Making Room Opportunities for Listening: by Glenda Robinson, Organist and Children’s Choir Director What does music do for us? Why is the scripture filled with so many admonitions to sing and make music? What is the purpose of music in worship? Music is not a filler, like the stuffing in an Oreo cookie. It is not just something extra to fill empty spaces. Its purpose is not just to bring beauty to the service or to cover silence Advent while the offering is gathered or communion is served. Hymns are not included in the service just to give us a break between readings and prayers. Music in worship is not a filler. It is an invitation to empty our minds of lesser things so we are able we make room to hear God’s voice. Evensong Quiet, reflective music can increase our focus, improve our mood, and lead us to a state of calm. Happy music can increase creativity, decrease stress, and remind us to be grateful for the blessings in our lives. Music is Food for the Brain. Music creates many pathways in the brain. Listening to music can increase the size of the hippocampus where new memories are stored. Scientists have “discovered” that the biblical mandate is true; we should sing! Singing impacts the brain in a different and more powerful way than speaking or reading the same words. The words we learn while singing stay with us longer than those we learn in other ways. Music is used as a rehabilitation tool for those who have suffered memory loss as well as for insomnia, depression, The Annunciation, Workshop of Robert Campin, 1420 and anxiety. Alzheimer’s patients often find it impossible to communicate with words but they can sing all the words to Sunday, December 2, 2018 songs they sang in their youth. Let us put that to heart; Sing Five o’clock in the evening in the Church what you want to remember Forever. Come begin your journey through Advent in the beauty of holiness Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote that “It is the voice of the Church Nursery and Child Care Provided that is heard in singing together. It is not you that sings, it is the Church that is singing, and you, as a member of the Church, may share in its song.” What is the Church’s song? According to hymn writer Carl Schalk, the Church’s song “is ADVENT MUSIC the sweeping narrative—the rich, deep, multi-faceted story RT Opportunities for of God’s plan of salvation for the world.

Luke 2:4-12 The Greatest Gift Main idea: God gave us the greatest gift: Jesus Christ. Born in a manger, and then died on a cross. And if really receive that gift, you’re going to want to give Him your life as well. I want to give just a few of you a small gift right now. When you came in this morning, many of you received a bulletin, and most of your bulletins are completely black and white. But about 4 or 5 of you randomly received a bulletin in color, which is instantly recognizable because of the red graphic at the top. So, if you have a color bulletin, go ahead and raise your hand right now. I have a very small gift for you. [Pastor Chris distributes gifts] Now, that’s just a small gift. And I’m sure none of you who received this gift are so blown away that you’re going to go home today and just tell everyone you know, call them all up, and say, “You should have been at church this morning, because when I went today, I received this gift, and wow, this is just the most amazing gift and I didn’t have to do anything to earn it! I was just given this gift for free!” Are any of you going to go home and do that? I would love if you did, but not if you’re just talking about this gift, but rather, a different one. Because probably within a week, and certainly within a year, every one of you will forget that you received this small gift, but this morning I’m going to be talking to you about another gift that, if you receive it, can completely transform your whole life.1 [Christmas gift video] [Christmas music plays while the father goes through bills and his daughter wraps a gift] Father: Stop wasting this! • The Greatest Gift
THE GREATEST GIFT Dear Families, Merry Christmas in just a few short days! We’ve been looking forward to this day all year long! Can you believe it’s here? The Jewish people had been looking forward to the day when God would finally send His Rescuer as prophesized in the Old Testament. But Jesus coming as a baby did not fit in with their picture. They were looking for freedom from the tyran- ny of Rome and hard life they lived. Mary and Joseph did not dream that they would be part of God’s rescuing plan. Can you imagine Mary’s shock when she found out that she would be Jesus’ mother? And Joseph’s shock when he found out his soon-to-be wife was pregnant with God’s Son? It would have been hard to believe! Can you imagine the shepherd’s shock when a chorus of angels appeared to announce that the Rescuer had been born? They had been looking forward to this day for hundreds of years – and it was finally here. Start with prayer followed by watching The Journey Today video lesson with your children, Bible reading and questions. We have also included a worship song, Oh What a Glorious Night by Sidewalk Prophet to remind all of us to prepare room for Him this Christmas.
