Contextual analyses of a Mycenaean workshop area in the Late Bronze Age citadel of Tiryns (Argolis, Greece) are presented to investigate the interaction of different artisans under changing socio‐political and economic circumstances. The case study indicates that although certain techno‐ logical practices are often linked to specific crafts, they do not necessarily imply the separation of job tasks related to the working of one specific material versus another. Shared technological prac‐ tices and activities, therefore, may be a factor in shaping cohesive group identities of specialized artisans. Since tracing artisans’ identities is easier said than done on the basis of excavated materials alone, we employ the concepts of multiple chaînes opératoires combined with cross‐craft interactions as a methodology in order to retrieve distinctive sets of both social and technological practices from the archaeological remains. These methodological concepts are not restricted to a specific set of steps in the production cycle, but ideally encompass reconstructing contexts of extraction, manufac‐ ture, distribution and discard/reuse for a range of artefacts. Therefore, these concepts reveal both technological practices, and, by contextualising these technological practices in their spatial layout, equally focus on social contacts that would have taken place during any of these actions. -

Later we will visit the Roman colony of Philippi (Acts 16:12– 40). Paul wrote a letter to its church while in prison. We later stop in Thessaloniki Amphipolis (Acts 17:1) to see the famous lion. ver since Heinrich Schliemann began digging at the ancient Greek site of Mycenae in 1876, generations of archaeologists have worked to uncover the spectacular remains of a Bronze Age superpower that gave its name to a whole civilization. The “Mycenaeans” were not a single people, but disparate groups united by a shared culture that stretched all over Greece and dominated the Aegean in the Late Bronze Age, from about 1600 to 1100 b.c. This was the world of the Trojan War; scholars believe Homer’s E Iliad describes actual events involving Mycenaean city-states around 1200 b.c. For many ancient writers and some modern excavators, Homer’s kings and warriors were based on historical figures who set out for Troy from the citadels that still bear their ancient names—Pylos, Tiryns, Argos, Thebes, and chief among them, Mycenae. Not surprisingly, archaeologists have focused their efforts on uncovering evidence of the elite society ruled by kings, including Agamemnon at Mycenae and Nestor at Pylos. But one energetic young scholar is turning away from the kings and focusing on the regular people of ancient Mycenae. Despite more than a century of excavation at the Mycenaean palace sites, no one has ever excavated a Mycenaean town. Christofilis Maggidis and his team are determined to change that. Lobell Mycenae and other palace sites thought to be similar in sociopolitical organization, can be addressed for the first time. How did trade function outside the strict commercial system regulated by the palace? What was day-to-day social and economic life like? What kind of houses did the Mycenaeans live in and what did they eat? We know that the Mycenaean elite flourished thanks to their control of rich farm- land and ample food supplies, which were protected by rugged mountain ranges. -

Hera and the Formation of Aristocratic Collective Identity: Evidence from the Argive Plain Neta AIoni-Ronen The image of the Greek goddess Hera, with which we are familiar through archaeological evidence and literary sources, raises interesting questions. In Greek mythology, Hera is known primarily as the wife of Zeus. This status shaped Hera’s image and influenced her role in Homeric poetry, which in turn left a permanent impression on classical studies. Scholars tend to pay insuffi cient regard to Hera’s independent role in Greek religion and her autonomous cult in several areas in Greece, focusing instead on Hera as Zeus’ wife, in fact viewing her exclusively in the context of this relationship. Yet Hera’s prominent cult, the fact that her temples are among the most ancient and monumental in Greece, and the gap between her image in Homeric poetry and her independent role in Greek religion, tell against the prevailing views; a réévaluation of Hera’s image is called for. In the following discussion I will use archaeological evidence and literary sources found in the Argive plain, where Hera had an important cult, in an at tempt to formulate a hypothesis that will account for the above-mentioned in congruity. I thus begin not by considering the Homeric literary evidence, but by reconstructing Hera’s role in a relatively well-documented and important local cult. Hera and the Argive Heraion The Argive Heraion, Hera’s most important cult-center in the Greek world, was built between Argos and Mycenae during the 8th and 7th centuries BC on an ancient bronze-age settlement comprising many burial caves from the Myce naean era. -

Unruly or harmonious. Pictures of Greek culture, one after another, are as dazzling as golden florins. Toppled columns, statues, ruins of ancient temples. Agamemnon and Clytemnestra walked these very grounds. Electra waited for Orestes. Today they all come alive in ancient plays performed in the original theatres. Myths inter- twined with customs, stories, and art can be found everywhere from the islands to continental Greece. Mosaics and frescoes. Charms, dreams, fables. Byzantine domes that stare doggedly at the heavens. Surrounded by sea and golden sand. Shady arch- ways, windmills, tall proud towers. The sun scatters its bounty with an open hand. Each picture is taken straight form Greek nature and culture. An old wise crone sits outside her house in the street embroidering. The balcony of another house is strewn with tomatoes left to dry in the sun. The images disappear and pop up again. They keep you company along a path on majestic Mount Athos or in a shadowed arcade of one of its monumen- tal monasteries. Beauty has defined Greece’s cultural course through the ages. Ancient, Byzantine and Modern Greek civiliza- tion has always idealized beauty, which has been a constant in Greek tradition and the warmth of celebrated Greek hospitality. -

Adams HE GRAVE ROBBERS' HOARD known as the Tiryns Treasure in Tcludes two well-preserved and two (?) fragmentary gold-and amber objects which have been fully described but as yet not satisfactorily explained. The hoard was found in December, 1915, in the area of the Mycenaean lower town southeast of the citadel of Tiryns. Karol first thought that it had been buried in Geometric times but later2 changed his view in favor of burial "before the fall of the Mycenaean culture (vor dem Untergang der mykenischen Kultur)." It is now generally accepted that the objects in the hoard range widely within the Late Helladic period.s We are here concerned only with the gold-and-amber objects. Kar04 described them as "a pair of curious, wheel-shaped ornaments of goldwire, the spokes of which are set with amber beads." He added that the hoard yielded sufficient additional gold wire and amber beads to account for a second pair, and suggested that they may have served as "Schlafenschmuck" like the wheels covering the ears of the lady of Elche.5 In his first note, Karo6 supplied a photograph giving an axial view of one "wheel" containing seven amber beads (now Athens National Museum no. 6217b) and a side view of the other (now Athens National Museum no. -
“We Are Woman”: Girl, Maid, Matron in Aegean Art*
“WE ARE WOMAN”: GIRL, MAID, MATRON IN AEGEAN ART* On the Tiryns Treasure ring (Pl. XXXIIIa), a woman sits on a throne, her feet on a footstool, and lifts a chalice to four Tawerets with their usual ewers standing before her; behind her is a bird (probably meant to be an impressive bird, a hawk or eagle). I assume the woman is a goddess: consensus has it that seated women flanked by special animals (like the woman in the upper fresco in Xeste 3, Akrotiri) should be goddesses.1 The presence of the bird is reminiscent of the birds that swoop down on men embracing a boulder (an omphalos) on two gold rings.2 Taweret was a childbirth goddess imported from Egypt where she is a female hippopotamus with sagging breasts, wearing a crocodile on her back. In Crete, she slims down and sometimes has the head of a lion.3 For the Akrotiri goddess (Pl. XXXIIIb), Paul Rehak had pointed out that her youth as well as her maturity are both emphasised (she wears the ankle-length robe of an adult, but her breasts are not fully developed, and her hair combines the loose locks of a maiden with the long tress of an adult). She also wears more jewellery than any other woman in Aegean art.4 That she is flanked by special animals, a blue monkey and a griffin, leashed to the real window as if she and it had just arrived (compare the Archanes ring with circular bezel that shows them in flight),5 and that she is surrounded by girls in a mountainous setting — all may identify her as Artemis.6 The Tiryns ring also combines a depiction of the sun and a crescent moon above what I have termed a “heaven line”7 that also includes asterisms (stars, shooting stars, or comets) or wheat ears. -
