While these events constitute recent manifestations of a particular form of organizing within LGBTQ movements, namely organizations formed around specific racialized identities, they are in fact inscribed within a broader tradition of LGBTQ people of colour (LGBTQ-POC) organizing in Canada, overlooked by academics and mainstream activists. It is in that respect that the aim of this dissertation is twofold. First, it aims to render visible the ways in which people of colour have collectively participated in Montréal’s and Toronto’s LGBTQ movements, or what I refer to as LGBTQ-POC collective engagement trajectories, thereby disrupting dominant, White-centered, LGBTQ narratives. -

Page 1 Minutes of the Eighty-sixth General Meeting British Columbia Conference The United Church of Canada Penticton, BC May 31 – June 3, 2018 First Session, 6:30 P.M., Thursday, May 31, 2018 Authority Pursuant to the authority of the eighty-fifth General Meeting of BC Conference of The United Church of Canada, the eighty-sixth General Meeting convened at The Penticton Trade and Convention Centre, Penticton, BC, and was declared open to conduct the business properly before it, President Cari Copeman-Haynes presiding. A quorum was present. Welcome The President, Cari Copeman-Haynes, welcomed delegates to the meeting. First Nation Hereditary Chief Adam Eneas welcomed the delegates to the traditional, unceded territories Welcome of the Okanagan Nation. Introductions The President invited the table group members to introduce themselves to each other. The President then introduced the musicians for the weekend: Bruce Harding, Rob Copeman- Haynes, Julia Copeman-Haynes and Grace Gauthier. She also acknowledged the Theme & Worship team: Lori Megley-Best (Chair), Ryan Slifka, Brian Thorpe, Maggie Enwright and Will Sparks. Janice Guthrie served as Biblical study resource. It was acknowledged that Jeff Seaton and Leenane Shiels were original members of the Theme and Worship team. Worship The President acknowledged that many people would contribute to the Theme & Worship times during the weekend, including Yoko Kihara, Val Taylor, Dan Kierkegaard, and Richard Chung, members of BC Conference Intercultural Ministries. The worship and theme times throughout the weekend were based on readings from 2 Corinthians 4. 1, 7, 13 – 5:1, 17-20. During the opening worship, the names of those who have died since the last meeting of the Conference were lifted up in remembrance. -

Bulletin de liaison - VOLUME XVII - Nº IV – juin 2016 Le projet de famille et la loi 20 Par Frédérike Lemay-Borduas, membre de la Coalition des familles LGBT Le 10 novembre 2015, la Loi édictant la Loi favorisant l’accès aux services de médecine de famille et de médecine spécialisée et modifiant diverses dispositions législatives en matière de procréation assistée est entrée en vigueur. Cette loi, mieux connue sous le nom de projet de Loi 20 (PL20), met fin à la couverture de plusieurs services entourant la procréation médicalement assistée (PMA) qui étaient auparavant assurés. Pour atténuer les effets du retrait de la couverture publique, des crédits d'impôt remboursables ont été mis en place pour certains traitements d’infertilité. D’autres services demeurent couverts par la Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ), tandis que les frais payés pour d’autres peuvent être éligibles à divers crédits d'impôt remboursables et non remboursables (expliqués ci-dessous). C'est afin d'essayer de démêler ces changements que cet article vous est présenté. Les principales directives apportées par la loi sont résumées dans le tableau suivant. 1 Depuis novembre 2015, seuls les services médicaux entourant les inséminations artificielles et les traitements et médicaments liés à la stimulation ovarienne (hors la fécondation in vitro) demeurent assurés par la RAMQ. Bien qu'aucune mention dans la loi 20 ne fait spécifiquement référence aux paillettes de sperme de donneurs (qui avaient été incluses dans les services médicaux avant), celles-ci ne sont désormais plus couvertes selon les directives publiées par le ministère de la Santé, ni pour les donneurs anonymes, ni pour les donneurs à identités ouvertes. -
A Short History of the United Church of Canada's Young Peoples Union
A Short History of the United Church of Canada’s Young Peoples Union (YPU) Introduction The purpose of this short history is to ensure that the story of the Young Peoples Union movement in the United Church of Canada is remembered and preserved in the files of the Archives of the United Church of Canada. Although this short history is based on the files, stories and achievements of one church; namely, Parkdale United Church of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, the same can be said of many United Churches across Canada during the period after Church Union in 1925. The period from approximately 1930 to 1964 saw the development of the United Church Young Peoples Unions (YPU); some were called “Societies”, (YPS) until 1935. They began to form in churches after the June 10, 1925 union of some of the Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational churches to form the United Church of Canada. It was organized at the National, Conference and Presbytery levels. The YPU had considerable autonomy given to it from the Board of Christian Education. The YPU was born in the Depression years of Canada, 1929-1938, went through the Second World War period, 1939-1945, grew during the post-war period, endured the Korean War of 1950-1953, thrived in the late 50’s as the population of Canada grew, and started to dwindle in the mid-1960s. To examine the Young Peoples Union movement is to look at a very interesting stage of church development and to see 1 how one part of the United Church helped its young people to learn, grow and develop leadership skills and Christian values that have continued to this day. -

The Racial Politics of Same-Sex Marriage in Canada Doctor of Philosophy, 2008 Suzanne Judith Lenon Department of Sociology and Equity Studies in Education University of Toronto Abstract In A White Wedding? The Racial Politics of Same-Sex Marriage, I examine the inter-locking relations of power that constitute the lesbian/gay subject recognized by the Canadian nation-state as deserving of access to civil marriage. Through analysis of legal documents, Parliamentary and Senate debates, and interviews with lawyers, I argue that this lesbian/gay subject achieves intelligibility in the law by trading in on and shoring up the terms of racialized neo-liberal citizenship. I also argue that the victory of same-sex marriage is implicated in reproducing and securing a racialized Canadian national identity as well as a racialized civilizational logic, where “gay rights” are the newest manifestation of the modernity of the “West” in a post-9/11 historical context. By centring a critical race/queer conceptual framework, this research project follows the discursive practices of respectability, freedom and civility that circulate both widely and deeply in this legal struggle. I contend that in order to successfully shed its historical markers of degeneracy, the lesbian/gay subject must be constituted not as a sexed citizen but rather as a neoliberal citizen, one who is intimately tied to notions of privacy, property, autonomy and freedom of choice, and hence one who is racialized as white. -

It has been viewed as the Word of God, a unique work, revealing God and God’s ways to humankind. Authority and the authority of scripture have been questioned, however, in recent years particularly within mainline Protestant denominations. The following study seeks to clarify the role of scripture in discerning theology within congregational life of the United Church of Canada. It begins by examining the view of scripture held by the Protestant Reformers of the 16th and 18th centuries. It moves to discuss how those views have been affected by the rise of modernist and postmodernist thought, and then looks at the changing role of scripture within the history of the United Church. These contextual studies form the base for a case study of the practices and thought of three United Church Councils in the city of Toronto. There, it was found that more experiential factors were the chief influences on United Church lay leaders today as they make theological ii decisions. -

A Journey to Full Communion The Report of the Joint Partnership Committee The United Church of Christ and The United Church of Canada April 2015 The United Church of Canada and The United Church of Christ (USA) share a rich and similar history as “united and uniting” churches in North America. In 2013, both denominations authorized a Joint Partnership Committee to discern the call of God towards entering full communion. After a year of discernment, the committee is recommending through each denomination’s respective executive body that the 30th General Synod of The United Church of Christ, which will meet June 26-30, 2015, in Cleveland, Ohio, and the 42nd General Council of The United Church of Canada, which will meet August 8-15, 2015, in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador, approve a full communion agreement. This document is the formal report of the committee, and is meant to accompany the proposal and serve as a resource for those who will carry the commitment to a full communion relationship into the future. United and Uniting The United Church of Canada came into being in 1925 as the first union in the 20th century to cross historic denominational lines. While union discussions in Canada first began at the end of the 19th century, the Methodist Church in Canada, the Presbyterian Church in Canada (about one-third of Presbyterian churches in Canada stayed out of union), and the Congregational Union of Canada, along with a large number of Local Union Churches which had formed in anticipation of union, formally celebrated the formation of the new church on June 10, 1925 in Toronto, Ontario. -

Homosexuality and prostitution: A tale of two deviancies Ummni Khan University of Toronto Law Journal, Volume 70, Number 3, Summer 2020, pp. 283-305 (Article) Published by University of Toronto Press For additional information about this article https://muse.jhu.edu/article/760438 [ Access provided at 31 Dec 2020 13:39 GMT from University of Ottawa ] Ummni Khan* HOMOSEXUALITY AND PROSTITUTION: A TALE OF TWO DEVIANCIES† Historically, homosexuality and prostitution were both branded immoral vices that required crim- inalization, despite the fact that they were also considered ‘victimless crimes.’ Yet, in contemporary Canadian society, gays and lesbians have gained wide social acceptance and legal rights, while the sex trade has become more criminalized, stigmatized, and, for clients or third parties, vilified. This article explores the reasons for this divergence. First, drawing on radical queer critique, I problematize this framing, arguing that the equality and rights-based victories for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans community did not necessarily benefit all of its members. Building on this insight, I argue that those queers who are unable or uninterested in accessing the benefits ushered in by ‘gay rights’ have identities, proclivities, and vulnerabilities that overlap with those of sex workers and/or their clients. Part I of the article sets the socio-legal and political context, providing succinct overviews of key developments relating to gay and lesbian rights and of key developments relating to sex trade regulation, focusing primarily on the last fifty years.
