Study trip: Jewish life during the inter-war period in present-day

Lviv –Zhovkva –Vinnytsia– Samhorodok - Berdychiv–

The study trip to Ukraine is planned within the framework of Prof. Andrii Portnov’s set of lectures „Introduction into Jewish History of , , and Ukraine” and Bozhena Kozakevych’s seminar „Zwischen Polen und der UdSSR: die Ukraine in der Zwischenkriegszeit, 1918-1939“ (Between Poland and the USSR: Ukraine in the inter-war period, 1918-1939). The trip will take place between the 5th and 10th of August 2019.

The object of study is Jewish history of Eastern Poland and the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic between 1917 and 1939, as well as the coexistence of the Jewish community with other nationalities.

Nowadays Jewish life in present-day Ukraine is frequently regarded as the object of research, while the process of associating Jewish history with Ukraine’s own history is happening. During the trip, the participants will get a chance to become acquainted with important agents of this process. The participants will not only visit big such as , Vinnytsia and Kyiv, they will also learn more about the history of smaller communities in Zhovkva, Samhorodok and Berdychiv.

Different activities will take place throughout the trip: seminars with Ukrainian scientists, meetings with local historians and representatives of Jewish communities. Moreover, the participants will find out how to plan exhibitions with little financial support and how to give young people an understanding of such complex historical topics. The talks with Holocaust survivors will be organized in Vinnytsia and Berdychiv.
