Copyright 2013 Shawn Patrick Gilmore THE INVENTION OF THE GRAPHIC NOVEL: UNDERGROUND COMIX AND CORPORATE AESTHETICS BY SHAWN PATRICK GILMORE DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2013 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Michael Rothberg, Chair Professor Cary Nelson Associate Professor James Hansen Associate Professor Stephanie Foote ii Abstract This dissertation explores what I term the invention of the graphic novel, or more specifically, the process by which stories told in comics (or graphic narratives) form became longer, more complex, concerned with deeper themes and symbolism, and formally more coherent, ultimately requiring a new publication format, which came to be known as the graphic novel. This format was invented in fits and starts throughout the twentieth century, and I argue throughout this dissertation that only by examining the nuances of the publishing history of twentieth-century comics can we fully understand the process by which the graphic novel emerged. In particular, I show that previous studies of the history of comics tend to focus on one of two broad genealogies: 1) corporate, commercially-oriented, typically superhero-focused comic books, produced by teams of artists; 2) individually-produced, counter-cultural, typically autobiographical underground comix and their subsequent progeny. In this dissertation, I bring these two genealogies together, demonstrating that we can only truly understand the evolution of comics toward the graphic novel format by considering the movement of artists between these two camps and the works that they produced along the way.

When Jay and Silent Bob discover that Hollywood is rebooting an old movie based on them, the clueless duo embark on another cross-country mission to stop it all over again! 1 CAST & CREW BIOGRAPHIES: KEVIN SMITH (Silent Bob, Director / Writer) Kevin Smith has been saying silly cinematic shit since his first film Clerks, released way back in 1994. He had a heart attack and almost died last year but survived solely so he could direct his magnum opus, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. A polygamist, he’s married to both his wife Jen and podcasting. JASON MEWES (Jay) Jason Mewes most recently made his directorial debut on MADNESS IN THE METHOD, which was released in August 2019. With cult-fans following his controversial antics, Mewes has captured audiences with his rebellious banter against his unspoken other half and longtime friend, Kevin Smith. Since the beginning of the duo’s offbeat work together, Mewes and Smith have continued to build on their beloved character-driven roles from the Jay and Silent Bob series. It’s been over a decade since fans last saw the duo in live- action, but they’re back along with a star-studded cast in the upcoming comedy film, JAY AND SILENT BOB REBOOT.

  • New Pulp-Related Books and Periodicals Available from Michael Chomko, Books for April 2005 April 2, 2005
New pulp-related books and periodicals available from Michael Chomko, Books for April 2005 April 2, 2005 I had been releasing my catalog around the beginning of each month, but my school work is going to interfere with doing that this April. My schedule for the second half of the spring semester is loaded up front. So I’ve decided to move my catalog release up a couple of weeks to avoid conflicts with papers, presentations, tests, and the like. Over the last two weeks, I’ve shipped about $4-5,000 worth of books. So if you have something on order with me, you’ve either received it or it is on its way. I shipped around thirty orders just this morning. Before moving to the new books, I’d like to remind you that I offer a discount of approximately 10% on orders over $20. The prices listed in my catalog are list prices (rounded to whole dollars). So your cost will be about 10% off the prices listed. Shipping is between $2-6, depending on the weight of your order, as long as you are happy getting your order via media mail or bound printed matter. If you prefer UPS or priority mail, shipping will cost more. Shipping outside of the United States will also be more. I can take cash payments, but not credit card payments, through Paypal at [email protected] . Checks and money orders can be sent to Michael Chomko, 2217 W. Fairview Street, Allentown, PA 18104-6542. If there’s something that I don’t list, please ask.

FinalProject 25/08/2018, 930 PM COGS108 Final Project Group Members: Yanyi Wang Ziwen Zeng Lingfei Lu Yuhan Wang Yuqing Deng Introduction and Background Movie revenue is one of the most important measure of good and bad movies. Revenue is also the most important and intuitionistic feedback to producers, directors and actors. Therefore it is worth for us to put effort on analyzing what factors correlate to revenue, so that producers, directors and actors know how to get higher revenue on next movie by focusing on most correlated factors. Our project focuses on anaylzing all kinds of factors that correlated to revenue, for example, genres, elements in the movie, popularity, release month, runtime, vote average, vote count on website and cast etc. After analysis, we can clearly know what are the crucial factors to a movie's revenue and our analysis can be used as a guide for people shooting movies who want to earn higher renveue for their next movie. They can focus on those most correlated factors, for example, shooting specific genre and hire some actors who have higher average revenue. Reasrch Question: Various factors blend together to create a high revenue for movie, but what are the most important aspect contribute to higher revenue? A CHOICE OF NIGHTMARES: The Adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness in Francis Ford Coppola’s Film Apocalypse Now Pekka Alava University of Tampere School of Modern Languages and Translation Studies English Philology Second Subject Thesis June 2008 Tampereen yliopisto Englantilainen filologia Kieli- ja käännöstieteen laitos ALAVA, PEKKA: A Choice of Nightmares: The Adaption of Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness in Francis Ford Coppola’s Film Apocalypse Now Sivuainelaudatur, 35 sivua, kesäkuu 2008 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tutkimukseni tarkoitus on paneutua Joseph Conradin 1800-luvun Belgian Kongoon sijoittuvan teoksen Heart of Darkness (1899) elokuvasovitukseen Apocalypse Now, jonka Francis Ford Coppola ohjasi vuonna 1979.
