‘Transfiguration’ by Lodovico Carracci, 1594, depicting Elijah, Jesus, and Moses with the three apostles. The Transfiguration of Jesus is an episode in the New Testament narrative in which Jesus is transfigured (or metamorphosed) and becomes radiant upon a mountain.

Computer Training in Your Own Home Hello everyone, Father David here this month and I've headed these pearls of wisdom so because that is what my study is, a room full of junk in which the cats One to one instruction and trouble shooting hide. This article thus comes from the living room table much to the annoyance of

my wife! 01242 680877 www.colinbarnfather.co.uk What can we say about August other than it is the month for the Church of England to go to sleep? According to the religious calendar, there's plenty to

occupy us spiritually if we allow ourselves to be so moved; here's a list. A company that’s at the very Heart of the community. The 6th is the Feast of the Transfiguration, the revelation to the disciples Peter, James and John that Jesus was Divine not just a man - it's also the day on which The Robert Hitchins Group the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima! On the 7th is the feast day of Pope Sixths (who!?) and his companions, martyred in Rome by the emperor Valerian in Boddington Manor, Cheltenham 680694 257 A.D. Of no interest to most of us perhaps, except that one of his Deacons, St Lawrence was also martyred four days after his Bishop for presenting to the authorities the treasures of the Church who were the poor, the sick and the lame; he is also the Patron saint of Sandhurst.

Yet another who died for his Lord was St. Bartholomew who we celebrate on the 24th, according to tradition he dies whilst proclaiming the faith in India. I wonder if any of us has such courage, let us pray that we are not put to the test. A charming story, regarding two saints, comes next relating to St Monica and her son St. Augustine of Hippo. Both hailed from North Africa. Around 331 A.D. St. Monica married to a pagan, prayed for years for the conversion of her profligate son who was only interested in worldly pleasures and her prayer was eventually answered in that Augustine was converted and baptised in Milan, became a bishop and one of the greatest theologians of his age. See what prayer can do.

HATHAWAY Finally we can look to two spiritual giants, if we so wish, for inspiration; first St John the Baptist who's beheading we remember on the 29th and Our Lady, the FURNITURE Blessed Virgin Mary who's Assumption into heaven, or if you’re over fussy "The falling asleep of", we celebrate on the 15th. I wonder why we are so relaxed about BESPOKE FURNITURE & JOINERY Elijah going up to heaven but jib at our Lady?

Overall, not too bad for a sleepy month! 01452 857857 God Bless www.hathawayfurniture.co.uk Fr. David

26 11 AROUND THE PARISHES — THE LEIGH COLIN’S COMPUTER COLUMN Downsizing No, I don't mean the topical moving from a home with more bedrooms than needed to somewhere smaller, I mean electronic downsizing of a computer file. Typically, the need is to make good quality photographs electronically small enough for emailing. I've touched on this before, but there are now so many different ways of achieving the desired result, depending on which version of Windows you have (sorry Apple Mac people) that I thought it would be worth revisiting the subject of file compression and highlighting a few general principles. In the old days we used to "zip" text or program files for transmitting by floppy disk. These days, memory size and operating speeds are such that it is hardly necessary to compress text. Pictures, however, take up more memory, so much so that many of the common formats for picture files, like jpg, have their own built-in compression routines. Instead of recording the Invites you to a New Type of Fundraiser precise colour and intensity of every single pixel (picture element) in the millions of pixels in a high resolution photograph of, say, a street scene At St Catherine’s Church, The Leigh including a Routemaster bus, the recording may take clever short cuts along the lines of "treat the next hundred pixels as London Transport red". A (Making use of the new facilities at the church) similar principle is involved in compressing music files - one might say that mp3 is the musical equivalent of jpg. Because such files are already compressed, general file compression routines like "zip" are not going to achieve much. The same is true of video files, the real memory gobblers Come along and join us in a Card Making Workshop So if we want to reduce file size, typically so that we can email the file in a reasonably short time, we need to give up some quality. FEEDBACK

‘The “Exhibition of Imagination” came and went. It was the result Norton, Leigh & District of six months of arrangements with a final long evening of setting up the day before the event, rewarded by the visitors, artists, 66th Horticultural Show judges and Deputy to the Lord lieutenant, Canon Michael Irving attending. VEGETABLES, FRUIT, FLOWERS, WINE, Each piece of art exhibited was inspirational, showing the PRESERVES & CAKES imagination of student and amateur artists is wide and varied, each To be held at with their own techniques and innovative styles. The judges made decisions based on categories of Painting, Photography and NORTON VILLAGE HALL Imagination, for which I am very grateful for their insight. SATURDAY 10 AUGUST 2013 In conclusion, the list is too long to say thank you to everyone Doors open at 2.30pm individually, but thank you to all who have supported me on this endeavour, it has being a great experience.’ Admission 50p (Children Free)
