English Country Dance On Sanibel n July 26, a group of English country dancers came to the Sanibel Community House for a night of live music, interest- Oing patterns, and a roomful of friendly people who love to move to music. Dancers came from Sanibel, Fort Myers, and the Orlando area. If you've never heard of English county dancing, says Gillian Carney, a member of a local group, you may have seen it and not known. "If you've watched Pride and Prejudice or seen Sense and Sensibility or Emma at the movies, you have some idea of what it is like." It has been around at least several hundred years and the music comes from old ballads, classical music, and even operas. Dancers move in a number of specific patterns, not unlike square dancing; danc- ers don't need a partner. Each dance is prompted by a caller and they always do a walk-through before they begin. Wa-Ke Hatchee Recreational Center on Summeriin Road has started English country dance classes.
