    COMMON STATEMENT ON THE US-EU WINE TRADE RELATIONSHIP June 14, 2021 The EU and the US wine sectors play a critical role in supporting a vibrant transatlantic trade relationship. This sector is an essential driving force for many rural economies and for a significant number of medium and small enterprises. The undersigned deeply regret that the wine sector, as a notable industry in our two economies is sometimes caught in the crosshairs of unrelated trade disputes, causing economic damage to producers, and putting the millions of jobs that they support at risk. Consumers are also victims of those trading conflicts, which can lead to higher prices and reduced consumer choice. We urge the European Union and the US to resolve current trade disputes, to stop any related retaliatory action against wine exports, and to strengthen their bilateral partnership in order to avoid any sanctions against those sectors, including in the context of the current World Trade Organization Large Civil Aircraft Airbus-Boeing disputes. As legislators and policy makers on both sides of the Atlantic, we acknowledge the importance and benefits of strengthening this bilateral partnership. Both the U.S. and the EU are each other’s largest export markets, with the total wine trade reaching more than $5.3 billion (€4.5 billion) annually, creating jobs and investment and supporting sustainable agriculture on both sides of the Atlantic. We ask our governments to further support the economic vitality and diversity of our wine sectors by working to remove all tariffs on wine to achieve a “zero for zero” wine trade environment.

    Hon. Mr President of the European Parliament, Dear David Sassoli, Since March, when the outbreak of COVID-19 intensified in Europe, the functioning of the European Parliament (EP) has changed dramatically, due to the sanitary measures applied. We understand the inevitability of the contingency plan, taking into account the need to prevent infection and the spread of the virus and to protect the health and lives of people. Six months later, the functioning of the EP is gradually returning to normal. However, there are services whose unavailability seriously impairs parliamentary work, namely the interpretation service. The European Union (EU) has 24 official languages and all deserve the same respect and treatment. We recognize that the number of languages available in committee meeting rooms has been increasing, but even so, more than half of the languages still have no interpretation. Multilingualism is a right enshrined in the Treaties that allows Members to express themselves in their own language. Now, that is not happening and we are concerned that the situation will continue, even taking into account the expected workflow in the commissions after these atypical six months. In this sense, we appeal, once again, to you, the President of the EP for the application of the letter and the spirit of the principle of multilingualism, finding solutions that respect this principle and that allow the use of any of the 24 official languages of the EU. The expression of each deputy in her/his own language is a priority so that there can be conditions to fully exercise the mandate for which she/he was elected and a condition of respect for the citizens who elected her/him.

    Mrs. Stella Kyriakides Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Dear Mrs. Kyriakides, EU Member States are dealing with unprecedented challenges arising from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and health systems are now focused on social distancing and avoidance of non-urgent, non-COVID-19 related medical care. Unfortunately, the strains on our health systems and the difficulties are not being borne equally by the population - pregnant women in particular - still require competent and compassionate labor, birth and postpartum care. We have been approached by the international NGO “Human Rights in Childbirth” regarding concerns about the negative consequences to labor and birth care as health systems focus on tackling COVID-19. In this time of a health crisis, changes are being made to the provision of pregnancy and birth care which are not based on scientific evidence, WHO guidelines or guidelines of relevant European professional organisations. Those changes are arguably unnecessary and, in many cases, not proportional to the response required to the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, we are informed that: • Maternity services are being de-prioritised with regards to adequate staffing, personal protective equipment for staff and access to needed resources • Community and out of hospital maternity services (including midwifery units and home birth) are being closed down without warning • Women are being forced to submit to unwanted inductions and scheduled caesarean sections with no obstetric indication • Women are being separated from their newborn infants • Women are being denied the right to a companion in labour and birth, as well as visitors All citizens are entitled to the protection of their right to the highest attainable level of health during this crisis.

Women’s rights activists often face arrest and detention without charges. While the Saudi Government has lifted the ban on women driving, since 2018 more than 30 activists, both men and women, have been arrested and often tortured, often without any formal charges. Among them, Samar Badawi, Nassima Al-Sada and Loujain Al-Hathloul, women who fought against the male guardianship system or even dared to run for office. Saudi Arabia is a member of the UN Human Rights Council, 36 of whose member countries publicly criticised it for its human rights records in March 2019. Against this backdrop: 1. These values have made Europe objectively one of the best places for its citizens to live and to thrive. Membership of the EU has served to inspire Member States to foster these values to the fullest. In the process, the European community has evolved into a political entity with democratic institutions to safeguard and promote the values we cherish, namely through our directly elected European Parliament, which in tum elects the European Commission. Furthermore, democratically elected governments back the members of your Council. There still are however, flaws in the democratic fabric of our ever-evolving Union. Today we urge you and your Council to address one of these flaws. A European Union that values equality between the citizens that make up our society should have institutions that reflects those values. Currently the Act concerning the election of the members of the European Parliament by direct universal suffrage is limiting citizens' representation in the European Parliament, where their Members exercise their right to maternity, paternity or parental leave during the latter stages of pregnancy or following the birth of a child. Not only are such limitations creating a democratic deficit for some European citizens but they further undermine the core European tenet of gender equality, with the majority of Members affected being pregnant and post-natal women.

    8 February 2021 Dear Birgit Sippel MEP, HE Ambassador Nuno Brito on behalf of the EU Council, Dear Commissioner Ylva Johansson, We are writing to you to call on you to find an agreement on the Temporary Derogation to the ePrivacy Directive without further delay, which effectively allows the continuation of current practices to detect known and new child sexual abuse material, and grooming. The Commission’s Regulation proposal for a Temporary Derogation to the ePrivacy Directive was adopted last September 10th; the EU Council adopted its negotiating mandate on October 28th and we voted a clear mandate during the plenary session of the European Parliament on December 2020. We voted last December a clear text to ensure that online services like instant messaging and email can continue to use technology to specifically detect child sexual abuse images and videos, and grooming. These technologies work by filtering all communications in search for patterns of possible child sexual abuse, in the same way as similar technologies are used to detect malware and spam. Therefore, a prohibition to systematically search all communications would de facto prevent the continued use of current technologies to detect child sexual abuse online. Given the lack of agreement in trilogues in December, some companies have already stopped using these technologies to detect, report and remove child sexual abuse online. In just 3 weeks following the 21st of December, the US National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) reported a drastic 46% drop in the reports of EU-related child sexual abuse online cases. We are following with deep concerns the development of the current negotiations, given that the lack of an agreement is putting children in severe jeopardy.
