THE PRESENTATION, COLLATION AND INSTALLATION

PRESENTATION

The Dean presents the three Canons-designate to the Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham, The Rt Revd Paul Williams, saying:

Right Reverend Father in God, I present: The Revd Angela Fletcher, to be collated to the Canonry of Rampton; The Right Reverend Mgr Patrick McKinney, to be collated to an Ecumenical Canonry; Bishop Pangani McNight Thipa, to be collated to an Ecumenical Canonry; all in this Cathedral Church.

COLLECT FOR VOCATION AND MINISTRY

Bishop Let us pray.

The Canons-designate kneel before the Bishop. Silence is kept as ordained ministers present recall their ordination promises.

God our Father, Lord of all the world, through your Son you have called us into the fellowship of your universal Church: hear our prayer for your faithful people that in their vocation and ministry each may be an instrument of your love, and give to your servant Andrew the needful gifts of grace; through our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

3 COLLATION

The Registrar reads the Deed of Collation and the Bishop then says

Bishop Angela, I collate you to the Canonry of Rampton; Patrick, I collate you to an Ecumenical Canonry of this Cathedral; Pangani, I collate you to an Ecumenical Canonry of this Cathedral, in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The new Canons are vested with their mantles, and kneel once more before the Bishop

BLESSING

Bishop Angela, Patrick, and Pangani, may God fill you at all times with his wisdom, his love, his strength and his peace, and may his blessing be upon you now and always. Amen.

PSALM 133 sung by the choir, during which new Canons and other clergy, together with the Bishop and Registrar, move to the Quire for the Installation.

Behold, how good and joyful a thing it is: brethren, to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down unto the beard: even unto Aaron’s beard, and went down to the skirts of his clothing. Like as the dew of Hermon: which fell upon the hill of Sion. For there the Lord promised his blessing: and life for evermore. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

Music: Edward Turner (b. 1992)

4 INSTALLATION

The Dean takes the new Canons to their stalls, saying to each, in turn

N, I place you in this stall assigned to you as a member of the College of Canons of this Cathedral Church with all its responsibilities and opportunities for service.

After all the new Canons have been installed, they say together

I solemnly declare that I will serve the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Southwell by exercising the ministry laid upon me as a member of its Foundation with openness to God, with zeal for the Gospel of Jesus Christ and his Kingdom, and in obedience to its Constitution and Statutes.

Dean Almighty God, the giver of all that is good, we pray that you will defend these your servants Angela, Patrick, and Pangani, that they may so serve you here on earth that after this life they may inherit eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

5 OFFICE HYMN sung by the choir as the procession returns to the Nave.

Let the round world with songs rejoice, Let heaven return the joyful voice, All mindful of the Apostles’ fame, Let heaven and earth their praise proclaim.

Ye servants who once bore the light Of gospel truth o’er heathen night, Still may your work that light impart, To glad our eyes and cheer our heart.

O God, by whom to them was given The key that shuts and opens heaven, Our chains unbind, our loss repair, And grant us grace to enter there.

For at thy will they preached the word Which cured disease, which health conferred; O may thy healing power once more Our souls to grace and health restore.

That when as judge thy Son shall come To bring his ransomed people home, He may with them pronounce us blest, And place us in thine endless rest.

To God the Father, God the Son, And God the Spirit, Three in One, Be honour, praise and majesty, Now and throughout eternity. Amen.

6 PSALMODY sung by the choir Psalm 19

The heavens declare the glory of God : and the firmament sheweth his handywork. One day telleth another : and one night certifieth another. There is neither speech nor language : but their voices are heard among them. Their sound is gone out into all lands : and their words into the ends of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun : which cometh forth as a bridegroom out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a giant to run his course. It goeth forth from the uttermost part of the heaven, and runneth about unto the end of it again : and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof. The law of the Lord is an undefiled law, converting the soul : the testimony of the Lord is sure, and giveth wisdom unto the simple. The statutes of the Lord are right, and rejoice the heart : the commandment of the Lord is pure, and giveth light unto the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean, and endureth for ever : the judgements of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold : sweeter also than honey, and the honey-comb. Moreover, by them is thy servant taught : and in keeping of them there is great reward. Who can tell how oft he offendeth : O cleanse thou me from my secret faults. Keep thy servant also from presumptuous sins, lest they get the dominion over me : so shall I be undefiled, and innocent from the great offence. Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart : be alway acceptable in thy sight, O Lord : my strength, and my redeemer.

FIRST LESSON read by the Canon Precentor Isaiah 52: 7–10

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces peace, who brings good news, who announces salvation, who says to Zion, ‘Your God reigns.’ Listen! Your sentinels lift up their voices, together they sing for joy; for in plain sight they see the return of the LORD to Zion. Break forth together into singing, you ruins of Jerusalem; for the LORD has comforted his people, he has redeemed Jerusalem. The LORD has bared his holy arm before the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.

Please stand

8 ANTIPHON AND MAGNIFICAT sung by the choir

Saints and just ones, rejoice in the Lord, alleluia: the Lord has chosen you for his inheritance, alleluia.

My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded: the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel: as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

Saints and just ones, rejoice in the Lord, alleluia: the Lord has chosen you for his inheritance, alleluia.

9 SECOND LESSON read by the Dean Mark 1: 1–15

The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

As it is written in the prophet Isaiah, ‘See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way; the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight” ’,

John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, ‘The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.’

In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.’

And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness for forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him.

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.’

10 NUNC DIMITTIS sung by the choir

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace: according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen: thy salvation. Which thou hast prepared: before the face of all people; To be a light to lighten the Gentiles: and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

Words: Luke 2: 29-32 Music: from EVENING SERVICE IN B FLAT Henry Purcell (1659-95)

11 CREED

I believe in God the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy ; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

LESSER LITANY, LORD’S PRAYER AND RESPONSES sung by the Canon Precentor and choir

The Lord be with you: And with thy spirit.

Let us pray.

Please sit or kneel

Lord, have mercy upon us: Christ, have mercy upon us: Lord, have mercy upon us.

12 Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us: And grant us thy salvation.

O Lord, save the Queen: And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee.

Endue thy Ministers with righteousness: And make thy chosen people joyful.

O Lord, save thy people: And bless thine inheritance.

Give peace in our time, O Lord: Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God.

O God, make clean our hearts within us: And take not thy Holy Spirit from us.

COLLECT FOR THE DAY

O Almighty God, who hast instructed thy holy Church with the heavenly doctrine of thy Evangelist Saint Mark: Give us grace, that, being not like children carried away with every blast of vain doctrine, we may be established in the truth of thy holy Gospel; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

13 COLLECT FOR PEACE

O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed; give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that both, our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that, by thee, we being defended from the fear of our enemies may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

COLLECT FOR AID AGAINST ALL PERILS

Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

ANTHEM sung by the choir

My beloved spake, and said unto me, Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away. For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone: the flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land; the fig-tree putteth forth her green figs, and the vines with the tender grape give a good smell. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.
