“We need to show kindness to the people around us. We need to let people know we’re BIG fans of them—with the words we say and the things we do. There’s an important reason why we should do that, which is what we’ll find in our Bible story today. But before we get into that, let’s kick things off with a Cheer-A-Thon!

SLIDE: CHEER-A-THON

“I’ll have one person from each small group come up and grab something out of this box. Then each small group will make up an epic cheer about their object. I’ll give you one minute to come up with your cheer together, then you’ll perform it. The best cheer, according to me, will win!

“Let me give you an example. (Make a cheerleader pose.) Ready? Okay!

Pull the banana from the box and hold it up.

“Banana! Banana! You are the MAN-a! Banana! Banana! I’m a big FAN-a! YEAH!

Do some cheerleader kicks. Put the banana back in the box.

“How was that? Let’s see if you can do better. Everyone get together with your small group if you aren’t already. Leaders, please choose one person from your group to come up here and grab an object.

Let one kid per group pick an object from the box, then have them go back to their small group.

“You have one minute to come up with your cheer. Ready? Go!

AUDIO: SPORTS MUSIC (SUGGESTION: “GET READY FOR THIS (ORCHESTRAL MIX)” BY ) OPTIONAL VIDEO (MEDIA PACKAGE): COUNTDOWN (60-SECOND VERSION)

Start a 60-second timer on your phone.

“Okay, everyone, stop! Let’s see what you’ve got.

Give each small group a chance to do their cheer. If the words are hard to understand since they haven’t practiced, it’s fine to have them do it again. Encourage each group, and after all groups have gone, choose one as the champion.

Collect the objects. Let the kids who were handling them wipe or wash their hands before they return to their seats.

BIBLE STORY SLIDE: THEME BACKGROUND

Storyteller enters as Worship Leaders exit.

SETTING UP THE STORY STORYTELLER: “Hey, everyone! This month is all about kindness. [Host’s name] told us what kindness is all about.

SLIDE: LIFE APP

“Kindness is showing others they are valuable by how you treat them.

“It’s really important for us to show kindness to the people around us . . . but that’s not always easy, is it? It helps if we can remember where our kindness comes from in the first place.

SLIDE: THEME BACKGROUND

Host enters.

HOST: “[Storyteller’s name]—I’m sorry to interrupt, but I’ve got the PERFECT way to illustrate what you mean.”

STORYTELLER: “Oh! Okay, [Host’s name]. That sounds great. What did you have in mind?”

HOST: “Picture this: foam finger puppet theater!

Host crouches down below the counter-height table (hidden by the tablecloth). He picks up the two foam fingers and holds them above the table.

(bouncing the foam fingers) “We’re both number one! We’re both number one!”

STORYTELLER: “Wow—that’s very creative! Sure, we’ll give it a try.”

NOT-SO-KIND EXAMPLES STORYTELLER: (to audience) “See if this situation sounds familiar to you. Maybe you play a sport, like soccer, and there’s a kid who’s always really mean to you.

Storyteller picks up the soccer ball from the prop box then sets it on the table between the two foam fingers.

Host reads from the script under the table. The script should be hung up and lit, so that he can easily read the dialogue out loud.

As he reads the dialogue, he can make the two foam fingers pass the soccer ball back and forth on the table.

HOST (as foam finger #1 to foam finger #2): “Hey, foam head! How’d you get to be such a foam head?”

STORYTELLER: (to foam finger #1) “Ummmm . . . not cool, Mr. Foam Finger. Anyway, aren’t YOU made of foam, too?

Host makes the foam finger nod.

(to audience, referencing foam finger #2) “How do you think our friend over here feels about that? Do you think he wants to be kind back? (Pause for response.)

(to the foam fingers) “Oh—and by the way, it’s soccer. No hands.

Storyteller puts the soccer ball back in the box and sets the house on the table.

(to audience) “What if you’re hanging out with some friends in your neighborhood or apartment complex . . . and one kid says that he wants to hang out with someone else instead of you?”

HOST (as foam finger #1 to foam finger #2): “Hey, foam head! I don’t want to hang out with you. You know why? Because you’re a foam head.”

STORYTELLER: (to foam finger #1, in disbelief) “Seriously? Come on, foam finger. And may I remind you that you are also made of foam?

(to audience, referencing foam finger #2) “I would be really upset if someone didn’t want to hang out with me. It would be hard to show them kindness.

Storyteller puts the house back in the box. Pulls out the “LITTLE BRO” shirt and attaches it to foam finger #1.

“All right. One more example. It could even be your brother or sister who just seems to bug you all the time.”

HOST (as foam finger #1 to foam finger #2): (annoyingly) “Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!”

HOST (as foam finger #2 to foam finger #1): (Exasperated) “WHAT?”

HOST (as foam finger #1 to foam finger #2): “You’re a foam face.”

STORYTELLER: (face palm) “Okay, okay. No one is a foam face. That’s just rude.

(Referencing foam finger #2) “It seems like it would be really hard for our guy over here to be kind to his friend—or his little brother—in any of those situations. It would be a lot easier for him to say something mean back. But maybe it would help if we think about where kindness really comes from.”

WHY BE KIND? STORYTELLER: “We know what kindness looks like because we know how kind GOD has been to US. Take a look at what the apostle Paul wrote in the book of Ephesians. This was part of a letter Paul wrote to the people in the church in the town of Ephesus.

SLIDE: EPHESIANS 4:32

Open the Bible to Ephesians 4:32 (NIrV) and read.

“Be kind and tender to one another. Forgive one another, just as God forgave you because of what Christ has done.

“Can you give that a try, foam fingers?”

Host makes the foam fingers “read the screen.”

HOST (as the foam fingers): “Be kind and tender to one another. Forgive one another, just as God forgave you because of what Christ has done.”

STORYTELLER: “Nice job. You see, Paul wanted the Ephesians to remember the amazing example of kindness we have in Jesus. God loves us so much that He sent Jesus FOR us. Jesus died on the cross so that we could be forgiven for the things we’ve done wrong. He showed once and for all how valuable we are to Him. He gave us the greatest example of kindness the world has ever known!

“Because of that, we should be kind to one another. We should follow God’s example that He gave us in Jesus.”

SLIDE: THEME BACKGROUND

LET’S BE KIND STORYTELLER: “There are lots of ways we can show kindness.

Storyteller takes the “LITTLE BRO” shirt off foam finger #1 and puts the soccer ball on the table.

Host makes the foam fingers pass the ball back and forth.

“Remember our soccer example, when one teammate was really mean to the other? (to foam finger #2) Mr. Foam Finger, you can ask him not to talk to you that way. Remind him that you’re on the same team, and tell him that you want to be friends instead.

(to the foam fingers) “High five!

Host makes the foam fingers “high five.”

Storyteller puts the soccer ball back in the box and sets the house on the table.

“You can forgive your friend from the neighborhood, instead of saying something mean back. After all, maybe it was just a misunderstanding.

(to the foam fingers) “Fist bump!

Host makes the foam fingers “fist bump.”

25 MINUTES

Storyteller puts the house back in the box and puts the “LITTLE BRO” shirt back on foam finger #1.

“You can stop what you’re doing and ask your little brother to do something you know HE likes to do. Then he won’t keep pestering you . . . and you might even have some fun while you’re at it.

(to the foam fingers) “Let me see you point. Who’s awesome? YOU’RE awesome!

Host makes the foam fingers point at each other.

“You can be a kindness super fan. You can show others they’re valuable when you [Basic Truth] treat them the way you want to be treated. That’s not always easy . . . but you can make the first move when you choose to be kind.

“Let’s give [Host’s name] a hand for giving us such great examples. [Host’s name], that was really fun!”

Host bows and exits.

WRAPPING UP THE STORY STORYTELLER: “It was pretty silly to act out those scenarios with foam fingers. But I bet all of you have been in situations before when it was really hard to be kind to someone.

“It’s important to remember that you don’t have to let someone be mean to you. If you have a problem with someone that’s not getting better, ask an adult for help. You can’t control how someone else will act. But you CAN control how YOU act. Instead of acting the same way back, you can decide to show kindness.

“It all starts when you remember WHY you should be kind in the first place.

SLIDE: BOTTOM LINE

“Be kind to others because God is kind to you.

“When you don’t feel like being kind, you can ask God for help. Think about how kind God was to you when He sent Jesus for you. That will help you remember to show kindness, even when it’s difficult. Let’s ask God for help right now.”

SLIDE: THEME BACKGROUND

PRAY STORYTELLER: “God, thank You for this important reminder of why we should treat others with kindness. You showed kindness to us when You sent Jesus to be our Savior! Please help us follow Your example and show Your love to the people around us. Help us use our words and actions to show them how valuable they are—even when it’s difficult. We love You, and we ask these things in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

CLOSER Host enters as Storyteller exits.

HOST: “It’s so important for us to show kindness. Even when it’s tough. Even when people don’t really deserve it. Even in those times, we can choose to be kind with God’s help! After all, God Himself gave us the best-ever example of kindness.

SLIDE: BOTTOM LINE

“Be kind to others because God is kind to you.

“God sent Jesus to be our Savior. Because of what Jesus did on the cross, we know that God will forgive us for every time we mess up. That’s why we can always trust God to show us kindness. And we can choose every day to show His kindness to other people.

“We have a really cool memory verse this month that comes from another of Paul’s letters, Colossians. It’s Colossians 3:12.

SLIDE: MEMORY VERSE

“You are God’s chosen people. You are holy and dearly loved. So put on tender mercy and kindness as if they were your clothes. Don’t be proud. Be gentle and patient. (Colossians 3:12, NIrV)

“Did you hear that? ‘Put on tender mercy and kindness as if they were your clothes’! You have to CHOOSE to put on kindness. You can choose the way you’re going to treat other people, every day. You can choose to [Basic Truth] treat others the way you want to be treated. You can do that when you remember how kind God has been to you.

“So, when you’re having a hard time with someone, you don’t have to wait for them to apologize. You can make the first move! Treat them with kindness, just like God has shown you. Choose to be kind, even when you don’t want to be. Let’s head to our small groups and talk about different ways we can show kindness!”

Dismiss kids to their small groups.
