Press Kit 2018 // introduction Launched in 2016 by Renault Sport Racing and Renault Sport Formula One Team, the Renault Sport Academy is tasked with discovering and nurturing young driver talent through the racing ranks, where, ultimately, Renault Sport Formula One Team aims to find drivers able to deliver the team world championship titles. WELCOME BACK TO BAKU Dear friends, On behalf of Baku City Circuit, please let me welcome you to the third successive Formula 1 race weekend in Azerbaijan. Last year’s race in Baku was widely recognised as the most exciting and dramatic race of the year – if not the decade – by members of the media, teams, drivers and the global F1 fanbase alike. It truly was a race that had it all culminating in the most unexpected podium line up in many years. The fact that this historic race occurred under our new event title as the FORMULA 1 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX filled us with an even greater sense of pride and satisfaction for a job well done. This year we once again welcome the world to Baku at the slightly earlier date of late April to bear witness to the awe-inspiring sight of F1 cars negotiating one of the fastest and most testing circuits in Formula 1. Baku City Circuit’s winding, narrow sequences, 90-degree turns and high-speed straights - all set against the breath- taking backdrop of Baku’s UNESCO-protected old city, magnificent skylines and beautiful seaside promenade - have proven to be a major challenge to the current F1 grid, resulting in last year’s spectacular outcome and many on-track altercations. We are very confident of a similar explosion of drama, speed and bravery occurring once again for the 2018 edition. Furthermore, the off-track entertainment will be bigger and better than ever before with world-class music, visual and conceptual artists once again performing all along the specially constructed Fan Zone all weekend.

For more information, please contact [email protected]. Race Cartels: How Constructor Collaboration Is Curbing Innovation in Formula 1 ABSTRACT Formula 1 is in the midst of a copycat scandal: technology has made it possible for teams to reverse engineer clones of competitors’ race cars. This is a less than ideal state of affairs for the championship series, which prides itself on being the pinnacle of motorsport and automotive innovation, thanks in large part to the cars’ rapid rate of technological advancement. In order to address this problem, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), Formula 1’s governing body, must increase independent innovation efforts by amending the technical regulations to restrict the extent of presently allowed inter-team collaboration. Worried that the sport was becoming a “copying championship,” the FIA adopted new measures that ban extreme reverse engineering methods.

  • Champions Return to Mark Transition from Renault to Alpine
CHAMPIONS RETURN TO MARK TRANSITION FROM RENAULT TO ALPINE After more than 40 years in Formula 1, two Drivers’ and two Constructors’ World Championship titles, 35 wins and 399 race starts, the 2020 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will be the final race for the Renault team name before it hands the baton to sister brand Alpine in 2021. Renault will celebrate its heritage with a remarkable demonstration run in Abu Dhabi linking past, present and future. Fernando Alonso will be reunited with his championship-winning 2005 R25 car ahead of his 2021 return: a symbol of our joint heritage but intense appetite for further success. The R25 to this day remains one of the most remarkable cars in the history of Formula 1. Powered by the iconic Renault V10 engine, which had been dominant across the 90s and early noughties, the R25’s sharp chassis design and distinctive blue and yellow livery made it instantly recognisable. Across the 19-race 2005 season, Fernando and team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella scored eight wins, including a poignant victory at the team’s home race in France, seven pole positions and 18 podiums to give Renault its first Constructors’ championship and Fernando his first Drivers’ title. Now, 15 years later, the R25 will run again after a remarkable restoration from Renault Sport Racing’s Enstone and Viry sites and industry specialists Rennwerk Company, based in Germany. Last used for a demo run in 2006, the R25 was stored as part of the Renault Classic collection until a project to restore the ‘Beast’ to its full glory got underway in 2018.

FEDERATION INTERNATIONALE DE L' AUTOMOBILE 2018 FIA Formula One World Championship Belgian Grand Prix Friday Press Conference Transcript 24.08.2018 PART ONE - TEAM REPRESENTATIVES – Cyril ABITEBOUL (Renault), Christian HORNER (Red Bull), Gil DE FERRAN (McLaren) PRESS CONFERENCE Q: Cyril, we had Daniel Ricciardo in here yesterday explaining his decision to join Renault. When did you start talks with Daniel and just how did that deal come about from a Renault point of view. Cyril ABITEBOUL: Obviously, we have known Daniel since a while for the collaboration we naturally have on the engine side with Red Bull since 12 years. We’ve had random discussions – jokes – with Daniel since a while. It would be hard to put an exact date on the first joke about this type of switch. But I’d say that’s it’s a while since we’ve expressed our interest in him, the fact that we liked him, his style, his skills, his talent, his leadership and the fact that there could be an opportunity for him at Renault. We’ve always been clear with what we are, what we are not yet, that we are still in the making. That if he was interested in a turnkey organisation, in a turnkey team with a turnkey car that would not be with us – but if he was interested in a project in construction where he could play a role, we would be interested. So, you know, that’s where we left it and we accepted also since day one it would take him a bit of time to digest and to consider because it was an important decision, you know such a switch is complex.

  • Press Kit 2018 // FOREWORD
Press Kit 2018 // FOREWORD It is a great source of pride for Groupe Renault and its employees to see the Renault name once again working its way to the sharp end of Formula 1. Motor racing is an intrinsic part of the Renault DNA and from Formula E races in cities to rallying through to Formula 1, we have always achieved outstanding results. Renault Sport Formula One Team’s ambition is clearly to uphold the outstanding record of the past and the 2017 season has confirmed we are on the right track. We are a team on the rise. We have two very talented drivers who are hungry for results. Enstone is regenerated and the workforce has already increased by more than 35%. At Viry, our long-term commitment in several motorsport categories allows to develop a detailed plan for our facilities. Our investment has so far been successfully translated to the track as we rose from ninth to sixth in the Constructors’ Championship in 2017 and ended the year with the fourth fastest car. The success of the programme in just two years is testament to the resilient plan laid down early in the creation of the team and the strong job done by Cyril and the entire Renault Sport Racing teams. I am convinced year three will take us one step closer to the long-term aim: winning races and challenging for championships. We are equally satisfied with the results we are seeing off-track. Formula 1’s new owners, have developed various marketing initiatives that have enabled the sport to grow into an even bigger brand and engage more closely with fans; steps forward which are incredibly important for us as the only mass market car constructor in the sport.
