Mary Robb, 3rd May, 2012 ii ABSTRACT This thesis considers the musical response of the American composer, Miriam Gideon to political events during the McCarthy era. It examines the interrelationships between politics, society and culture and considers how these are reflected in two works, Epitaphs from Robert Burns (1952) and Altered Steps to Altered States (1953) that Gideon composed during this period. Specifically, this thesis focuses on Gideon’s transition from teaching and composing music within an academic setting to preparing for life in a musical world, without support from mainstream academic institutions. Following the Introduction, Chapter 2 documents the rise of anti-communist practices on campus at Brooklyn College and City College, New York City where Miriam Gideon held music teaching posts. It reconstructs the personal events that led to the loss of both of these appointments and examines how and why this occurred. It is argued that Gideon entered a period of ‘inner exile,’ and this concept and its consequences for Gideon are explored in Chapter 3. An examination of her private diaries demonstrates that the effects of the McCarthy era were not only physical, but also psychological and social. Chapters 4-6 consider Gideon’s music through the perspective of inner exile and aim to show that the music that she wrote was a reflection of her experiences. Gideon’s return to academia in 1955 and her rehabilitation back into the academy are discussed in Chapter 7. A complete list of Gideon’s compositional output is included and is organised chronologically, alphabetically and by genre. This thesis examines new documents not previously available to scholars, and includes interviews conducted by the author with Gideon’s former students and colleagues. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I am deeply indebted to my academic advisers Professor Peter Nelson and Dr. Elaine Kelly in the music department at the University of Edinburgh who supervised and oversaw the direction of this thesis. Since the publication of John Rawls’ magnum opus A Theory of Justice in 1971, there has been a significant resurgence of philosophical work in the tradition of contractarianism. The distinguished bourgeois political philosopher Robert Nozick has argued that A Theory of Justice is one of the most important works in political philosophy since the writings of John Stuart Mill. “Political philosophers,” Nozick concludes, “now must either work within Rawls’ theory or explain why.”1 It is not far from the truth that Rawls single-handedly not only gave life to analytical political philosophy, but also resuscitated contractarianism, a philosophical tradition that — in many respects — had been lying dormant in a philosophical coma. In fact, social contract theory has become the hegemonic tradition in liberal social and political philosophy. Hisama Excerpt More information 1 CULTUAL ANALYSIS AND POST-TONAL MUSIC Given the vast, marvelous repertoire of feminist approaches to literary analysis introduced over the past two decades, a music theorist interested in bringing femi- nist thought to a project of analyzing music by women might do well to look first to literary theory. One potentially useful study is Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar’s landmark work The Madwoman in the Attic, which asserts that nineteenth-century writing by women constitutes a literary tradition separate and distinct from the writing of men and argues more specifically that writings of women, including Austen, Shelley, and Dickinson, share common themes of alienation and enclo- sure.1 Some feminist theorists have claimed that a distinctive female tradition exists also in modernist literature; Jan Montefiore, for example, asserts that in autobio- graphical writings of the 1930s, male modernists tended to portray their experi- ences as universal in contrast to female modernists who tended to represent their experiences as marginal.2 But because of the singular nature of the modernist, post-tonal musical idiom, an analytical project intended to explore whether a distinctive female tradition indeed exists in music immediately runs aground. Unlike tonal compositions, which draw their structural principles from a more or less unified compositional language, post- tonal works are constructed according to highly individualized schemes whose meaning and coherence derive from their internal structure rather than from their relation to a body of works.

Informal arrangements with music teachers in town constituted the only opportunities for students' musical instruction. All lessons were of an extra-curricular nature and no college credit was given. The official college publications illustrated the gradual recognition of music as a field of study but not as a college subject until the final establishment of a music department which occurred in 1894. In the Catalogue for 1874-75 (p.[4]), Georgia B. Gaylord and Professor J.W. Jameson (resigned) were listed as Instructors of Music among the college faculty but no courses in music were mentioned. The Bulletin for 1880-81 provided the following description of its music program: INSTRUCTION IN MUSIC. The Trustees have made favorable terms for such students of the College as wish to obtain a thorough education in music under the tuition of Professor H.
