Description Imported from USA. Full description not available. The book is about a new mystery. Perfect for fans of this kind of novel. It is a text that can't be read on it's own, in my view. Read more Same as the others Another good read in the Mary Russell series. As well written and compelling as the other books in the Mary Russell series. This book spends a lot of time in Mrs Hudson's past so has a slightly different flavour but was very enjoyable. And this is quite a tale! But, it just isn't what I signed on to read. I am a fan of her series and enjoyed reading her inspired novels about Sherlock Holmes and his younger, intriguing wife. I didn't buy this book to read about Mrs. Hudson and her dark past! My quibble is not with King's writing, but more with the story she chose to tell. When I choose The Murder of Mary Russell: A Novel of Suspense Featuring Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes book in a series it comes with certain expectations:. NOT this book. It was clever, I'll grant you that. But, it was not the Sherlockian experience I was seeking, and Mary Russell plays a very minor role in this story. It's all about Mrs. Hudson, and fascinating as the story may be, I was annoyed from the first chapter and never got over it. A good read. Sherlock and Mary Russell and so much more enjoyable than Sherlock and Watson! The great series continues - but is this the last one? This one is no exception. King's The Murder of Mary Russell: A Novel of Suspense Featuring Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes to invent dialogue that lives up to Conan Doyle is quite astounding. I would recommend this book to, not only Sherlock Holmes fans but to anyone who loves a great detective story. Interweaving of narratives from different perspectives and at different The Murder of Mary Russell: A Novel of Suspense Featuring Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes, all brought together neatly at the end - very readable. Mrs Hudson's past catches up with them. This is about Mrs Hudson, her back story and how this catches up with her eventually, more than it is about Holmes and Russell. However, it's a good read in this series and I enjoyed it. Pretty deep stuff, but The Murder of Mary Russell: A Novel of Suspense Featuring Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes usual a "can't put down" book. Love it. Another great story in this series from Laurie King. I love these books As with all this author's books, once you start reading you can't put it down. Very enjoyable. The item arrived, well packaged, through the letterbox and ahead of time. The story had a good premise, but too many things rendered it clumsy. Once past the very beginning where Mary is confronted by Samuel, the story slows down to a fairly dull pace. There is little to no suspense since, despite the title, we know Mary has not been killed. She is the main , after all, and if one has read Ms. King's short stories, the reader is well aware Mary lives into old age. Also, I'm not a fan of books which jump back and forth between time periods and the bias held true here. I might have enjoyed the story better if, after the opening, we stuck completely with Mrs. Hudson's past life before returning to the present problem. Every time I had just immersed myself in Clarissa Hudson's exploits, I was jarred out of the story by a page or two describing Mary's escapades. Unfortunately, at this point, repetition then becomes a problem. Key points in Mrs. Hudson's life story are reiterated, ad nauseam in some instances. Retold to Mary by Holmes or Billy. Or to Hugh by Mrs. Or to Holmes by an outside party. Another problem occurred at the very end. Once a plan of action has been decided upon and Billy leaves with Mrs. Hudson, Mary and Holmes are reviewing their attempt to hustle Mrs. Hudson away from danger. The whole scenario with Mary and Samuel, however, isn't even mentioned. Inspector LeStrade is not a stupid man. Won't he wonder where all the blood came from during the attack on Mary? I hardly think he'd believe so much came from the cut on her arm. And just what will they tell him happened to Samuel, the attacker? What story will suffice? Are they going to say Mary killed the man in self-defense which is the truth? If so, why did they hide the body? A huge plot point is brushed over, in my opinion. All this is not to say I didn't enjoy a look into Mrs. Hudson's background. I just think the story could have been crafted in a more interesting manner. The once act which changes my view of her a bit is not either of the murders she committed. The first, her father, was an act of self-defense wherein she saved the lives of Holmes and Billy. And even though killing Hugh was a premeditated act, my sympathy remained with Mrs. Leaving her infant child with her sister, however, a woman Clarissa Hudson knew was cruel and selfish was mind-boggling. I don't care how nice Alicia's husband was, I can't believe Clarissa could so easily leave her child to endure a lifetime of her sister's care. But then, she always did seem to have a better connection with Billy which also proves a lack of maternal instinct on her part is bunk. Now, my favorite secondary character will no longer be a mainstay in these books. King may as well have killed Mrs. Hudson off unless she has plans to bring the character back into the future stories somehow. Hudson was a nice balance of hominess and normalcy to the frenetic pace of Russell and Holmes' lives and I will miss her. I have liked most of the series so far, finding the books refreshing, erudite and entertaining, but when the plot lost Mary Russell I found I was sort of losing the will to live! I ploughed on through a lot more chapters, encountering disparate and disreputable characters, but the trouble was nothing much happened, and I suddenly wondered why I was bothering. I love Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes Hudson, about whom I knew little. Although, as the title suggests, Mary is in peril from early on, Clara—or Clarissa, as she was originally, according to this story—Hudson definitely takes over the story. King does a fantastic job of developing her as a character and inventing a complex backstory for her, including detailed descriptions of her parents, her sister, her early life, and how she became involved with Holmes. The writing is wonderfully detailed. Tens of thousands of tight little knots had gone into its making, and a great deal of thought…. How many hours had this taken him? What had been going on all around him while he worked, what conversations, what kinds of men at his side? Holding it to her face, she could smell the sea and the smouldering lamps, and the tobacco the others had smoked while he worked. She could smell his life, far away. Hudson is on stage, which fortunately is most of the time. Not what I expected, but still a desirable read. I like a bit more Mary Russell. This product is currently out of stock. Similar Products.
