She is St Veronica Giuliani, a Poor Clare Capuchin nun. The reason is that 27 December will be the 350th anniversary of her birth. Città di Castello, the place where she lived the longest and where she died, as well as Mercatello — her birthplace — and the Diocese of Urbino are celebrating this event with joy. Indeed, Veronica was born on 27 December 1660 in Mercatello, in the Metauro Valley to Francesco Giuliani and Benedetta Mancini. She was the last of seven sisters, three of whom were to embrace the monastic life. She was given the name “Orsola” [Ursula]. She was seven years old when her mother died and her father moved to Piacenza as customs superintendent of the Duchy of Parma. It was in this city that Ursula felt a growing desire to dedicate her life to Christ. The call to her became ever more pressing so that, when she was 17, she entered the strict cloister of the monastery of Capuchin Poor Clares in Città di Castello. She was to remain here for the rest of her life. Here she received the name of “Veronica”, which means “true image” and she was in fact to become a true image of the Crucified Christ. 2 A year later she made her solemn religious profession and the process of configuration to Christ began for her, through much penance, great suffering, and several mystic experiences linked to the Passion of Jesus: being crowned with thorns, the mystical espousal, the wound in her heart and the stigmata.

For memorials: a) Proper texts, given on some days, must always be used; b) When there is a reference to a particular common, the most appropriate texts should be chosen according to the principles at the beginning of the commons. It is always permissible to interchange texts from several Masses within the same common. During the General Audience last December 15th, the Holy Father announced the opening of the year dedicated to Saint Veronica Giuliani, marking the 350 years that have elapsed since her birthday on 27th December, 1660. This jubilee year was officially inaugurated at Città di Castello on December 27th with the translation of the saint’s body from the monastery to the cathedral. This saint belongs to us, she is one of our own, she comes from the Capuchin reform, and she personifies the immense and mysterious charismatic potential of the “Spirit of the Lord and his holiness at work within us”, to which she was docile in the highest degree. When we approach her through her writings she seems at first sight a difficult saint, from a different age; her language is unusual, sometimes rough, bound up with a kind of mysticism and especially an asceticism which we do not immediately understand. She is a saint whose life consists of penances, offerings, sacrifices and renunciations, either sought by herself or imposed on her, which are often incomprehensible.

The pope made the announcement at the end of the Mass celebrated on the morning of Saturday, August 20, in the cathedral of Madrid, with the seminarians who had gone there for World Youth Day. So the title of doctor of the Church has once again been assigned to a man, after being granted consecutively to the first three women in history to bear it: Paul VI invested Saint Teresa of Avila and Saint Catherine of Siena with it in 1970; John Paul II gave it to Saint Thérèse of Lisieux in 1997.     Religion, Literature and tile Arts Project A STUDY IN ICONOGRAPHY: ST. CATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA Carolyn Muir The relationship between religion and art has for centuries been a close one. Indeed, the very purpose of European art for most of its history was to serve religion. Yet the nature of that relationship is a complex one and gives rise to certain fundamental questions: What is the connection between visual and textual traditions? What transformations occur in images produced in different times and places, and why do they occur? How do these changes in visual imagery affect the concepts transmitted by the images? These questions will be considered in relation to the iconography of St. Catherine of Alexandria, for centuries an immensely popular figure of devotion. Although her story supposedly occurred during the 4th century, no written record has been found preceding the 9th century.1 Her story was popularised through its inclusion in the Golden Legend of Jacobus de Voragine, a compendium of the lives of the saints that appeared in the 1260s and was translated into many languages.2 Catherine's cult spread widely during the Middle Ages, especially between the 13th and 15th centuries.3 She was adopted as patron saint by many groups, because of the various aspects of her story. She is the patron of young maidens, scholars, and philosophers as well as many professions relating to wheels: millers, wheelwrights, potters, and knife-grinders among them.4 In 1969, the Catholic Church removed Catherine from its Calendar of Saints along with a number of other popular saints, as no historical evidence could be found that she actually existed.s It has been suggested that her story may have been inspired by that of Hypatia, the famous 4th century woman scientist, whose martyrdom in Alexandria by fanatical Christians parallels in reverse Catherine's story.6 Like all saints, St.
