand the confessional positions held within Eastern Orthodoxy. Consequently, if a certain saint, acknowledged as such by a national Orthodox Church or by the entire Eastern Orthodox communion, embraces a particular view on this subject, this bears significantly on the issue. Keywords: Orthodox Church, Bible, Septuagint, Masoretic Text, Synodal Bible. Recent positions of Romanian theologians I begin with an overview of the Romanian Orthodox Church, which I know better. Immediately before and especially in the aftermath of the December Revolution, the future archbishop Bartolomeu Anania worked on an impor- tant biblical project. The result, published in 2001, was a new translation of the Bible, even if Archbishop Anania called it a “revised edition according to the Septuagint”.

  • Excuses for Defense of the Russian Synodal Bible Or Why I Quit Using the Synodal Bible
Excuses for defense of the Russian Synodal Bible Or Why I quit using the Synodal Bible Dr. Perry Demopoulos Note: All scripture quotations are from the Russian translation of the King James Bible (2017). Advocates of the Russian Synodal Bible will defend their version for many reasons. We understand that a great many folk have come to believe, read, preach and teach from the Synodal Bible, the Bible that has been used for many years since its publication. The complete Bible was published in 1876. We are thankful to God for the thousands of people that have been saved because of hearing truth from that Bible. We cannot deny these facts. But, that is no reason to neglect other facts about the Synodal text. There are two sides to a coin. The other facts are not pretty but they are true. “Truth always hurts” as they say. Paul said, “Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?” (Gal.4:16). True love, “…charity…rejoiceth in the truth” (1 Cor. 13:6) and also “Open rebuke is better than secret love” (Prov. 27:5). The fact of the matter, (the other side of the coin) is that there are numerous corrupt readings in the Synodal Bible. Any Russian speaking person that has any knowledge of the English language, when comparing the Synodal Bible with the Authorized Version of the King James Bible, and has an honest and sincere heart to know the truth can clearly see these facts. What we would like to do in this work is to simply state what many adherents (missionaries or Russia speaking people) of the Synodal Bible say in defense of their text.

  • 6. Orthodox Exegesis 2
FR. ALEXANDRU MIHĂILĂ 26 The Orthodox Bible and the Anaginoskomena Books of the Old Testament The Orthodox Bible and the Anaginoskomena Books of the Old Testament Abstract In Western academic scholarship, the status of the anaginoskomena (the books and additions not found in the Hebrew Bible, but in the Septuagint editions) in the Orthodox Church is not completely understood, especially regarding the differences between the Orthodox churches. For example, an introduction to the Old Testament from 2009 FR. ALEXANDRU MIHĂILĂ assumes that the anaginoskomena have “incontestable Faculty of Orthodox Theology authority”, quoting professor Petros Vassiliadis. Apart “Justinian Patriarhul” from the Hebrew canon, other ten books are reckoned University of Bucharest [email protected] by the Orthodox, eight of them reckoned by the Catholics as well (Judith, Tobith, 1-2 Maccabees, Wisdom of Salomon, Ben Sira, Baruch, and Epistle of Jeremiah) and two books not accepted by the Catholics (3 Maccabees and 1 Esdras / 3 Ezra). The canonicity of other books, such as the Prayer of king Manasseh (with Odes) and Psalm 151 remains debatable. The Greek Church completes the list with 4 Maccabees and the Russian Church with 4 Ezra (Römer, Macchi, Nihan 2009). In another Western introduction, the fine separation of the Orthodox churches is completely unknown. The authors simply assume that the biblical books canonized by the Tridentin council in 1546 were canonized by the Orthodox Church in the council of Jerusalem in 1672 (Dietrich et al 2014). A more articulated view is present in the recent volume of proceedings regarding the biblical canon at the Eastern churches (Farrugia, Vergani 2017).
