The Star Wars Timeline Gold: Legends Clone Wars Supplement 1 THE STAR WARS TIMELINE GOLD The Old Republic. The Galactic Empire. The New Republic. What might have been. Every legend has its historian. After the release of Attack of the Clones in 2002, Lucasfilm’s various fictional licensees, including Del Rey, LucasArts, Dark Horse Comics, and others, produced a stunningly detailed three-year saga of the Clone Wars that brought us directly up to the opening of Revenge of the Sith in theaters in 2005. It became one of the most well-orchestrated periods in all of Star Wars: Legends publishing. 2008 changed all of that, then 2014 shifted things yet again. The Clone Wars materials that were produced from 2002 – 2008 were part of the “Official Continuity” (now Legends Continuity) of C-Canon that was meant to expand upon the G-Canon films. When The Clone Wars launched as a multimedia project in 2008, centered around a new film and television series with the direct involvement of George Lucas, the era of the Clone Wars was thrown into disarray by a new level of canonicity, T-Canon, and numerous new assertions. Anakin became a Jedi Knight soon (perhaps as soon as one month) after the Battle of Geonosis, rather than 2.5 years after Attack of the Clones. Anakin had his scar before the Battle of Christophsis, said to be a few months after Geonosis, rather than getting it just after his knighting at 2.5 years after Geonosis. Anakin now had a Padawan, Ahsoka Tano, that no one had ever heard of before. All of this was well and good, in a sense, as it came from George Lucas’ own ideas, which made it a more definitive version of the saga as its creator envisioned it. However, the more materials that were released with regard to The Clone Wars, the more the previous Clone Wars era materials were thrown into continuity chaos, since the “Official Continuity” timeline, which we now know as the Star Wars: Legends timeline, was, according to Lucasfilm, supposed to include both the T-Canon and C-Canon Clone Wars tales somehow. Thus, I had to make a decision on how to handle these growing contradictions. Rather than trying to shoehorn materials that simply do not naturally fit together into one chronology, making an even bigger mess of things, I chose to remove the Clone Wars era from the Legends Timeline documents altogether. Here, in this supplemental document, you will find two different versions of the events of the Clone Wars. The first is the original Clone Wars saga, as produced between 2002 and 2008 (now considered “Legends”), along with what few new events might have been noted from that era since 2008 in publications not directly related to the T-Canon cartoon series. The second timeline included in this document is the newer Clone Wars saga, based around the materials from The Clone Wars series (T-Canon) and its spinoffs (considered C-Canon and thus Legends), produced from 2008 onward, focusing primarily on the cartoon series itself (2008 – 2014). This timeline uses the official order of episodes from The Clone Wars Episode Guide by Jason Fry (which was tweaked a bit from what appeared first in the Ultimate Visual Guide: Updated and Expanded by Ryder Windham). Further materials related to the cartoon series (such as The Clone Wars Digest) are in a “best guess” order for now. The Star Wars Timeline Gold: Legends Clone Wars Supplement 2 In 2014, things shifted again, however, in a way not reflected in this document. With the announcement that all previous Official Continuity material was being considered to be what amounts to an alternate timeline, so that only the live action films and The Clone Wars could form the basis of a new, growing canon of new novels, comics, games, etc., even novels, comics, and games that were created as direct tie-ins to the cartoon series were dumped into the Legends category. Thus, what you see in this document are the two versions of the Clone Wars era that were presented that are supposed to be part of the timeline followed by the Legends Continuity, which includes Expanded Universe materials but must also include The Clone Wars. The saga as it exists by the newer, 2014 definition of “canon,” which does not include any The Clone Wars materials except the animated adventures themselves (and direct adaptations of unproduced scripts, such as Son of Dathomir), is part of the Story Group Canon Timeline document, which is a separate file from this one. This file deals only with events as depicted in the Star Wars: Legends alternate reality. To make this all the more frustrating, as of May 2013, Leland Chee has stated that there are no plans to sort out the contradictory Clone Wars material into a coherent timeline, presumably because Lucasfilm was gearing up for the announcement made in April 2014 that relegated all of this material, aside from the actual TCW cartoon, into the realm of Legends. Either way, no official order for this material would appear to be forthcoming anytime soon, but I hope these two timelines will serve as your guide to the growth of the Legends saga in both of its Clone Wars forms, as presented in its two primary eras of release (2002 – 2008, then 2008 – 2015). To shoehorn them together without any form of official information would simply be fan-supposition, and I’m not at all inclined to add to the Clone Wars era confusion out there, even if it means that this era’s conflicting storylines, at least in the Legends timeline, will never, ever be sorted out.
