Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time. -

Production Perspectives of Heavy Metal Record Producers

Production Perspectives of Heavy Metal Record Producers Dr Niall Thomas University of Winchester Dr Andrew King University of Hull Abstract The study of the recorded artefact from a musicological perspective continues to unfold through contemporary research. Whilst an understanding of the scientific elements of recorded sound is well documented the exploration of the artistic nature of this endeavour from a production viewpoint is still developing. This study presents an understanding of the phenomenological aspects of Heavy Metal music from the perspective of seven renowned producers working within this genre. Through a series of interviews and subsequent in-depth analysis particular sonic qualities are identified as key within the production of this work: impact; energy; precision; and extremity. A framework is then put forward for understanding sonic elements of recorded Heavy Metal Music. Keywords: recording; Heavy Metal; production; producers; phenomenology Introduction The twenty-first century provides a rich source of creative opportunity through digital technology for practicing musicians to record music. The affordances of the digital revolution have subsequently changed the opportunities for those involved in the creation of such works. Technology enables those who could be described as amateur music makers the opportunity to record music with relative ease. The democratisation of technology has meant that mobile devices can become pocket sized recording studios (Leyshon, 2009), whilst affordable solutions and emulations of previously prohibitively expensive computing and recording technology are readily available via the Internet. -

Box 90153, 5000 LE Tilburg, The Netherlands; [email protected] Abstract: This paper is an inquiry into a contemporary heavy metal band from Sweden called Ghost. Ghost released its first studio album in 2010 and, while there is some discussion as to what their genre is exactly, they immediately became a rising star in the metal scene. Yet what is of particular interest from a storytelling point of view, especially with regard to theological answers to philosophical questions in popular culture, is that the band presents itself as a satanic version of the Catholic Church through their stage act and lyrics. This made me curious whether they are trying to convey a message and, if yes, what that message might be. For the present paper, I have focused on the latter by performing a non-exhaustive textual analysis of the lyrics in a selection of songs from each of the four studio albums released so far. Ghost turns Christian liturgy on its head by utilizing devout language that is normally reserved for God and Christ to describe Satan and the Antichrist, a strategy I have called the ”satanification” of Christian doctrine, and in doing so their songs evoke imagery of a satanic faith community at prayer. The band then uses this radical inversion of traditional Christian themes to criticize certain elements of society, especially those aspects they associate with organized religion. -

The “Spiritual Temperature” of Contemporary Popular Music: An Alternative to the Legal Regulation of Death-Metal and Gangsta-Rap Lyrics Tracy Reilly* ABSTR ACT The purpose of this Article is to contribute to the volume of legal scholarship that focuses on popular music lyrics and their effects on children. This interdisciplinary cross-section of law and culture has been analyzed by legal scholars, philosophers, and psychologists throughout history. This Article specifically focuses on the recent public uproar over the increasingly violent and lewd content of death- metal and gangsta-rap music and its alleged negative influence on children. Many legal scholars have written about how legal and political efforts throughout history to regulate contemporary genres of popular music in the name of the protection of children’s morals and well-being have ultimately been foiled by the proper judicial application of solid First Amendment free-speech principles. Because the First Amendment prevents musicians from being held liable for their lyrics, and prevents the content of lyrics from being regulated, some scholars have suggested that the perceived problems with popular music lyrics could be dealt with by increasing public awareness and group action. * Assistant Professor of Law, University of Dayton School of Law, Program in Law & Technology, Dayton, Ohio. Nous y voila,les 18 ans du fanzine frappent à la porte ! Ils sont fêtés comme il se doit avec la compilation des 18 ans » birthday compil’ » où l’on retrouve plus de vingt groupes qui arrivent de tous les horizons. Merci à eux d’avoir joué le jeu, il y en a pour tous les gouts en plus. Bref, l’année s’annonce moins productive en matière de fanzine ,car mon temps n’est pas extensible et cela devient de plus en plus dur d’arriver à un fanzine par mois ,voir tous les deux mois.J’en sortirai donc un quand j’aurai envie ,peut être deux ou trois par an. Ceci dit, la page facebook sera toujours alimentée de chroniques quasi journalière, car je croule totalement sous les albums en retard, et vu la difficulté que j’ai à trouver une aide réelle pour chroniquer, je suis encore pour le moment seul sur le navire.. Ma motivation est intacte, même si en ce moment j’ai pas mal pensé à tout arrêter. Ça se fera peut-être sur un coup de tête avant la fin de l’année, qui sait ? Je vais mettre ces doutes sur le compte de la majorité et l’Age bête qu’a le fanzine aujourd’hui. Mars attack !! C’est aussi le mois de mon anniversaire ce mois de mars, j’aurai 18 ans aussi…Bon, un peu plus..Mais cela fêtera aussi ma confirmation au monde du métal, qui dure depuis 1979..Beau score non ? Cela me donne des connaissances en la matière, cependant, je suis heureux d’en apprendre encore tous les jours car avec cette musique c’est sans fin cette affaire-là. -
