Now, that responsibility falls on all of you, as the very fabric of our society is torn by an insidious darkness. However, in a galaxy far far away... It is my pleasure to welcome you all to Cornell International Affairs Conference (CIAC) 2017. My name is Jenniston Francis and I am very excited to serve as your chair for the simulation of the Star Wars JCC. I am currently a junior at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where I am majoring in finance in the Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management. My involvement with Model UN began much like your own: I was a delegate throughout high school, where I learned a lot from the debate and simulation in Model UN. This simulation will run as a joint crisis committee, with a particular focus on creating policies and responses that directly respond to both the actions of our rival committee and of the universe at large. These crisis committees offer a heightened delegate experience, revolving around fast-paced and dynamic debate. In order to be fully be prepared for this committee, please be prepared with exhaustive research, an open mind, and intellectual interest in debating and resolving the pressing issues you will be faced with.

The Clone Wars Sourcebook The Galactic Republic By Keith Kappel and Ryan Brooks THE REPUBLIC [Diplomacy +8] [Sense Motive +9] R The Galactic Republic has been the presiding governing body throughout the galaxy for nearly twenty-five millennia. It was comprised of hundreds of thousands of star systems and thousands of sentient races. Those who served the Republic faced many adversities over the millennia. The Clone Wars were no different. After a thousand years of peace and prosperity the Republic had become corrupt and decadent. There were those who came to realize this deterioration of Democracy and pledged to break away from the crumbling government. When this splitting came to all out war, the Republic was ready to answer their enemy’s call to arms with their Grand Army of the Republic. Below is a chronicling of those who remained loyal to the Republic and for what it stood. Palpatine – Supreme Chancellor of the Republic Palpatine began his political career on his home world of Naboo at approximately twenty years of age. Fresh out of Naboo’s public service, his early political life was mired with a series of dissatisfying electoral defeats at the hands of several opponents. For nearly a decade, Palpatine maintained a drab governmental portfolio until his first big break occurred when he was thirty years old. The incumbent senator of Naboo, Vidar Kim, was assassinated in a drive-by shooting, leaving Palpatine running unopposed. He was elected to serve as the next Senator of the Chommell Sector’s thirty-seven inhabited worlds. Taking his position on the Senate floor on Coruscant, Palpa- tine led a fairly meek political record.

  • Star Wars: Jedi Quest 04: the Master of Disguise
Star Wars Jedi Quest Book 4 The Master of Disguise by Jude Watson CHAPTER ONE Civil war had raged on the planet Haariden for ten years, and even the ground showed the scars. It was pockmarked with deep holes left by laser cannonfire and grenade mortars. Ion mines had blown hip-deep craters into the roads. Along the sides of the pitted road, blackened fields burned down to stubble. The Jedi had heard the explosions from cannonfire all afternoon, echoing off the bare hills. The battle was twenty kilometers away. The wind tore across the fields and whipped up the dirt on the road. It brought the smell of smoke and burning. The gritty sand and ash settled in the Jedi's hair and clothes. It was cold. A watery sun hid behind clouds stacked in thick, gray layers. To Anakin Skywalker, it looked like something out of his nightmares. Visions of a world of devastation, where a cold wind numbed his face and fingers, and he trudged endlessly without arriving at his destination. He gave no outward sign of fatigue or discomfort, however. He was training to be a Jedi, and being a Jedi was all about focus. A Jedi did not notice the pelting grit, the razor- edge of the wind. A Jedi did not flinch when a proton torpedo's blast split the air. A Jedi focused on the mission. But Anakin was not yet a Jedi Knight, merely a Padawan. So though his pace never flagged, his mind kept slipping away to brood on his own discomfort.

  • Race, Empire, and Orientalism in Star Wars: the Clone Wars
“Wars Do Not Make One Great”: Race, Empire, and Orientalism in Star Wars: The Clone Wars by Mohammed Shakibnia A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Arts in Political Science and Philosophy (Honors Scholar) Presented June 1st, 2020 Commencement June 2021 1 2 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Mohammed Shakibnia for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate Arts in Political Science and Philosophy presented on June 1, 2020. Title: “Wars Do Not Make One Great”: Race, Empire, and Orientalism in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Joseph Orosco This project explores how science fiction can be used to examine social justice issues in our contemporary world. I will explore two case studies from the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series through a framework of race, empire, and orientalism. Walidah Imarisha’s notion of “visionary fiction” is utilized as a lens to explore how speculative fiction can serve as a tool to understand critical real world issues, and how The Clone Wars allows audiences to envision more just futures. These case studies surround the oppression faced by alien communities in The Clone Wars and are connected to issues of empire and racial inequality experienced by Muslims and Black people in the United States. The first case study uses Edward Said’s Orientalism as a framework to discuss the roots of Islamophobia, empire, the “clash of civilizations”. I connect Said’s work to the treatment of the Talz, an indigenous alien race in The Clone Wars, who face settler-colonial violence and ethnic cleansing from the Pantorans, a group represented by the Republic.
