USO PHILOSOPHY CHAPTER FIRST IN NATION IMMEDIATE RELEASE - May 18, 1973 San Diego, California Acclaim was recently given the University of San Di.ego's Theta Chapter of Phi Sigma Ta u, the national honor society in phflosophy. The California Theta Chapter was selected the most active of the 64 chapters of the Society dur ing the 1972-73 academic year. Dr. Joseph Ghougassian, Faculty Adv isor of the Cal i:forni:a Chapter and Professor of Philosophy at the University explained that the award i s granted on a petition basis. Among the many programs the Theta Chapter 1 isted was the 1973 lecture series presented at USO entitled 11 Philosophy and Technology. 11 Phi Sigma Tau was founded in 1955 in order to encourage a professional spirit among all who have displayed ability in philosophy. According to the articl es of incorporation, this objective is accompHshed by 11 promotfng , the study of philosophy i.n colleges and universities through means for providing recognition for outstanding students, publishing a journal, and otherwise stimulating interest in the field on the college and university 1evel. 11 Honorary members of USD 1 s Theta Chapter include Dr. Patrick J. Hurle.v, Sister Emerine Glowienka, and Dr. John !{. Swanke, Professors of Pf1ilosophy at the University of San Diego. Seniors Mike Backlund, Thomas Barnett (Vice President), Thomas Baumann, Jacquelyn Landis (Secretary), and Williar. Letwin, and Juniors Jim Crossman, Brian Eagen, Jr., Daniel Griesgraber, Fernando Ramirez, and Mark Zecca (President) of USO are also active members. A reception is planned in recognition of the award on May 21. USO President Dr. Author Hughes will be honored at that time as an official member of the Chapter. jfjJ# SF/sb .
