My name is Erik Johnson, and I am the digital library coordinator and archivist here at the Theodore Roosevelt Center at Dickinson State University. How is everyone doing today? [Answers hopefully] Good, good. Well, I’m excited to be here to talk to you a little bit about Theodore Roosevelt and take a look at some of the primary sources we have. Just to give you a little background about where I work before I jump into talking about Theodore Roosevelt, the Theodore Roosevelt Center is a digital library that aims to collect and digitize any and all documents related to Theodore Roosevelt. The bulk of our materials are from the Library of Congress’s collection of Theodore Roosevelt’s papers, but we’ve also partnered with a variety of institutions and individuals across the country who have an interest in Roosevelt. These include places ranging from Harvard University, where Roosevelt attended college, to a host of sites run by the National Park Service either related to or created by Roosevelt, to Public Libraries, Historical Societies, and individual enthusiasts holding materials created by or related to Roosevelt. While some of our materials are available online in other places, the goal of our digital library is to bring all these items together in one virtual collection and describe them in order to make them much more easily found and used by researchers, scholars, and the general public. Now, actually getting into today’s topic, Theodore Roosevelt was—before, during, and after his presidency—a figure of almost overwhelming vitality who came into contact with locations and events across the globe.

A man embodying the energy and promise of the New World came at this opportune time. In eight years, he made America's presence felt across the globe, looked out for the common man, fought injustice wherever he saw it, and took on the political bosses and industrialists. And, if his two heroes, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, had defined the presidency, he modernized it to fit a changing world. Theodore Roosevelt barely survived childhood. Illness might have slowed his body but his mind raced. He transformed his sickly frame into an athletic, rugged body. Gable, Ph.D. Executive Director, Theodore Roosevelt Association THEODORE ROOSEVELT (1858-1919) Theodore Roosevelt, born in New York City on October 27, 1858, was the twenty-sixth President of the United States, and a dynamic, colorful, multi-talented, charismatic man who became a hero to millions of Americans. TR was a sickly child who overcame the handicaps of severe asthma and poor eyesight to become a cowboy in the "wild west," the Colonel of the "Rough Riders" in the Spanish-American War, and a field naturalist and hunter in Africa and South America, leading what he called "the strenuous life." In politics and government, Roosevelt was a reformer who championed the "Square Deal" for all Americans. He was also the President who established the United states as a world power, built up the Navy, preached the doctrine of "speak softly and carry a big stick," and became the first American to win the Nobel Peace Prize. TR was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1881 at the age of 23. After the tragic deaths of his wife and mother in the same house on the same day, February 14, 1884, TR became a cattle rancher in the Bad Lands of the Dakota territory.

Marsh, a U.S. Congressman from Vermont, called attention to the destructive impact that people were having on the land, especially in deforestation. He called for a “conservationists approach to the management of the forested land” because we were depleting our nation’s natural resources with devastating speed. By 1860 the negative exploitation of tourism and livestock grazing in the high country of Yosemite were causing rampant and irreversible damage. Ongoing poaching and park devastation in Yellowstone required Congress to deploy the U.S. Army to build a camp at Mammoth Hot Springs to protect wildlife and natural reserves in 1886. The rookeries that provided nurseries for nesting young birds and the egrets and herons that graced the Florida landscape were being slaughtered at a rate of 5 million a year in 1886 to provide feathers for women’s hats.
