Sports registration for BOTH SUMMER AND WINTER CODES will be completed on the following days for each year level:  Years 10 to 13 By Tuesday 26 January Online—Email with link sent  Year 9 Monday 1 February Manually—On orientation day A stand will be set up in the Hall on 26 January for Yr 11-13 students who have registration questions and Sports Uniform Order forms. Year 9 students must bring in the coloured Registration forms and Uniform Order form (received by post), on 1 February. All forms including the sports contract must be completed and signed by students and their parents. Students should bring their Sports Uniform Order Form also. Sports fees will be added to student accounts following registration and can be paid once they appear on your statement. Accounts can be viewed online through the Parent Portal and a statement will be emailed to parents.

Final dates for sports fee payments are below and are based on the final dates the school has for registering teams with College Sport Wellington: Summer codes 11 February 2016 Winter codes 02 May 2016

Daily Information The Sports Notice Board, situated outside the Sports Office window (link foyer area), contains information about draws, results, team lists, future sports events and opportunities, cancellations and defaults. Students should check the notice board regularly as it is their responsibility to stay informed. In addition the daily notices are available on notice boards around the school and are placed on the school website at around 3pm each day for the next day. Parents can access these through the Parent Portal.

Sporting Achievements During the course of the year there are a number of occasions where the school recognises and ap- plauds the sporting achievements of its students. This applies equally to all sporting codes. The Physical Education and Sports Departments often hear of such success but there are some students who reach representative status outside of the co-curricular sports programme that we aren’t aware of. Please tell us about these achievements by emailing the sports office [email protected] Type ‘STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT’ in the subject line. Please also note the Important Dates at the end of this booklet which include the Onslow Col- lege Sports Awards and College Sport Wellington SPOTY Awards.

Fees and Payment Plans All Sports Fees include a $10 non-refundable registration/admin fee. Once an account is received, please ensure payment is made by the due dates (Summer Fees – 11 February; Winter Fees—2 May). Registration fees assist with the cost of equipment, uniform replacement, first aid, competition entry fees, compulsory officials fees, turf and facility hire charges, photocopying, reimbursement of coach/ manager expenses, use of facilities and facility upkeep, some transport costs and administration. Additionally, students involved in exchanges and tournaments will pay associated fees and should expect to be involved in fundraising activities to help reduce the costs of these tournaments to families. Please contact the school office if you need to discuss a payment plan or use the Payment Plan form in this booklet which can be returned to the sports office on the first day of school or soon after. Students are asked to think carefully about each sport and the level of commitment that will be required of them. NO REFUNDS will be given after the first week of a sports season unless there are extenuating circumstances. Application for refund should be made to the Sports Office in writing.

Communication The Sports Office is open from 9.00am to 3.30pm including interval and lunchtime most days. Stu- dents are encouraged to discuss any sports issues (such as defaults and deferrals) in a timely manner as they have a responsibility to their own team members, the teams they compete against, and the competition organisers. Late advice of defaulted games incur a charge from tournament providers which must be paid by the team concerned before the following week of play.

Sports Tournaments Teams or individuals may compete in various North Island or National Secondary Schools Tourna- ments or other events throughout the year. The two main tournament dates are: 4-8 April 2016 Summer Tournament Week 27 August – 3 September 2016 Winter Tournament Week. Senior teams participating in these tournaments will be selected depending upon their level of achievement in local competition and on the expectation that they could gain selection to a national competition. If selected in more than one top team, students may only represent one code during Tournament Week. Team coaches and the Director of Sport must be advised of their decision by 19 May 2016. This may require the student stepping down from one team in order to allow the tournament team to train together. NOTE: To participate in either of these tournaments, students will be required to pay extra costs for travel, accommodation, food and entry fees, these must be paid before the tournament commences or the student will be unable to attend. It is expected that students will be involved in fundraising.

Junior Triangular Exchange

Onslow competes in an annual exchange with Tawa and Newlands Colleges for the McDonald’s Cup. Junior teams (Year 9 and 10), are chosen for this event in the following codes: Football, Bas- ketball, Netball, Rugby, Cross Country, Hockey (6-aside) and Badminton. The exchange is hosted by Onslow College every third year. The exchange will take place on Thursday 12 May with a postponement date of Wednesday 18 May. Parents are welcome to attend the exchange which will be hosted by Onslow College in 2016.

Fair Play

Onslow College abides by the rules of Fair Play. Payment of Accounts

Summer sport fees will be added to student accounts following registration and can be paid once they appear on your statement. Accounts can be viewed online through the Parent Por- tal and a statement will be emailed to parents. Final dates for sports fee payments are below and are based on the final dates the school has for registering teams with College Sport Wellington:

These codes can be found on the Year 9 sports registration form i.e. 01 Bowls, 16 Orienteering etc., and in this document.  By credit card via the Parent Portal accessed from the school website. Parents of Year 9 students will be invited to join the portal in early January.

Coaches and Managers

Teams will not be entered into competition without a Coach and a Manager. We are very grateful to all our volunteers as without them we would be unable to provide the sporting opportunities that our students enjoy so much. With around 160 teams at Onslow College each year it is vital that we have parental and community involvement in coaching and managing teams. The Coach/Manager/Officials Registration & Contact Form in this document should be completed if you are available to assist with our sports programme. Please complete and return it to the Sports Office or scan and email to [email protected] Alternatively, contact with our Sports Office would be welcomed. Senior coaching positions can be applied for by sending your contact and qualification details by email to the Sports Office [email protected] Please include an outline of the skills you be- lieve you could bring to the position and any relevant references. Your past experience and preferred coaching style should be included in your application. NOTE: All coaches and managers will be asked to complete a Police Vetting Form. WELCOME and THANK YOU There will be a ‘Welcome’ event (drinks and nibbles) and a short meeting on Wednesday 23 March at 7.30pm in the Student Centre at Onslow College. This is an opportunity to meet with other sports officials, complete Police vetting forms and receive our Coaches, Managers and Officials Handbook and have your questions answered. A ‘Thank you’ social event for coaches, managers and officials who have supported the Sports Department throughout the year will be held on Thursday 24 November 2016.

Sports Team Photographs All sports teams will have the opportunity to have a team photograph taken on Tuesday 2 August 2016. The success of this opportunity relies on all team members being available, on time and dressed in their team uniform. Term 1 summer sport teams will need to arrange for uniform to be available on the day if they have loaned uniforms from the Sports Office. Coaches, managers and team officials are welcome to join students for the photographs and a schedule will be available on the school website ahead of the event. Photographs will be made available online in full resolution for all sports students to access with a username and password which will be issued by the school. Payment is covered by your sports fees, however hardcopy prints may be ordered directly from the photographers website at an additional cost OR an image file downloaded and taken to a local lab for processing. Students and their parents will be able to save images on their phone, pc or other device. Images can be shared without infringing copyright.

Uniform Requirements Uniform requirements are kept to a minimum but in all cases the uniform is non-negotiable and must be adhered to. Wearing sports uniform is a requirement of the sports bodies who provide the competitions our teams enter i.e. College Sport Wellington, Wellington Hockey Association and Welling- ton Netball Centre. Onslow College’s official sports colours are green and red.

All students in the school’s premier teams and teams that travel to Summer and Winter Tourna- ments, are required to wear the school tracksuit to all competitions. Tracksuits can be purchased from the Sports Office.

Uniforms provided by Onslow College will be signed out to students at the time of issue. An annual loan fee of $20 per item will be charged to the student’s account.

Uniform that is not returned will be charged to the student’s account at $150 per item. Uni- forms will be collected at the end of the season by coaches/managers or can be returned to the Sports Office in a bag with your name, form class and sports code written on a piece of paper inside. Please make an effort to return uniform following the last week of your playing season as it may be required for teams entering the next season of sport.

The timely return of uniform will help keep sports fees down. All hired uniform is expected to be returned in a clean and tidy condition. Damage of uniforms should be advised to the Sports Office as soon as possible after it happens. Uniforms not provided by the school can, in most cases, be purchased from the Sports office. A price list for sports uniform is at the back of this information booklet. Payments should be made to the school office and the receipt brought to the Sports Office where the order will be filled. Uniform items cannot be charged to student accounts.

Details of the uniform items required to be purchased for each code are included with the individual code information on the following pages. All attempts are being made to standardise the uniform to our new ‘Koru’ design and to limit the number of items you will need to purchase. Any items you purchase should be able to be used for several years and several sports codes and PE classes.

Sports Uniform and Equipment General Information and Guidelines For All Teams and Team Management

¨ All Onslow College sports uniform and apparel must be approved by the Sports Office. ¨ The use of the Onslow College name and logo on sports uniform and apparel must be approved by the Sports Director. ¨ Any proposed changes or additions to the Sports uniform of any code should be made in writing, via the Code Convenor, to the Sports Office. Proposals should detail any changes/ improvements to the current strip, reasons for the proposed changes, costs/funding etc. ¨ Any grant applications for sports uniform or equipment must be made through the Sports Office and be approved by the School Executive. ¨ Orders for new sports uniform or equipment must be made by the Sports Office or after obtaining approval and an order number from the Sports Office. ¨ All sports uniform and gear loaned to teams or individuals by Onslow College is to be signed for at the time of issue. All uniform and gear supplied by Onslow College should be returned in a timely manner at the conclusion of the season. Damaged items are to be notified to the Sports Office promptly. Items missing, lost or damaged at the end of the season will be charged to the individual student responsible for it. Team bag and equipment is the responsibility of the team coach and manager. Ownership of Onslow sports uniform (including clothing, gear bags, balls, first aid and any other items supplied as part of a particular sport) remains with the School except in the following cases: Netball uniform purchased by students Rugby shorts purchased by students Tracksuits purchased by students Other approved sports uniform purchased by students

Information for Students and Parents YEAR 9—Registration is manual using the forms mailed to you. These must be completed and returned to Onslow College on the 1st day of school. Peer supporters will take you through the registration process during orientation  Draw up a weekly timetable that indicates when you have time available for extra activities. Bear in mind your workload, any commitments outside school and extra responsibili- ties you may have.  Remember that you will be able to choose more than one sport per season. Consider the dates for these sports carefully. Some sports last all year; others are for a short time only.  Choose the sports that you want to participate in. Tick them on the Sports Registration Form and work out the costs involved. Complete the Payment Plan Form if necessary. Check your Parents / Caregivers are happy with this.  Parents / Caregivers and students need to sign the Sports Contract on the back of both the Summer and Winter Sports Registration Forms .  Parents / Caregivers or family members should complete the Coaches / Managers / Offi- cials Registration & Contact Form if you are able to help with a sports team in any way. It is important we have your details correct so we can get the right information to you in a timely manner. Volunteers will be contacted by a Code Convenor prior to the season and will be issued with a handbook. Coaches / Managers will also be asked to complete a Po- lice Vetting Form. Both competitive and recreational teams will not be entered into competition without a coach and / or manager. Please see the Important Dates page at the back of this booklet for coach/manager/official meeting dates in March.  Complete the Sports Uniforms Order Form if required. If you are unsure of anything, check with Sports Office before registering so that you know exactly what you have committed yourself to. [email protected] YEAR 10-13—Registration must be completed online by 26 January. You will receive an email with the link to complete this in early January. Sports Department staff will answer your questions or issues on Course Confirmation day if you have any. NB: REGISTRATION FOR ANY SPORT WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED IF THERE ARE OUTSTANDING FEES OR UNIFORM FROM PREVIOUS YEARS. Summer Sport will commerce in the week beginning 9 February 2016. Teams compete in Term 1 for 7 weeks of competition, with some teams continuing to compete for a further 7 weeks in Term 4. The fees listed in the Summer section of the Sports Registration Form are the total cost for Term 1 & 4 unless stated otherwise. In some instances it is possible to join a sport in Term 4. Please check that your commitment is for BOTH Term 1 & 4 as NO REFUNDS will be given.

Winter Sport will commerce from 2 May 2016 and continue until the end of August. Students must understand their commitment to the whole season and the responsibility they have to the team they join. It is vital that parents support this and encourage students to see this through.

Equipment/Uniform: All students participating in Onslow College sports are required to purchase their own sports top from the Sports Department. Sports tops are to be worn for all sporting activities. Onslow Shorts are available also but are optional. Students are required to bring their own shorts (if they don't have Onslow ones) and sports shoes. All equipment will be provided.

Cost: Between $10 - $15 per Sport. Charged to your school account. Uniform: Boys and Girls tops $55 Boys and Girls shorts $50 (optional)

Parent Help: Every outing requires parent help with transport and supervision to keep costs down. We would be very grateful for your help.

Please note the times and dates are subject to change. These will be confirmed at the start of the school year.

Parents will be emailed a letter prior to each sporting activity inviting children to attend. You are required to promptly return the permission slip or reply via email accepting or declining.

31 ATHLETICS CODE CONVENOR: PETER CHAPMAN Training: Personal Programme Competition and Venues: It is compulsory for all Year 9 and 10 students to be involved in the School Athletics Day. Students from other year levels are strongly encouraged to take part in this event also. Athletics day will be held at Onslow College on the top field on Wednesday 24 February. The School Athletics team will be selected from these results. Members of this team will participate in the Western Zone Athletics on 9 March at Newtown Park.

AWD students have their own selection meet at Newtown Park on 24 February.

Selected athletes will then participate in the Regional Championships on 16 March. The Wellington Secondary Schools Team will be selected to compete in the North Island Championships, 1-3 April in Auckland, following the Regional Champs.

The National Championships will be held At Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland on 2-4 December and are open to all interested athletes who meet the entry standards.

Uniform: Onslow College ‘Koru’ singlets will be issued to the school athletics team for the event only. Students who expect to represent the school on an on going basis should purchase a singlet or t-shirt from the Sports Office. The Uniform Order form can be found later in this document.

Cost: $10 admin. Plus entry fees, travel and accommodation for away events. Entry fees charged to your account must be paid before attending any event.

Parent Help Required: Students will travel by bus to local events and be supervised by staff. Students who attend NI and National events will need to make their own arrangements for travel and accommodation. Entries can only be made online through the Sports Office so early advice of your desire to enter would be appreciated.

Competition: Thursdays 4-5pm at Johnsonville or Tawa Bowling Clubs. CSW Bowls Pairs Champs - 26 Feb CSW Bowls Singles Champs - 18 March CSW Jun Tournament—29 Nov Uniform: Onslow ‘Koru’ T-shirt and shorts to be purchased from the Sports Office. Cost: $20.00 plus entry costs for championships. Parent Help Required: Transport and supervision is required to and from all venues. Please indicate your availability on the Coaches/Managers/Officials Registration & Contact Form attached. NB: For Indoor bowls see Page 37. 02 CROQUET CODE CONVENOR: ELIZABETH WARREN Facilitated by Khandallah Croquet Club (KCC) students are coached/managed by Roger Hurnard at KCC. Parental support with transport is always appreciated for away fixtures. Sessions run throughout Term 1 and 4. Teams are structured in Pairs. Students are welcome to join the KCC at any time and play year round.

Training: Thursday afternoons in Term 1 from 11 Feb onwards. 3.30-5pm

Competition: Played early in Term 1 at KCC in Woodmancote Rd, Khandallah. CSW hold Regional Champs (19-20 March) ahead of the NZSS competition in Nelson on 2-3 April.

Uniform: There is no requirement for a uniform during the season but Regional and National teams will be provided with Onslow College tops for these competitions.

Cost: Sessions $2 each charged to your school account each term. PLUS $10 School admin and photograph fee

03 CRICKET CODE CONVENOR: MITCH NEILSON Cricket at Onslow College is going from strength to strength and is backed by a committee of parents, coaches and local individuals, as well as the Johnsonville CC and Onslow CC and Welling- ton Cricket. The Onslow 1st XI currently plays in the top division (College Premier Youth) with 2nd and 3rd XI’s in Premier 3 and 4. Year 9 (Junior) and Year 10 (Intermediate) teams also compete in the top 2 di- visions for their age grade. Year 9 students are required to register with the Sports Office by 20 January (email your name, previous team and club and preferred position to [email protected]). You will then be contacted by a committee member and advised of the training/trial dates for your age group. Training: We are privileged to have an onsite high standard indoor cricket training facility (Farnboro Centre) providing all weather training conditions. Our bottom field grass wicket was rebuilt in early 2014 and a further grass wicket and artificial wicket are located on the top fields of the school. Training begins in early to mid January as advised by coaches/managers. Development: Additional professional coaching is offered to students at various levels and Onslow College is working closely with local clubs to bring in extra coaching resources on a regular basis. Equipment: Some team equipment is available however most students prefer to provide their own bat, pads and gloves. Balls are provided. Competition: Male students play a mix of 50 over, 40 over and T20 games depending on their division. Most games are played on Saturdays, though some take place on Sundays, often due to weather conditions. There is a mixture of home and away games. The season begins as below: 30 Jan - Prem 1 and 2 6 Feb - Prem 3 and 4, Intermediate, Junior Female students compete on Thursday 4-7pm during the season. Girl’s cricket is undergoing some development at the moment with the aim of providing a more lively and fast paced game. The cricket committee has a stated aim of developing girl’s cricket at Onslow and welcomes enquiry from interested students and coaches.

Uniform: Most teams now wear coloured uniform which is supplied by the school unless ad vised by your coaches in which case students supply their own whites. Traveling and training tops, cap and tracksuit must also be purchased and are available through the team coach at a reasonable cost. 1st XI players will need to purchase a team blazer.

Cost: Fees vary depending on the division students play in: 1st XI - $295.00 2nd XI - $225.00 3rd XI - $180.00 Year 10 - $180.00 Year 9 - $180.00

Annual Prizegiving and Alumni Day games—4 December 2016

Parent Help Required: Parents are welcome to join the committee who meet regularly during the season and are involved in fundraising for cricket activities as well as setting the strategic direction for this sport at Onslow College. We are always interested in parents who wish to coach, either now or in the future and would welcome any discussion on what you have to offer. Please indicate your interest on the Coaches/Managers/Officials Registration & Contact Form at the back of this booklet. Parents are also required to help with transport to and from games.

04 FUTSAL CODE CONVENOR: DAVID ANASTASI Onslow College has performed extremely well at Futsal competitions in the past. However, we are often short of coaches without whom entry in the Term 1 competition may not be possible. Please see the Important Dates document available at http://www.onslow.school.nz/current- students/sports/sporting-codes for pre-season trials/meetings. All students should attend these. Competitions are provided by both College Sport and Futsal Wellington.

Training: Monday evening in the school Gym or on the school Astroturf.

Equipment: Balls are provided.

Competition: Term 1: Seniors - Wednesdays at ASB centre; Juniors -Fridays at ASB Centre. Subsequent competitions will be entered if we have enough interest and coaching staff and will attract additional fees. Re registration will be required for Term 4 competition.

Events: 19 March—CSW Futsal Champs—ASB Sports Centre 5-8 April—NZSS Futsal Champs—ASB Sports Centre Onslow College will take senior and junior boys’ teams and a girls’ team to this event based on student commitment. Additional fees apply for entry.

Uniform: Provided by Onslow College. A hire fee of $20 will be charged to your Student account.

Cost: Per league (term) —Juniors $50.00, Seniors and Jun Prem players $70.00

Parent help required: We need coaches, managers, referees and transport/supervision for Futsal players. Please indicate your availability on the Coaches/Managers/ Officials Registration & Contact Form. Teams cannot be entered in competition without at least a manager who must attend games. Transport to the ASB Sports Centre is always required.

05 GOLF CODE CONVENOR: MAIRI ARCHER Inter-school Golf is not suitable for beginners – students need to be able to play to a reasonable standard and be able to keep an accurate score card. They will need to have a registered handicap to compete in the Regional CSW Championships. Training: Own programme Equipment: Own clubs and equipment Competition: Monday in Terms 1 and 4. Four person teams. Uniform: Onslow College Polo shirt or ‘Koru’ design t-shirt to be purchased from the Sports Office. Cost: $20.00 team/league fee plus $5 entry fee if entering the CSW Individual Champs. Parent Help Required: Students need to be transported to and from games. A parent will need to be present to supervise. It works well if parents take turns with this responsibility.

11 HANDBALL CODE CONVENOR: KEVIN CAMPBELL Handball is an exciting team sport in which two teams of seven players each (six outfield players and a goalkeeper) pass a ball using their hands with the aim of throwing it into the goal of the other team. A standard match consists of two halves, and the team that scores more goals wins. Goals must be scored by throwing the ball from outside the zone or while "jumping" into it. The game is quite fast and includes body contact, as the defenders try to stop the attackers from approaching the goal. Handball has been an Olympic sport since 1972.

Onslow College is wanting to enter both Girls and Boys teams into CSW competition in 2016.

Training: At Onslow College. Time TBC with coach. Equipment: Balls are provided. Students must wear non-marking indoor sports shoes. Competition: Boys—Wednesday in Terms 1 at ASB Sports Centre. Girls—Friday in Terms 1 at ASB Sports Centre. Entry in Term 4 is for Juniors only and will be based on student commitment. Uniform: Numbered team uniform will be provided. Cost: $70.00 per league (term) plus additional entry fee if entering the National Champs. Parent Help Required: Students need to be transported to and from games. A parent will need to be present to supervise. It works well if parents take turns with this responsibility. Team managers will also be required.

06 ROWING CODE CONVENOR: TINA MANKER Rowing requires a significant commitment from both students and the large group of parents and community members who have put in many hours over many years to develop the programme at Onslow College. As a consequence Onslow has enjoyed some excellent results in this sport. The Onslow College Rowing Club is run in association with the College and the Wellington Rowing Club. Fees are paid directly to the club and students row for the club for most of the season. There are several Secondary School regattas in February and March where students row for Onslow Col- lege such as the Maadi Cup (NZSS Rowing Champs). The season begins with a Learn to Row camp in September to identify students with the right drive and potential and continues over the summer holidays until March of the following year. Rowing requires huge time commitment (up to 10 trainings a week near the end of the season) so it is unreasonable to expect that you will be able to play another sport during Term 4 and Term 1 of the following year if you choose to row. It is also an expensive sport and fundraising opportunities are provided to assist students and their families. A full information evening in July will provide students and parents with a comprehensive picture of what is involved. Trainings: Onslow College, Wellington Rowing Club, Frank Kitts Park Lagoon and other venues Venues: Wellington Harbour, Wanganui River, Lake Horowhenua, Lake Karapiro etc Uniform: Full information will be given at the pre-season meeting. Costs: Charged on a per event basis. Costs vary and will be advised when details for each event are confirmed. Students chosen as novice rowers after the ‘Learn to Row’ camp should expect costs of around $3000—$3500 for the following season. $10.00 Administration fee will be charged to your account once squads are con firmed in September. The fee includes professional sports photographs on 2 Aug following the season. Parent help required: Rowing is very much a family affair with everyone expected to pitch in and help. 07 TENNIS CODE CONVENOR: CUSHLA THOMSON Interschool Tennis is not for beginners – students need to be able to play to a reasonable standard and to score their own games. Teams must have a manager who travels with them or they will not be placed in the competition.

In 2016 CSW will be trialling A NEW MODEL for College Tennis For all CSW Tennis competitions, a tie or match between schools will consist of 3 matches – 2 singles and 1 doubles. This effectively means that a team can be entered with between 2 and 4 players. If 2 players - each plays a singles then a doubles If 3 players - 2 each play a singles and one combines with the 3rd to play doubles If 4 players - then 2 play singles and the other 2 play the doubles. The Regional Premier competitions will have the great majority of ties, if not all, played at Ten- nis Central HQ (Renouf Centre) between 6.00pm and 8.00pm on Tuesday evenings; 10 Feb- ruary-22 March. We have the capacity to use lights if necessary. The Renouf Centre will therefore become the Premier grade hub bringing all teams together each week. 07A TENNIS—NOVICE COACHING In order to develop Tennis at Onslow we provide Novice Tennis Coaching for students who would like to learn basic strokes and techniques, court position and scoring, with a view to entering competition the following year. Coaching by a tennis professional happens at Onslow during lunchtime on Tuesdays in Term 1 2016. We may add another day if registration numbers are good.

Cost: $60.00 for Term 1 (8 lessons). Fees for Term 4 will be advised later in the year based on interest. Equipment: Players will need to supply their own racquets. Tennis balls are supplied. 08 TOUCH CODE CONVENOR: REGAN O’NEILL All Touch teams require a coach or we will be unable to enter teams in the competition. It is prefera- ble that teams also have a manager who can help with the organisation of transport to Fraser or Wakefield Parks. Seniors play for 3 weeks in Term 1 at Fraser Park Lower Hutt. Juniors play for 3 weeks in Term 1 and a further 3 weeks in Term 4 at Wakefield Park, Berhampore. Teams play two half hour games per night. Training: One session per week, timing decided in conjunction with the team Coach. 09 VOLLEYBALL CODE CONVENOR: MEGAN WILLIS Games are played at school gyms around the Wellington/Kapiti area. Students are encouraged to learn to umpire and courses are provided for this purpose. Students should register their interest with the sports office. EACH TEAM MUST PROVIDE THEIR OWN UMPIRE. Training: Monday and Friday lunchtimes in the Gym . Other times by request from coaches. Equipment: Balls provided Competition: Juniors (Year 9-10) Wednesday from 4pm Term 1: 17 February – 30 March Term 4: 12 October – 30 November 11-12 November – Junior Tournament, ASB Sports Centre Seniors (Year 11-13) Fridays from 4pm Term 1: 12 February – 24 March Term 4: 16 September – 11 November 8-9 March – Senior Tournament, ASB Sports Centre Uniform: Teams will be provided with numbered ‘Koru’ tops. Students in these teams will need to purchase the ‘Koru’ shorts or black bike shorts. Cost: $ 40.00 plus uniform hire fee of $20. Parent Help Required: All teams need a manager to supervise the teams at the playing venue or teams will not be entered in the competition. Transport is needed for all away games including the Kapiti Coast and is the responsibility of students and parents. 10 YACHTING / SAILING CODE CONVENOR: PHIL WILLIAMS (TRIYA ) Students register with the School and we forward details to the TRIYA convenor. Information about training, equipment and the competition will be provided by the TRIYA coaches. Training: Thursdays 4-7pm at Evans Bay Uniform: The team will decide together which of the Onslow uniform items are most suitable for competition. This can then be purchased from the Sports Office. Cost: $10 admin and photograph fee will be charged to your school account. $160 per term. Payable to TRIYA. Parent help required: There are always jobs for involved parents and the coach will discuss their needs with parents as required. Transport to and from Evans Bay will be needed.

12 ADVENTURE RACING (All year) CODE CONVENOR: HAMISH MCWILLIAM There are several events during the year for both juniors (Get2Go Challenge) and seniors (Hillary Challenge) as well as other events for all ages (Go412 and Big Bang). Races all involve outdoor challenges and adventure sports including navigation, kayaking, climbing, mountain biking. Some also include tramping and rafting.

Get2Go is an adventure racing competition for Year 9 and 10 students that requires teams of eight to work together to complete challenges based on mountain biking, kayaking, rock climbing and rogain (orienteering).

Training takes place during the winter terms and is based on developing cohesive, supportive teams as well as technical ability. For many students it is their first introduction to mountain biking, rock climbing, kayaking and orienteering – it is also great fun.

Training: Training days to be arranged with the team members. Equipment: Students require a mountain bike and helmet and fair degree of willingness to try anything challenging in the outdoors (e.g. high ropes).

Competition: April - Go412 July - Hillary Challenge Qualifier (Taupo ) September - Get2Go Challenge (local event) November - Big Bang (Otaki overnight event)

The final of the Get2Go and the Hillary Challenge are restricted to top teams only and are both one week events at OPC - Hillary Challenge in May the following year, Get2Go in December. Onslow College has qualified for both these events in the past and for the last 2 years took a junior team of 8 to the National Championships on Great Barrier Island.

Uniform: Onslow College ‘Koru’ singlet or t-shirt to be purchased from the Sports Office, plus outdoor equipment such as tramping packs, running shoes, sleeping bag, waterproofs.

13 CANOE POLO CODE CONVENOR: KATHIE STOBBS Canoe Polo is played in a pool with 5-aside teams (plus subs) competing for possession, passing, blocking, tackling and scoring under suspended goals. All age groups compete in an environment where skills dominate strength. Safety is paramount and adult supervision is guaranteed. Training: Will be discussed with players and agreed upon. Equipment: All gear is provided Competition: Monday - Open league Wednesday - Learn to Play Friday - School league Cost: $10.00 administration fee and team photograph. Further event fees are charged on a per event basis to your school account. Parent Help Required: Supervision is required at the pool on game nights. Students will also require transportation to and from the venue.

14 CHEERLEADING CODE CONVENOR: MAIRI ARCHER Cheerleading is offered at Onslow College in conjunction with BigAir Gym. In 2015 the group performed for the first time and medalled. The team at BigAir are very positive about the future of this group and would welcome newcomers whether or not you have any experience. Take a look at their picture on the front page of this document.

Training: 8.15 Tuesday morning At Onslow College in the Rec centre and possibly one lunch hour also. There are additional opportunities to train at the BigAir Gym in Tawa. Competition: Cheer and Dance Nationals—Term 3 Other competitions during the year will be considered for students at a suitable level. Uniform: Students should wear suitable stretch clothing for trainings. Competition uniform will be discussed by the team. Cost: $60.00 Per term. Paid to the School. 15 CYCLING / MOUNTAIN BIKING (All year)

Local competition is advised to students on the Sports Notice Boards in the link foyer. College Sport Wellington offer regional championships for both Mountain Biking and Cycling and students can qualify for North Island and New Zealand Championships. There are many other events run by PNP and other external providers.

Cycling: Onslow does not offer training for cycling however, if students are interested they should register with the sports office and we will be happy to support a team.

MOUNTAIN BIKING MTB CODE CONVENOR: MAL BULL

This is a fantastic and challenging sport with a very enthusiastic and growing group of mountainbik- ers and a dedicated Coach. In 2015 Onslow College won the CSW regional competition and the PNP SS Series. We are looking to expand and would welcome both boys and girls into this fun sport. Training: Training is undertaken at the school grounds and elsewhere around the Wellington area with convenor Mal Bull. Students are advised of weekly events and often attend and compete as a group. It is not compulsory to attend all events offered. Kiwi Velo staff have kindly offered to run maintenance sessions etc. in 2016—Watch this space for more information! Equipment: Students need their own mountainbike and helmet. Competition: Various but we usually follow the PNP Series. 13 March—CSW Championships—Wainuiomata 5-6 March—North Island Champs, Auckland Cost: $10.00 administration fee and team photograph. Minimal entry fees per event. Parent help required: Transportation of bikes to events and onsite support.

16 ORIENTEERING (All year) CODE CONVENOR: PAUL TEESDALE-SPITTLE Orienteering combines running with navigational challenge. Courses are set for all levels of experience. Beginners' courses have simple navigation, generally using tracks. More advances courses require runners to make decisions about how to navigate quickly and accurately around an off track course. Orienteering at its top level is a fast and physical sport, but is just as enjoyable at a more sedate pace. Some team members will run every event fast and hard, others will walk around the course, enjoying the time outside and the challenge of navigating accurately.

Competition: 21 Feb—22 May. Events run all through the year and are generally held on Sunday mornings, usually starting after 11 am. They are put on by the local orienteering clubs, and include a College Sport Wellington series during the first term. Events are held around parks, reserves, regional parks and local farmland and forests. Training sessions are held on most weekends without a local event. Coaching will be coordinated by Paul Teesdale-Spittle, who has coached the team since 2008, assisted by past Onslow team members and supported by team parents. In addition to weekly events, the team may attend the North Island Secondary School Championships (28-30 April in Hastings and the National Secondary School Championships (21-23 July in Cambridge). There are opportunities for the runners to get into the New Zealand Schools team for annual tests against Australia.

Equipment/Uniform: Whilst there is specialised orienteering gear, newcomers need nothing more than an Onslow College sports top (Koru deign singlet or t-shirt) and a pair of trainers, ideally one with good trail grip.

Cost: $10.00 admin fee (includes team sports photo) plus there is a charge for each event, typically between $5 and $12 to cover the cost of map printing and the event timing equipment.

17 SHOOTING Ngaio Rifle Club 'Learn to Shoot’ program

Onslow College collects student registrations and passes them on to the Club Parents can expect to be contacted by a Club Rep in late March 2016. 'Learn To Shoot' (LTS) is an introduction program for Onslow students to small-bore target shooting. LTS lets students try this challenging sport for 4 weeks. In this period basic target shooting skills and range safety will be learned. The 4 week program costs $50.00, this includes ammunition, the use of hearing protection and any other equipment that is needed in this LTS program. This fee is payable to the Club. This LTS program runs from the end of February on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 3.3pm to 5pm (numbers are limited for each afternoon). NRC range is located at 21a Cashmere Ave, Khandallah (Gray building east of the railway station) At the end of LTS students well be invited to join NRC and progress their skills and performance. We attend national events throughout the year and encourage our members to be involved at the highest levels in this amazing sport. Parent help required: As requested by Ngaio Rifle Club.

18 ULTIMATE FRISBEE CODE CONVENOR: DANIEL DAVIS Ultimate is a dynamic, exciting and competitive team sport using a Frisbee. Often described as a cross between American football and netball, Ultimate is a non-contact sport played in mixed gender teams. It is unique in that it is self-refereed, even at the highest level of competition. Ultimate Fris- bee has become very popular at Onslow College and is supported by a dedicated School Convenor and Wellington Disc Sports.

Training: Depending on the league day, training is likely to be Wednesday or Thursday at Onslow College. Equipment: Suitable footwear –sneaker/touch shoes/football cleats (Outdoor), sneakers/ court/basketball shoes (Indoors). 20 BADMINTON CODE CONVENOR: PAUL LEITCH

Badminton is played on both a competitive and social level and is for all year levels. Teams consist of up to six players and at least four must attend every match as four singles and two doubles games are played. Inter-school competition matches are played after school on Friday for Seniors and Thursday after school for Juniors during Terms 2 and 3. There are several grades for both boys and girls to enter from beginners upwards. Trials will be held at the end of Term 1 to select competitive teams. Students can also enter the Wellington Secondary Schools Championships in singles or doubles.

Training: Two lunchtime sessions

Competition: Seniors - Fridays from 3:30 – 5:30pm at various schools Juniors - Thursdays from 3:30 – 5:30pm at various schools in Northern region.

21 BASKETBALL CODE CONVENORS: MAIRI ARCHER (SENIOR BOYS) KEVIN JOHNSON (GIRLS & JUNIOR BOYS) CSW: The College Sport Wellington League is played in the gyms of participating schools with the Premier Division and Division 1 games played at the ASB Stadium in Kilbirnie. Trials are held in Term 1 for both Junior and Senior players. Students will be placed in a team the selectors consider suitable to their ability and those teams will then be registered in a suitable grade in the competition. In 2015 Onslow had 11 teams competing from Premier Division through to social leagues and catered for students of all abilities. Teams are announced inTerm 1. WBA: In 2016, social teams entered in the WBA league will only be considered for Year 13 students. Social teams must provide their own coach/manager. Fees for this league must be paid in advance before a team will be registered. Please approach the Director of Sport well in advance of the season if you have a group interested in the WBA league.

Training: All teams train on Sunday. Some teams will have a second training during the week.

Competition: Juniors - Tuesday nights, games generally start at 5.00pm or 6.30pm. Finals 23/8. Seniors - Friday nights, games generally start at 6.00pm or 7.30pm. Finals 26/8.

Uniforms: Each player will be loaned a uniform (singlet and shorts). They will need to provide their own socks and footwear. Players must return the uniform in a satisfac tory condition at the end of the season or be charged for replacement ($300).

Referees: Every team must have a dedicated referee to enter the competition. Training courses and mentoring will be offered to any student or parent wishing to help referee in future. Referees are transported to games and paid. From 2016 we will require student referees to attend Zone tournaments in August.

Cost: $125 Senior A teams playing in CSW Premier Division or Division 1. $95.00 All other teams. Includes Sports Photo NB: Players who are selected in the Zone or National tournaments will incur further fees and uniform costs (tracksuit) and should expect to be involved in fundraising to help with these costs. $115 WBA teams Parent Help: Each team requires a coach, manager and referee to take part in this sport. In addition, transport is required to all away games. Please indicate what assistance you can offer by completing the Coaches/Managers/Officials Registration & Contact Form at the back of this booklet. In addition to the College Sport Wellington competition, the Junior A Boys and Girls teams play in a triangular tournament with Newlands and Tawa Colleges. The Senior A and Junior A teams may be considered to compete in the Secondary Schools Zone Tournament in Aug/September which is held in the lower North Island. Senior teams who qualify may attend Nationals in Palmerston North in late September.

22 CROSS COUNRTY / ROAD RUNNING CODE CONVENOR: MAIRI ARCHER Distance athletes are encouraged to participate in Cross Country competition (Term 2) and Road Racing (Term 3). Training: Own training programme. School trainings can be organised if requested.

Competition: Includes races for individuals and teams at local, regional and national levels. Team events are based on three and six person teams in specific age groups. 1 June— CSW Cross Country Champs, Trentham 10 Aug— CSW Road Race Champs, CIT Venues: Various around the greater Wellington area. Uniform: Own Black Shorts, Athletic singlet provided or may be purchased from the Sports Office. Onslow tracksuit for regional and National events. Cost: $10.00 Admin fee plus entry and transport fees per event. Own travel and accommodation if needed. Parent help required: Parents can help by providing transport and supervision at events. The school is required to provide officials at each event also and needs parents to help with these roles.

23 FOOTBALL OCFC PRESIDENT: PAUL LEITCH

Onslow College Football Club (OCFC) was created in 2012 to create a top quality Football environment within the College for players of both sexes, all ages and all skill levels. The focus is on Onslow College’s aspiration for sporting excellence and the desire to develop strong Football ties in our community. Parents are encouraged to take an active role in supporting students through coaching, managing and refereeing, giving constructive feedback, sharing ideas and sponsorship/ fundraising.

The OCFC Club President is ably supported by parents and members of the Football community on the OCFC committee.

Girls play for Onslow College from Year 9 (and can play for both a club and school). Boys start playing for Onslow College at 15th Grade. Onslow College encourages boys to play for their club at 13th and 14th grade as per the current MOU with Capital Football.

In 2015 we had 8 boys and 3 girls teams playing at all levels up to Premier. Our 15A Boys team won the Premier Junior title.

24 HOCKEY CODE CONVENORS: FIONA WHYTE (GIRLS) KATE KOCH (BOYS)

Onslow College cater for new, social and serious players and provide opportunities for everyone to play a terrific winter sport that doesn't get cancelled due to boggy grounds – we always play on purpose built artificial hockey turfs. In 2016 the College plan to enter three boys’ and two girls’ teams into the Wellington Hockey Asso- ciation Secondary Schools competition. In 2016 both the 1st XI teams will play in the P2 grade. Other teams for both boys and girls play in the Reserve grades and can cater for players new to hockey, social players and more serious players looking to improve their skills. We are always looking for Coaches for future years. If you are interested in coaching, we are happy to work with you to find a suitable coaching or assistant coach position and to support you with further training and qualifications. 25 NETBALL CODE CONVENOR: MEGAN WILLIS

Onslow College has approximately 10-12 teams each year competing in the Wellington Netball Cen- tre competition.

It is our expectation that we will front a similar number of teams in 2016. This is a huge commitment for our volunteer Code Convenor and it is therefore essential that each team has a nominated Coach, Manager and Umpire or they may not be able to be registered.

Senior students are encouraged to take up coaching positions with a Junior team.

In 2016 Collegiate grades 4-8 will continue to play outdoors at Hataitai and Wellington Netball will continue to offer the support and medical services it offered last year. Collegiate 3 and above will continue indoors at ASB Sports Centre.

Training: Before school, lunchtime or after school depending on court availability and Coach availability. The Senior A and B teams train twice a week. Other teams will decide on the number of trainings once coaches are appointed. Competition: Teams will play at the ASB Sports Centre in Kilbirnie or Hataitai Courts on Saturdays, depending on the grade. School teams will play in the Collegiate grades against other school teams. Collegiate games commence on 7 May and run through to the end of August. Uniform: Senior A uniforms are supplied however team members will need to buy a ‘Koru’ t-shirt as a warm up top. $55 All other teams must buy their uniform top and skirt from the Sports Office before the commencement of the season. $110. Fittings will be completed in Feb and orders placed for you. Bibs, balls and first aid kits will be supplied for each team.

Coaching: We are always in need of coaches and managers. Please indicate your interest on the Coaches/Managers/Officials Registration & Contact Form at the back of this booklet. Coaching courses can be provided before and during the season. See details on the Netball Wellington website www.netballwellington.co.nz and register early. Senior students who wish to coach should register their interest on the above mentioned form or at the Sports Office. If there is enough interest we may be able to arrange for courses to be run at school for senior students and parents wanting to coach.

Umpiring: All teams MUST have an umpire and teams may be required to supply their own if the convenors are unable to secure enough help. Onslow College umpires are paid according to their ability and qualification. Each team member will be asked to pay for this service by the first week of play. Fees will be charged to your school account. Umpires will be paid fortnightly directly to their bank account. Please see the Code Convenor if you are interested. There are lots of opportunities to become part of the Wellington Netball Umpires group and gain qualifications and mentoring.

26 RUGBY CODE CONVENOR: REGAN O’NEILL Onslow College 1st XV competes in the Premier grade relevant to the previous seasons placing's. Additional teams will compete in either age or weight grades appropriate to the size and age of the registered students.

In 2015 we were privileged to have Tane Tuipulotu join our Rugby Management Team and offer his extensive experience to the role of Coach Development Officer. This delivered excellent benefits to our students through the strengthening of our coaching team.

In 2016 we welcome Dallas Paotonu as 1st XV Coach. Dallas has an extensive background in playing and coaching and we are looking forward to what he will bring to Rugby at Onslow.

Training: Training days and times will be confirmed once squads are chosen and coaches appointed. Trainings are held at Onslow College. The 1st XV train on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Competition: Saturdays in Terms 2 and 3

Venues: Various schools in the greater Wellington area.

Uniform: Rugby shirts are provided. All Teams will wear the new hoop strip in 2016. All players will be given new socks at weigh in. All Students must purchase shorts ($35) from the Sports Office ahead of the first game of the season in order to take the field.

These may be bought ($80) or hired from the Sports Office for the season ($10) and MUST be worn to all games. - Team polo shirt - $35.00 (subsidised by the sports office) The polo is embroidered with the years a student plays in the 1st XV. 27 TABLE TENNIS CODE CONVENOR: MAIRI ARCHER

Table Tennis is an excellent option for students who may not be involved in any other sport. There is a broad range of skills and ability amongst students in the Wellington area and students will be catered for at all levels. Training: Coaching can be arranged at Onslow College with a table tennis professional in conjunction with College Sport Wellington if there is enough interest. Gym space can be allocated at lunchtimes for students who wish to practice. Competition: Tuesdays from 4pm 5 August—Individual Champs 12 August—Team Champs—Empire Venue: Wellington Table Tennis Stadium, Alexandra Rd. Newtown. Uniform: ‘Koru” design T-shirt available for purchase from the Sports Office

Cost: $20.00 Plus championship entry fees.

28 UNDERWATER HOCKEY

Onslow College will enter an underwater Hockey team in a suitable Open Mixed League in Term 2. Students who are interested can take part in the ‘Have a Go’ programme in March.

Training: Wed 6.30-8.30pm from 2 March 2016 at Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre, Kilbirnie

Equipment: Students need to provide their own sticks, snorkel, mask and flippers. Your coach will assist with information on the appropriate gear and costs. There will be gear available to hire at the pre season “have a go” sessions.

Competition: Friday evenings at Kilbirnie Pool commencing beginning of March with the pre- season “have a go” league. Competition league begins at the end of March. The league will continue in Terms 2 and 3. Qualifying tournament for Nationals 10-12 June in Wellington at WRAC. Nationals 1-4 September, Wellington

Uniform: Own swimwear - team togs to be organised once team confirmed. Caps supplied

Cost: $140 includes registration and pool hire fee. Pool entry for training and games is additional (approx. $3.50 per session) .

Parent Help Required: We are lucky to have the help of a coach and manager however students will need to be transported to and from games and supervised poolside by parents on a rostered basis.

30 EQUESTRIAN

CODE CONVENOR: MAIRI ARCHER No tuition or equipment is provided by Onslow College but interested riders may compete for Onslow in inter-secondary events. Training: The responsibility of individual riders. Competitions: 8 April Dressage, Cambridge 7-8 May Horse Trial Champs, Taupo Nga Tawa and St Matthews Colleges also hold equestrian events which students will be advised about through the daily notices. Uniform: Long sleeved polo shirt to be purchased from the Sports Office. Embroidered with school logo and name of mount. Cost: Entry fees to events and all travel and accommodation costs where applicable. Parent help required: The families of riders must take full responsibility for students and horses at equestrian events.

32 BOWLS (INDOOR) CODE CONVENOR: MAIRI ARCHER Equipment: Provided by the Indoor Bowls Club for events if you don’t own your own. Competition: There is no weekly competition for this code however CSW provide the following events: 30 June—CSW Champs—Onepoto Indoor Bowls Hall 28-29 Aug—NZSS Champs—Onepoto Indoor Bowls Hall Uniform: Onslow ‘Koru’ T-shirt can be loaned Sports Office for this event. Cost: Entry costs for championships and transport costs. Parent Help Required: Transport and supervision is required at all venues. 33 MOTORSPORT CODE CONVENOR: MAIRI ARCHER

We do not run a motorsport programme at Onslow College however the Sports Office will advise students through the daily notices of any Secondary School events. Registration at the beginning of the year will mean we are aware of any interested students. Students and their parents will be solely responsible for safety, transport, accommodation and equipment during motorsport events.

SNOWSPORTS 34 SKIING 34A SNOW BOARDING CODE CONVENOR: JOHN ROBINSON Training: Training programmes are the responsibility of the individual skiers and boarders. However if we have good interest the College will arrange for students and families to meet at the mountain during the season for training.

Competition: North Island SS Skiing Championships - 12 - 14 September North Island SS Snowboard Championships - 19-21 September

Venues: Managed by Ruapehu College and held on Turoa Ski Field, Ohakune.

Uniform: All equipment and clothing is the individual student’s responsibility. The team may wish to purchase a hoodie or similar which can be designed and purchased through the sports office.

Costs: Charged on a per event basis. Costs vary and will be advised when squads for each event are confirmed. $10.00 Administration fee will be charged to school accounts once squads are confirmed in August.

Parent help required: Due to the high risk elements of this sport parents are encouraged to take an active part in supervision of events. The school is also required to provide officials at the competition and parents with suitable skills will be asked to take these roles.

35 SWIMMING CODE CONVENOR: MAIRI ARCHER The School does not run a swimming training programme. However, if we have enough interest a school team or individual may compete in any of the College Sport events outlined below. Students qualifying for CSW Individual Champs will be accompanied by school staff if there is enough interest. Students may choose to go to North Island Secondary School Championships in May or National Champs in September. Students will be advised through the daily notices when entry is due and entries must be placed through the School. NB: we have not travelled as a team to North island or National events in recent times although students have chosen to attend. Parental support is essential if a team is travelling under the Onslow College banner.

Training: Most top swimmers belong to a club and have personal programmes. Contact your local pool for details.

Competition: 14 May—NISS Swim Champs, Palmerston North 18 August—Huia Cup, Naenae Pool 23 June—Individual Champs, Naenae Pool 9-11 September—NZSS Wellington

Uniform: Students to supply their own black togs. Caps will be provided for school related events.

Cost: By event. Additional fees will be incurred if competing at North Island/ NZ Champs as they arise.
