USO PHILOSOPHY CHAPTER FIRST IN NATION IMMEDIATE RELEASE - May 18, 1973 San Diego, California Acclaim was recently given the University of San Di.ego's Theta Chapter of Phi Sigma Ta u, the national honor society in phflosophy. The California Theta Chapter was selected the most active of the 64 chapters of the Society dur ing the 1972-73 academic year. Dr. Joseph Ghougassian, Faculty Adv isor of the Cal i:forni:a Chapter and Professor of Philosophy at the University explained that the award i s granted on a petition basis. Among the many programs the Theta Chapter 1 isted was the 1973 lecture series presented at USO entitled 11 Philosophy and Technology. 11 Phi Sigma Tau was founded in 1955 in order to encourage a professional spirit among all who have displayed ability in philosophy. According to the articl es of incorporation, this objective is accompHshed by 11 promotfng , the study of philosophy i.n colleges and universities through means for providing recognition for outstanding students, publishing a journal, and otherwise stimulating interest in the field on the college and university 1evel. 11 Honorary members of USD 1 s Theta Chapter include Dr. Patrick J. Hurle.v, Sister Emerine Glowienka, and Dr. John !{. Swanke, Professors of Pf1ilosophy at the University of San Diego. Seniors Mike Backlund, Thomas Barnett (Vice President), Thomas Baumann, Jacquelyn Landis (Secretary), and Williar. Letwin, and Juniors Jim Crossman, Brian Eagen, Jr., Daniel Griesgraber, Fernando Ramirez, and Mark Zecca (President) of USO are also active members. College Resources 1 College Resources The Klingler College of Arts and Sciences is, by its very nature, the heart of Marquette University. We challenge students to explore many ways of understanding, doing and succeeding – regardless of the major they decide to pursue. We recognize that our students are faced with both challenges and opportunities. Academic Success Workshops The Klingler College of Arts and Sciences Advising Center sponsors a series of workshops to help first-year students succeed academically. These workshops are offered every term and focus on such topics as stress management, major exploration, study skills, test-taking techniques and time management. Advising Center The Klingler College of Arts and Sciences Advising Center (http://www.marquette.edu/as/advising_index.shtml/) is run by a team of professional academic advisers committed to serving students and helping them achieve success. This center offers comprehensive assistance for students' development and is open five days a week, all year long. Students are assigned an adviser and receive service and support in a wide variety of ways. The advisers can assist students in choosing a major, determining career and academic goals, developing study skills, selecting courses and creating a class schedule, preparing for graduate and professional school, and connecting them with other campus resources.

Phi Sigma Tau was founded at Muhlenberg College in 1930 as Alpha Kappa Alpha, with chapters at colleges in Maryland and Pennsylvania. It remained in this regional status until October of 1955, when it was incorporated as Phi Sigma Tau, a National Honor Society in Philosophy. Its essential purpose was and is to promote ties among philosophy departments in accredited institutions and students in philosophy nationally. Both on the local and national levels, Phi Sigma Tau considers its organization as instrumental: a means for developing and honoring academic excellence as well as philosophical interest. In addition to providing a means of awarding distinction to students having high scholarship and interest in philosophy, the Society also promotes interest in philosophy among the general collegiate public. Growth In 1955, Phi Sigma Tau included twelve chapters in Ohio, Tennessee, Maryland, Washington, D.C., New Mexico, California, and Louisiana. By 1958 ten additional chapters had been added, including those which had formerly constituted Alpha Kappa Alpha; and the date of the latter’s founding was taken as Phi Sigma Tau’s founding date. In 1958 the Society was admitted to full membership in the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS), and by 1969 its chapter network included 55 chapters in 32 states. The Society became international in 1991 with the installation of its first Canadian chapter; and, as of September, 2005, its chapter network includes over 200 chapters. The chapter here at Fairfield University was established in 1973 and it is currently the only chapter in Connecticut. Government The National Officers consist of President, Vice-President, and Executive Secretary.

Honor Societies Founded in Philadelphia by the Society of Jesus in 1851, Saint Joseph's University is one of just 153 schools nationwide with a Phi Beta Kappa chapter and AACSB business school accreditation. Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest and most prestigious undergraduate honors organization in the United States. Each school is required to present evidence that its educational program and academic environment "effectively quicken the mind and spirit of its students and faculty by encouraging the full development of their human capacities. Phi Beta Kappa requires that its member institutions give primary emphasis to curricula liberal in character and purpose and that courses distinguished by these qualities shall constitute the principal requirements for the bachelor's degree." AACSB International – The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business is the premier accrediting agency for bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree programs in business administration and accounting throughout the world. AACSB International is devoted to the promotion and improvement of higher education in business administration and management. Alpha Sigma Lambda is the academic honor society for College of Professional & Liberal Arts students. This national honor society was founded in 1945 at Northwestern University. Saint Joseph's University is also a member of the Alpha Epsilon Lambda honor society, the nation's only graduate interdisciplinary honor society. The society was founded for the purpose of recognizing the academic and leadership accomplishments of graduate and professional students. To become members, students must have a GPA of 3.85 or better and demonstrate capacity for leadership performance in the classroom and community.

Bucknell University 1 SUPERIOR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT The University recognizes superior academic achievement in a variety of ways. Among these are appointment to the dean’s list, receipt of the President’s Award for Distinguished Academic Achievement, the granting of degrees with distinction, graduation with honors, election to honorary and professional societies, and the awarding of prizes. Dean’s List Undergraduates who successfully complete no less than 3.0 course credits during the semester and who earn a semester grade point average of 3.50 or higher receive dean’s list honors for that semester. President’s Award for Distinguished Academic Achievement Rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors, and graduating seniors with a cumulative grade point average of 4.0 receive the President’s Award for Distinguished Academic Achievement. Degrees with Distinction Degrees with distinction are awarded to bachelor’s degree candidates who have taken 30 percent or more of the number of courses required for graduation in courses numbered above 199. Additional requirements for graduation with distinction are as follows: A degree Summa Cum Laude is awarded to a candidate who has achieved at the time of graduation a grade point average of 3.90, or better, and who has been in residence at Bucknell University for at least three years.
