Mata Gujri Ji

Mata Gujri ji, wife of the 9thSikh , Guru Tegh Bahadurji, and mother of the 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind ji, is an inspirational figure in the Sikh history who faced many challenging circumstances. Mata Gujri was the daughter of Bhailal Chand Subulikka and BishanKaur, a pious couple of Kartarpur. She married (Guru) Tegh Bahadur on February 4th1633.After Tegh BahadurJi was installed as Guru in 1664, he went with his mother Nanaki, and his wife Gujri to . Mata Gujri gave birth to a son on December 22nd 1666 in Patna. The child was named GobindRai, the illustrious . Guru TeghBahadur returned to Patna in 1670 for a brief stay before he left for , instructing the family to proceed to Lakhnaur, now in Haryana. July 11th, 1675 was a momentous day in Sikh history when left for Delhi prepared to make the supreme sacrifice. Mata Gujri showed courage at the time of parting and bore the ultimate trial with fortitude. Guru Tegh Bahadur was executed in Delhi on November 11th1675. Guru Gobind Singh was young. The responsibility of managing the affairs at Chakk Nanaki, initially, fell on Mata Gujri. When in face of a prolonged siege by hostile hill rajas and Mughal troops,Guru Gobind Singh had to evacuate Chakk Nanaki (Anandpur) on the night of December 5-6th,1705.Mata Gujri with her grandsons, and , aged nine and seven years respectively, were separated from the main group while crossing the rivulet Sarsa. Mata Gujri and her grandsons were arrested on December 8th, and confined in Sirhind Fort in what is referred to in Sikh chronicles as ThandaBurj, the cold tower. As the children were summoned to appear in court from day to day, the grandmother kept urging them to remain steadfast in their faith. On December 11th, they were ordered to be bricked up alive in a wall, but, since the masonry crumbled before it covered their heads, they were executed the following day. Mata Gujri jiwas imprisoned on top of a tower which was opened from all sides without any warm clothes in the month of December. She continued the tradition of and without complaints gave her life singing Guru kiBani.

Mata Gujri jiattained martyrdom the same day as her grandsons, and became the first woman in Sikh history. She is also distinguished by being the wife of a martyr (Guru Tegh Bahadur), mother of a martyr (Guru Gobind Singh), grandmother of four martyr Sahibzadas (, , Zorawar Singh, and Fateh Singh), sister of a martyr Kirpal Chand and aunt of five martyr sons of BibiViro, sister of Guru Tegh Bahadur. The word “Stree” originates from Sanskrit and means “expansion.” In a physical sense women expand by being mothers. In a spiritual sense, women give their children the ideals and values to live by; they nurture a sense of security; and they have the power to construct or destroy their families and their generations to come. So, it is only pertinent to say that Mata Gujri was a “PuranStree” in both the physical and spiritual realms.

Of Mothers in the world, Many sparkle but one shines Your glory unmatched, your legacy divine. Mata Gujri Jeeo… You served him in meditation, Loved him in despair Your husband: the Saint of . Mata Gujri Jeeo … You birthed King of kings, Raised him extraordinaire Without his father since he was nine. Mata Gujri Jeeo … Walking the path of death, You gave us new life Courage undying, Conviction unwavering Direction to motherhood,Womanhood and sainthood Your path I shall ever trace, O Mother Sublime. T h r e e years of long journey..started with a single step, when I took the decision for my graduations in Dehradun. Choosing a hostel which is perfect for spending this crucial time was no lesser than a puzzle, but I am glad that I chose MATA GUJRI GIRLS HOSTEL. The ambiance took all the fears away, just like that.and I met many new faces who are now,a big part of my life.

"ENJOY THE LITTLE THINGS IN YOU LIFE…FOR ONE DAY YOU'LL LOOK BACK AND THEY WERE THE BIG THINGS…" It has been a great experience, the services, the staff and most importantly the guidance and motherly love from our dear Warden mam makes this-a home away from home! Most importantly-the opportunities, that are provided, plays a great role in shaping the overall personality of a student and making the person more self sufficient, that has worked for me ZIENAT BAZAMI too.I am obliged to be a part of this institute as a student and B.Sc Medical Microbiology(2015-18) Vice institute Captain. This has not only provided me the knowledge on educational field but also gave me a new aspect of life.

Hostel is the best part of our growing up days. The bitter and sweet memories of those by gone days will always bring a smile on our faces. I have learnt so much being a part of MGH family and my hostel life had begun with the wise words of our warden mam. My entire experience in the MGH family was only for a period of 2 years while I was pursuing master’s in pharmacy, yet it was a phenomenal journey and an unforgettable part of my life. Talking about the social life at MGH comprised of girls from different fields, disciplines, states, culture and religion, yet living all together like sisters in the friendly atmosphere of MGH. Infrastructure of our hostel is also adorable as it brings us more to close the nature by surrounding us with lovely trees, flowers, etc. apart from fresh atmosphere we have well furnished rooms, ventilated windows, power and water supply, etc. The food was phenomenal, the atmosphere was inviting, and the times spent were unforgettable lovely friends at MGH. I really owe my sincere thanks to our respected warden mam who has always been so supportive for all the students throughout my journey. MAHAK ARORA (m.pharm 2nd year) 12 Batch 2016-18

It was a privilege to be a part of Mata Gujri Girls Hostel. It has been a great journey throughout. Each day brings you a new learning experience. It is not only the place where you spend your time studying but also have many occasions for enjoying too. Best part is to be under the guidance of Warden Ma'am who has taught us how to live life confidently and carefully and how to overcome the obstacles in life. I will miss the days I've spent here and will take and remember everything I've learnt from this place throughout my life.

KUSHBOO KOUL BPt 2014-2018

Stepping into MGH was heartbreaking for the first time. And now as its time to leave this place, the feeling is still the same. MGH has given me a lot of experiences. The rules and regulations which may not seem pleasing to everybody is what MGH stands for. Above all that is what makes you a better person. Being a part of NCC helped me bring out my hidden talents. Being really far from home, I never missed celebrating any festival as MGH gave me essence of not only the festivals of my culture but of the other part of the country as well. And trust me it was fun being part of them. Lastly the care, concern and love is what made me comfortable here. And that was none other than Warden Ma'am who gave me all of these and support that helped me come out as a confident and a good human being. A lot of memories are to be cherished. MGH will be missed.

The six letters word 'HOSTEL' is not merely a word. It's the combination of feeling of love, a second home, care, support, friendship and scolding at the same time that creates a small family and a small world. It is the place where you not only get educated but also its concrete like discipline, gratitude, kindness and being a good human. It takes time to adjust in a new habitat but once you are ready you are the strongest of all. And our Warden Ma'am here is the best part of the hostel one could expect. She is the blend of grace, beauty, knowledge, compassion and master of all. I had such an amazing and a long journey here that I can write an entire book about it. I wish the new aspirants the same experience. APOORVA THAKUR BPt 2014-2018

Coming to SBS was a big turning point in my life as it meant to stay away from family (cause I belong to PUNE) and coming and staying here in Dehradun with people that I don't know was a challenge well all fell in place, staying in MGH, made me more Independent, made me self suf cient and I made new friends who are more like a small FAMILY now.
