Angelology A Study of the Biblical Doctrine of Angels Selected Scriptures
The doctrine of angels is an oft-neglected area of biblical study. For some, the subject seems too immature to spend much time and thought on. There are those who would like to concern themselves with, what they consider, more weighty spiritual matters.
Others lack an interest in discussing the role of angels in God’s design because the fruit of that study doesn’t always appear immediately actionable. After all, what are we to “do” with the information? How does the study of angels directly impact my walk with God in my daily life? The answer to those questions is simple; the study of angels helps believers to see the glory of God in their creation, the plan of God in their use, and the sovereign power of God in their subjection. What we do as a result of studying heavenly beings is deepen our awe of and confidence in God.
Angels are mentioned in at least 34 of the 66 books of the Bible. They are referred to
273 times in total. There are 108 references in the Old Testament and 165 in the New
Testament. Some difficulties arise in their study because angels are always spoken of incidentally in the context of some other topic. Scripture addresses the subject of angels simply to highlight some aspect of the nature of God. Angels do not exist unto themselves.
They exist, as does all creation, for the glory of God. While we cannot know what God has not revealed in Scripture, we must mine the spiritual gems imbedded in the bedrock of the
Bible with the full assurance that according to 2 Peter 1:3a, “His divine power has granted us all things that pertain to life and godliness.” God has deemed what has been revealed as sufficient for our salvation and sanctification. As we study the angelic beings, our faith will be enriched and enlarged as we come to know Him as the Lord of Hosts!
