How to Cook on a Campfire I am going to be showing how to use a specific campfire technique called a Swedish torch fire. These campfires are great for use on a windy day and burn very hot and efficiently. The best part is all that is needed is a large cut log, some kindling and wire. The fire does not need to be replenished at all while cooking. The first step is to go out and find a large round log. These can be sawed off dead trees and it is important to know what wood you are using and to find dry pieces. I decided to use a log from a spruce tree since softwoods start easier than hardwood. With the log you have found, the next step is to split it into four pieces making them as even as possible which is what I’m doing here with a splitting maul. Once you have your four split pieces, it is time to place them back together so you know how much to carve out of the middle. These two pictures are the process of carving out the pieces. For this, I used a hatchet. Once you have carved out the middle of the split pieces, it is time to tie the pieces back together with wire. There should be a hole in the middle of the large enough to fit your hand into. It is also good to know that it is not necessary for the pieces to fit perfectly back together. Cracks between them actually is good for airflow to the fire. The reason I put it back together with wire is because rope will eventually burn off from the heat of the fire. Next, I put some dry grass and birch bark in the bottom of the log. I also put the log on some stones so air could flow through the bottom of the fire. Now the easiest part is lighting the fire! With a match, I lit the birch and slowly added some of the kindling I got from shaping the split pieces of wood. It didn’t take more than two minutes before the logs themselves started to burn which is what actually fuels the torch. Within a couple of minutes, the fire was burning very well and the wind actually helped heat it up even faster. I did not even use any lighter fluid or even firewood. This was all from what I was able to find in the woods. I decided to show how easy it is to cook on the torch method because there is no need for any rocks, branches or metal to be placed over the fire and all the heat is directed out of the hole in the top. The egg cooked within a couple of minutes and once the fire burns for a while, it burns much cleaner and throws a lot of heat.
