The Rimington Trophy Committee Proudly Announced its 2018 Gerald R. Ford Legends Award Recipient, Lieutenant General (Ret) Robert L. Caslen, Jr.

After being created in 2005 by the Rimington Trophy and the office of President Gerald R. Ford, the Ford Legends Award has been presented annually to a former collegiate or professional center who, like the award’s namesake, distin- guished himself above and beyond the football field.

"I am honored to receive this award, particularly under the namesake of President Gerald R. Ford,” Caslen said. “Knowing the character of President Ford and what he stood for makes it even more special. I have always admired how he filled in as our President when our Nation Lee Byon and Mike Hill and Byon Lee needed him the most. Jon Meacham “The Soul of America: The Battle For Our Better Angels” Joint Program with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation & Museum and the Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies Thursday, January 10, 2019

Grand Rapids: The intense acrimony pervading American civic life today is not unique. In fact, it can be traced to the founding of our republic. Our American story, filled with dramatic conflicts that give rise to hope and fear, assures victory to no leader, party, or faction. We, the people, are the ultimate arbiters of

these conflicts and must choose how to go forward.

In partnership with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation and the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library & Museum, the Hauenstein Center brought renowned historian Jon Meacham back to West . The bestselling author and Pulitzer Prize winner presented insights from his latest

book, The Soul of America: The Battle For Our Better Angels.

Jon Meacham is a renowned presidential historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author. A member of the Council on Foreign Relations and of the Society of American Historians, Meacham is a distinguished visiting professor at Vanderbilt University. He is a contrib- uting writer to Book Review, a contributing editor of Time, and has written for The New York Times op-ed page, The Washington Post, Vanity Fair, and Garden & Gun. Meacham is also a regular guest on Morning Joe and other broad- casts. Meacham’s other books include: Destiny and Power: The American Odyssey of George Herbert Walker Bush; American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House; Franklin and Winston: An Intimate Portrait of an Epic Friendship; and Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power. H.W. Brands: “Comedian-in-Chief: What Presidents’ Humor Says About Them, and About Us” Joint Program with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation & Museum and the Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies Thursday, February 7, 2019

Grand Rapids: Humor often feels in short supply amid the hyperpolarization, loneliness, and resentment presently afflicting our polity. Fortunately, H.W. Brands – the Jack S. Blanton Senior Chair in History at the University of Texas, Austin – has much to share about the joke-telling chops of American presidents, the funny bone of the American people, and the serious role of humor in American democracy.

On Thursday, February 7, the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation, the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library & Museum, and the Hauenstein Center at Grand Valley State University partnered to host Professor Brands, author of thirty books and two-time Pulitz- er Prize finalist, for yet another captivating and enlightening presentation. By number of visits, he remains the most popular guest speaker of the longstanding Ford-Hauenstein partnership.

With characteristic ambition and peerless style, Brands deftly guided an audience of more than 400 community members through a crash course on humor and the presiden- cy, from George Washington to Donald Trump, titled “Comedian-in-Chief: What Presi- dents’ Humor Says about Them, and about Us.” His packed audience in Grand Rapids was the first to hear his thoughts on this important subject, as Brands considers the pos- sibility of a new book project.

Field Trip to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library

On December 7th, 2018, the Foundation sponsored a field trip for the eighth grade students from Gerald R. Ford Academic Center in Grand Rapids to visit Ann Arbor. Before the trip, the students worked with Foundation educator, Clare Shubert, to learn about President Ford and practice document analyzation. After an early morning bus ride, the big day started at the Presi- dential Library, where the staff gave a tour and taught students to analyze primary sources using original photographs and Watergate documents. Next, the group was off to learn about college life with a tour of the campus— complete with lunch in one of the dorms! Finally, they headed to Schembechler Hall where Coaches Jack and Jim Harbaugh greeted the students, toured them through the athletic facility, and even invited them to watch practice from the sidelines. Many, many thanks to all who made this an unforgettable day for the students!

Victors of Character: A Story of Loyalty, Integrity, and the Courage to Make a Difference

The 2018-2019 season of Victors of Character: a Story of Loyalty, Integrity, and the Courage to Make a Difference continued on February 21st and 22nd in the auditorium of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum. The play is based on the true events of 1934, when a young Gerald Ford was faced with a challenge that both revealed and tested his character. Willis Ward, Ford’s African American friend and University of Michigan teammate, was omitted from a game against Georgia Tech because of the Jim Crow laws of the South. Through live theater, students watch as those events unfold and learn about how it motivated both Ford and Ward to work toward a society that guaranteed civil rights for all. Over 800 students from a variety of public, private, and charter schools throughout took part in the performances in February. For many students, seeing the play may be the first introduction they have to President Ford and is often the first live theater performance they’ve attended. Each show includes a “talk back” at the end, during which students are able to ask questions and interact with the cast members. Hearing their reflections on the story is always a powerful

experience. Many thanks to the generous sponsors that make this experience possible at no cost to schools: Mercantile Bank, Grand Valley State University, The Gremel Group, Susan and Bob Brown, Andrew and Meredith Gremmel, Jack and Jackie Harbaugh, Dr. Robert Humphries and Mrs. Marie Zerweck, and Warner Norcross + Judd LLP.

JJ Green “National Security in Threatening Times Tuesday, December 11, 2018

Ann Arbor: The Library presented a thought-provoking program by JJ Green, winner of the 2017 Gerald R. Ford Journalism Prize for Distinguished Reporting on National Defense and a correspondent with WTOP radio in Washington, DC,

specializing in global security matters.

In his insightful talk, Mr. Green focused primarily on the impact of technology on national security and contended that the pace of technological change is one of the greatest threats to national security. He stated that the flow of information is so great these days that people are struggling to keep up with the barrage, which leads to distractions as we try to process the growing glut of information and sort fact from fiction. In illustrating this point, Mr. Green described some of the social media activities and tactics, including troll factories created to fabricate and spread misleading and untrue points of view, employed by the Russian Federation during the 2016 presidential election to try and sway public opinion for or against certain candidates as a means of furthering their own national interests. While Mr. Green painted a bleak picture at times, he remained optimistic that the country will

weather the storm in the long run as we learn how to better counter these technological Library Presidential Ford R. Gerald

challenges to our national security.

The audience of 180 people asked many great questions during the question and answer session and continued the riveting discussion with our speaker at the reception following the program. “Pajama Story Time” at the Ford Museum

On December 9th, 2018, the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum welcomed

pajama-clad children and their families to enjoy a “Polar Express” themed party.

The first-ever “Pajama Story Time” was an opportunity for guests to view the new train display in the Museum’s lobby. The train, proudly displayed at the nearby Breton Village Mall for decades, debuted in its new home at the Museum this past December. After watching the train whiz around the tracks and finding all of the items on the display’s scavenger hunt (including a miniature version of our President Ford statue!), children were invited into the Learning Center for a special treat. Mac, the morning DJ from “West Michigan’s Christmas Music Station”, Star 105.7, did a special reading of his favorite holiday story, The Polar Express by Chris Van

Allsburg.
