Bab I Pendahuluan BAB I PENDAHULUAN 1.1. Department of Justice, n.d.) . Pernyataan ini tampak sejalan dengan pendapat Lonnie G. Bunch III (2020), seorang penulis yang juga direktur pendiri National Museum Universitas Pelita Harapan 3 of African American History and Culture dimana dalam sebuah esai singkat Bunch menulis Not only have we been forced to grapple with the impact of a global pandemic, but we have also been forced to confront the reality that, despite gains made in the past 50 years, we are still a nation riven by inequality and racial division. Dalam halaman pengantar bukunya So You Want to Talk About Race, Oluo (2018) menulis : As a black woman, race has always been a prominent part of my life I have never been able to escape the fact that I am a black woman in a white supremacist country. Selain buku, berbagai dokumenter muncul mengangkat isu serupa, yakni tentang rasisme. Dalam salah satu dokumenter berjudul 8 minutes and 46 seconds: The Killing of George Floyd, tidak hanya membahas tentang George Floyd saja tetapi secara dalam membahas berbagai momen mengerikan dan menampilkan gambaran protes global yang terjadi. Terdapat beberapa narasi menarik dari dokumenter ini, oleh Zellie Imani (2020), aktivis gerakan Black Lives Matter mengatakan We realize that our lives do not matter to so many other people and is not recognized by the system that's working to dehumanize us and oppressing Universitas Pelita Harapan 5 us. we're not saying that our lives matter to anybody else's. we're saying that black lives matter just as much as anybody else's and we deserve quality life just like anyone else. Beberapa diantaranya seperti, film Say Her Name: The Life and Death of Sandra Bland (2018), mengisahkan aktivis Sandra Bland yang ditarik karena pelanggaran lalu lintas tetapi tiga hari kemudian, ditemukan tewas di sel penjaranya. "The Hate U Give Little Baby Fucks Everybody." Awalnya dipopulerkan di tahun 90-an oleh Tupac Shakurs, seorang rapper asal Amerika Serikat dimana kemudian menginspirasi karya lain yaitu novel debut Angie Thomas, The Hate U Give.

  • About Just Mercy
TOOLKIT ALWAYS DO THE RIGHT THING, EVEN WHEN THE RIGHT THING IS THE HARD THING HARD THE IS THING RIGHT THE WHEN EVEN ABOUT JUST MERCY The film Just Mercy is based on an award-winning book of the same name by attorney Bryan Stevenson, played by Michael B. Jordan. Raised in rural Delaware, Stevenson regularly attended the African Methodist Episcopal Church, where he developed a strong sense of justice and compassion. He earned a law degree and a Masters in Public Policy from Harvard, and in 1989 he launched the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) in Montgomery, Alabama, which is committed to ending mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the United States, along with challenging racial and economic injustice, and protecting basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in American society. EJI has won reversals, relief, or release from prison for over 140 wrongly condemned prisoners on death row. One of those stories is at the center of Just Mercy. Walter McMillian, played by Jamie Foxx, was convicted and sentenced to death for a murder he did not commit. For more than four years, Bryan Stevenson fought for justice and mercy against a system stacked against him and his client at every turn. Stevenson has gained international recognition for his work defending the poor and un- fairly incarcerated, and has said, “The opposite of poverty is not wealth...the opposite of poverty is justice.” JUST MERCY embodies the mission of forgiveness and redemption for people who have been incarcerated, and demands a fair legal system, free of extreme sentences.

In this introduction, Paul is expressing his gratitude towards those in the church for their faithfulness even in the midst of persecution. just mercy free download Just mercy free download. Just Mercy is a movie starring Jamie Foxx, Charlie Pye Jr., and Michael Harding. World-renowned civil rights defense attorney Bryan Stevenson works to free a wrongly condemned death row prisoner. A powerful and thought-provoking true-story, "Just Mercy" follows young lawyer Bryan Stevenson (Jordan) and his history-making battle for justice. After graduating from Harvard, Bryan might have had his pick of lucrative jobs. Instead, he heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned, with the support of local advocate Eva Ansley (Larson.) One of his first, and most incendiary, cases is that of Walter McMillian (Foxx,) who, in 1987, was sentenced to die for the notorious murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite a preponderance of evidence proving his innocence and the fact that the only testimony against him came from a criminal with a motive to lie. In the years that follow, Bryan becomes embroiled in a labyrinth of legal and political maneuverings and overt and unabashed racism as he fights for Walter, and others like him, with the odds-and the system-stacked against them. • DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. Stevenson Remembers His
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. Stevenson remembers his grandmother telling him throughout his childhood, “You can’t understand most of the important things from a distance, Bryan. You have to get close.” How do we see the author getting close to issues of punishment and mass incarceration throughout the book? What are some examples of Stevenson getting close to the incarcerated people he works with? How does getting close to Walter McMillian affect his life? Stevenson writes that injustice occurs when “we allow fear, anger, and distance to shape the way we treat the most vulnerable among us.” As you begin your collegiate studies, how will you get close to the issues that are most important to you? 2. After working with low-income and incarcerated people for many years, Stevenson came to believe that “the opposite of poverty is not wealth; the opposite of poverty is justice.” How do you see poverty affecting people’s lives in Just Mercy? Are there any examples of poverty and justice existing at the same time? What are some of the different meanings of the word “just” used throughout the book? Have Stevenson’s experiences influenced your own definition of justice? 3. As you read the book, what were your reactions to descriptions of the criminal justice system? Why does the author compare his own brokenness to the brokenness of the system? Do you believe that broken people can be healed? What does it mean to show mercy within a broken system? 4. Stevenson writes that there are four primary institutions that shape the conversation around race and justice today: slavery, racial terror and the threat of violence against people of color, Jim Crow laws that legalized segregation, and mass incarceration.
