  • Parish of Earsdon and Backworth
DIOCESE OF NEWCASTLE PATRONAGE (BENEFICES) MEASURE 1986 Parish of Earsdon and Backworth Statement prepared by the P.C.C. describing the Church’s ministry and mission within the parish 1. The Local Community Please describe the size and physical features of the parish, the industry, the principal institutions, all schools, and the general category (e.g. UPA inner city, UPA housing estate, urban, suburban, market town, commuter village, village/rural). Also details of any predominant age and/or social groups, the ethnic mix, and any special social problems, e.g. unemployment, etc. The Parish of Earsdon and Backworth is located in the north east corner of the Tynemouth Deanery, on the outskirts of the attractive seafront town of Whitley Bay. There are two church buildings in the parish: St. Alban’s, Earsdon, and St John’s, Backworth, which are only two miles apart. As well as these two villages, the parish incorporates Wellfield, parts of West Monkseaton and the Red House Farm estate. The overall population of the parish has increased considerably to around 8,000, with the recent building of two large new estates in the parish: West Park, Shiremoor, with over 200 4&5 bedroomed detached houses and Backworth Park with about 290 3&4 bedroomed houses. Both estates are situated within walking distance of one or both churches. The wider area has recently been much developed and hence the parish is close to hundreds of other new houses in adjoining parishes: our churches frequently welcome newcomers from these estates who find it easier to come to St Alban’s.

  • EDITORIAL by the Time You Read This Our Conference Will Be Over, and the Autumn Session of Meetings Will Be Well Under Way
EDITORIAL By the time you read this our Conference will be over, and the Autumn session of meetings will be well under way. The Society continues to grow, and the various local groups are all flourishing. Various projects such as Census Indexing and M.I. Recording are proceeding, but more volunteers to assist in the work are always welcome. As mentioned in the last issue of the Journal, our Treasurer John Scott is retiring from the job after a stint of eight years, and in recognition of his long and devoted service he is to be made an Honorary Life Member of the Society. We were worried about finding a successor to take over from John, but fortunately a volunteer, Miss Cindy Winters, has come forward, and we wish her well in her new position. Liz Lyall, the prime mover in the organisation of our Annual Conferences, is also retiring, and we take this opportunity of thanking her for all the work she has put in to make our Conferences so successful. I trust that members will continue to submit articles and other items of interest for publication in the Journal. It is time we had a Durham parish in the `Know Your Parish' series: there have only been six (Medomsley, Heworth, Chester-le-Street, Washington, Tanfield and Hetton-le-Hole) since the series started more than eight years ago! So how about it, you Durham folk? NEWS IN BRIEF We Should've Listened to Grandma Dr Noeline Kyle, of the Faculty of Education, University of Wollongong, P.O. Box 1144, WOLLONGONG 2500, AUSTRALIA, is writing a book to be entitled We Should've Listened to Grandma: Tracing Women Ancestors.

Service Changes in Northumberland and Tyne & Wear From Sunday 1st September 2019 We are making changes to some services in Northumberland and Tyne & Wear from Sunday 1st September 2019 to improve punctuality, better match capacity with demand and respond to requests we have received from customers. All of the changes are described in detail below. You can download revised timetables for each service from our website (www.arrivabus.co.uk/north-east). Printed leaflets are available on buses and from the Ashington, Blyth, Morpeth and Newcastle Haymarket bus stations. Service 1: Blyth – Cowpen – Bedlington Station – Ashington – Lynemouth – Ellington – Widdrington There will be minor changes to the route and timetable in Ashington to improve punctuality following completion of the roadworks in the town centre. • 1 Tyne & Wear Archives User Guide 3 Methodist Registers
TYNE & WEAR ARCHIVES USER GUIDE 3 METHODIST REGISTERS 1. Registers before 1791 From its origins in the 1730s until the death of John Wesley in 1791 Methodism was closely connected with the Church of England. Many Methodists also attended the parish church (until their gradual exclusion) and hence were usually baptised, married, and buried by the Church of England clergy; entries, therefore appear in the parish registers, sometimes under a separate section for ‘dissenters'. A few Methodist registers survive from the later part of this period. The earliest for Tyne and Wear dates from 1787 - a register of baptisms in the Orphan House, Newcastle (MF 286). 2. 1791-1837 After the death of Wesley, Methodism soon became a separate denomination. It was governed by a Conference and organised nationally as a `Connexion' divided into Districts each made up of Circuits consisting of a number of individual churches or `societies'. During this period there were several divisions in Methodism all of which produced their own registers. The most important were: Wesleyan Methodists: the original and largest group Methodist New Connexion: formed in 1797 Primitive Methodists: originated in Staffordshire in 1807-8 and spread rapidly, especially in northern England Bible Christians: formed in Devon in 1815 and centred mainly in the south west, but there was a group of chapels in Northumberland later taken over by the Primitive Methodists Wesleyan Methodist most of these groups joined in 1857 to Association form the united Methodist Free Churches Wesleyan Reformers: (UMFC) Registers were sometimes kept for individual churches, sometimes for a group of churches or a whole circuit in the same volume.
