Mandela Was Late traverses the inner universe of a satiric genius who maybe should be getting out of the house a little more often. Wrapped in his cocoon of Hollywood residuals, battling his own (mounting?) foibles day by day, former Seinfeld writer/producer Peter Mehlman somehow manages to see the world a little more clearly than the rest of us. Ride along through the arc of time drawn by six separate moving violations; only in L.A. can you mark life’s mileposts by the traffic citations you receive. Share the thrill of being nominated for an Emmy, and the agony of not winning… early in the evening. Meet a fictive pundit who becomes famous for publishing blank space; a detective who is ready to reopen the O.J.     THE CULTURE OF POST-NARCISSISM The Culture of Post-Narcissism Post-teenage, Pre-midlife Singles Culture in Seinfeld, Friends, and Ally – Seinfeld in Particular MICHAEL SKOVMAND In a recent article, David P. Pierson makes a persuasive case for considering American television comedy, and sitcoms in particular, as ‘Modern Comedies of Manners’. These comedies afford a particular point of entry into contemporary mediatised negotiations of ‘civility’, i.e. how individual desires and values interface with the conventions and stand- ards of families, peer groups and society at large. The apparent triviality of subject matter and the hermetic appearance of the groups depicted may deceive the unsuspecting me- dia researcher into believing that these comedies are indeed “shows about nothing”. The following is an attempt to point to a particular range of contemporary American televi- sion comedies as sites of ongoing negotiations of behavioural anxieties within post-teen- age, pre-midlife singles culture – a culture which in many aspects seems to articulate central concerns of society as a whole. This range of comedies can also be seen, in a variety of ways, to point to new ways in which contemporary television comedy articu- lates audience relations and relations to contemporary culture as a whole. American television series embody the time-honoured American continental dicho- tomy between the West Coast and the East Coast. The West Coast – LA – signifies the Barbie dolls of Baywatch, and the overgrown high school kids of Beverly Hills 90210. On the East Coast – more specifically New York and Boston, a sophisticated tradition of television comedy has developed since the early 1980s far removed from the beach boys and girls of California.

    “The Drama of Dedication and Betrayal”: Betrayal in the Life and Works of James Joyce James A. Fraser PhD University of York English October 2013 Abstract This thesis offers an account of the role of betrayal in the works of poet, playwright, novelist, and occasional journalist, James Joyce. Moving away from pathologizing conceptions of Joyce as “obsessed” with betrayal, I follow the development of this theme throughout a range of Joyce’s writings. Joyce came to an understanding of the workings of this narrative as a young child, experiencing the national trauma of the downfall of Irish politician Charles Stewart Parnell and the fallout of this affair in his own household. At his father’s promptings, Joyce learned to experience betrayal as an active, though invisible force in Irish affairs, from the quotidian to the grandiose. This thesis contends, however, that this early understanding of betrayal as an “immanent” force gives way to a highly self-aware investigation into the dramatic and narrative potential of betrayal as a structuring principle in human relationships. Looking in detail at three of Joyce’s literary works—A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Exiles, and Ulysses—as well as a selection of Joyce’s Triestine journalism and criticism, I attempt to offer a narrative account of how the theme of betrayal operates in and is operated on by Joyce’s texts. In Joyce’s non-fiction we find a reliance on betrayal as a means to introduce a note of melancholic pathos to nominally journalistic pieces. But in betrayal Joyce also finds a way to critique Irish constructions of heroic failure and to support the healthy antagonism necessary to his principled exile.

Having never written a script, Mehlman sent a humor piece he had written for the New York Times Magazine. Jerry Seinfeld loved it and gave Mehlman a writing assignment...Mehlman was hired for the first full season of ‘Seinfeld’ as a program consultant (1991-92) and, over the next six years, worked his way up to co-executive producer.” When Mehlman wrote his first script for Seinfeld, he drove home, and he had a message (“yedie”) on his machine from Jerry and Larry David that they absolutely loved the script. “Right then,” he said, “I had this feeling that my life was about to change (“baytn”).
