1 Introduction & Guide Overview

f you have not yet installed your printer driver, you should do so before continuing. Turn to the chapter entitled "Installing the HP I DesignJet PostScript Drivers for Macintosh" for information. If you have just installed your printer driver, • first, read the sections below which interest you, then • follow the instructions in the chapter titled, "Choosing your driver setup instructions" starting on page 7.

Which driver do I have? If you are running .0 or higher without QuickDraw GX, the PSPrinter 8.3.1 was installed. If you are running System 7.5 or higher with QuickDraw GX (enabled or disabled), the installation software will have copied two drivers to your system. Depending on the state of the QuickDraw GX entension, your system will make the most appropriate driver available - with the GX extension enabled, this will be the DesignJet 2500CP v1.0 driver, with GX disabled, PSPrinter 8.3.1

I have an HP DesignJet! - Why do I have an PSPrinter driver? Your system does not have the QuickDraw GX Extension installed, the instal- lation software chose the driver most suitable for your system. The PSPrinter driver can be used with several of the HP DesignJet series. Furthermore, using the PSPrinter driver along with the correct PPD files ensures document porta- bility across your Hewlett-Packard printers and saves space in your System folder by requiring only one driver.

Introduction 2

What is the HP DesignJet Printing Guide for Macintosh? This HP DesignJet Printing Guide for Macintosh gives you information about: • Selecting and configuring your printer in the Chooser. • Selecting a PPD for your printer, if necessary. • The HP LaserJet Utility. • Troubleshooting printing problems.

Do I need to read all of this guide?

Most probably not.

Once you have read and understood the following chapter "Choosing your driver setup instructions" you can then concentrate on the sections which apply to the driver which was installed on your system. This guide covers all three types of driver interface provided by the "HP DesignJet 2500CP PostScript Drivers for Macintosh". Briefly, these are: Non-QDGX - seen when you do not have the QuickDraw GX extension, or it is installed but disabled. QDGX Old style - seen when your application was not written to use the QuickDraw GX extension, but you have the QuickDraw GX extension installed and it is enabled. QDGX Aware - seen when your application was written to use the Quick- Draw GX extension and it is enabled. Accordingly, you only need to refer to the sections of this guide which apply to the driver interface which is appropriate for your system and applications. The naming of the chapters in this guide indicate which driver interface they refer to.

3 How do I access the on-line information? There are several ways to access the on-line guide for your driver, depending on the dialog box you are viewing, you can click on the “?” icon or help button. Additionally, if your driver was installed correctly, and your HP DesignJet printer is your currently selected printer, you will see an entry in the ‘Apple’ menu which is the title of an on-line guide for a HP DesignJet driver. If you click on this entry, the opening window of the on-line information will be displayed on your screen. By following the basic instructions in this opening window you will be able to see topics which deal with the driver's features and options.

What can the driver help me to do? The driver for your HP DesignJet 2500CP printer contains a powerful set of features which allow you to make the best use of its printing capabilities. The following list highlights the driver’s major features: • Autoscale your drawing to fit a different page size. • Make your own custom page size. • Print colors emulating: SWOP, Euroscale, Toyo color standards. • Request pen ink levels status information. • Check printer’s current media setting. • Reduce media waste by rotating your drawing. • Support of Apple ColorSync 2.0 (Read ‘Using Color’ to know more). • Multiple copies while only processing your image once.

Information which will help you to use these features is contained in the on-line guide, see previous section for instructions on how to access it.

Note: If your printer is on a network, find out from your network administrator (or the person who set up your Macintosh): which printer you can use, which AppleTalk zone it's in (if your network has zones), and what its name is (every printer on a network has its own name). The procedure to complete the installation is given below.

1. You should have already opened the Chooser from the Apple menu.

2. Select the PSPrinter icon. If the PSPrinter icon doesn't appear in the Chooser, the printer driver is not correctly loaded. Reload your printing software by inserting the HP DesignJet 2500CP PostScript Drivers for Macintosh disk into your disk drive, double-clicking the installer icon, and following the instructions on your screen.

3. If applicable, select the zone in the AppleTalk Zones box where your printer is located. If your network is linked to other networks, the AppleTalk Zones box appears in the bottom-left area of the Chooser. Zones are groups of users, machines, and devices. They can be grouped by physical location (for example, Zone A may contain all the printers on the network in building A), but may also be grouped by logical zones (for example, all printers used by the finance department). 4. Select the name of your printer in the box. If your printer's name is the only one listed in the box, you must still click on its name to select it. Your printer will remain selected until you choose a different printer with the Chooser. If the printer's name does not appear in the box, see Chapter 11. Trouble- shooting on page 27 for problem-solving information.

5. Click Setup. The printer driver will attempt to communicate with the selected printer to obtain information needed for PPD selection and driver configuration. During this process, a status dialog box provides information and the oppor- tunity to cancel the process if needed. If the setup process is successful, you are returned directly to the Chooser, see next page, and an icon appears next to the selected printer. The icon indi- cates that the printer has been configured successfully.

11

However, if the driver was unable to get information from the selected printer (for example, the printer is connected to a print spooler that does not provide two-way communication), you are asked to select an appro- priate PPD file and indicate which optional features have been installed in your printer. For more information about manually configuring your printer, see Chapter 4. Non-QDGX: Manually configuring your printer on page 13.

6. Choose Background Printing On or Off. We recommend turning background printing on. If background printing is turned off when you send a print job to the printer, status messages appear on your screen and you will have to wait until the messages clear before continuing your work. If background printing is turned on, the messages are redirected to the background and you can continue working while the printer is printing your job.

7. To exit the Chooser, click the Close box in the upper-left corner. If you want to manually configure options for your printer you are recom- mended to read Chapter 4. Non-QDGX: Manually configuring your printer on page 13. If not, you are now ready to create and print docu- ments using your HP DesignJet printer. For more information about the

The printer driver will attempt to communicate with the selected printer to obtain information needed for PPD selection and driver configuration. During this process, a status dialog box provides information and the oppor- tunity to cancel the process if needed. If the setup procedure is successful, go to step 9.

4. If you are unable to set up your printer automatically, click Select PPD.... in the Setup dialog box. Note: A PPD (PostScript Printer Description) contains a description of your printer's features. The driver uses this information to give you control of these features. You need to select the HP DesignJet 2500CP PPD.

5. In the dialog box, select ‘HP DJ 2500.PPD’ and click Select. If the PPD you want is not listed, choose one of the following options: • Select a PPD for a printer with similar features to your own. • Search for a PPD in another location. • Re-install the driver. 6. In the Setup dialog box, click Configure. 7. In the dialog box, specify the options you have installed in your printer and click OK. 8. To view information about your printer, click on Printer Info in the Setup dialog box.

'Printer Info' notes: • Color Supported - The printer information available is dependent on your printer's current settings. For example, if the front panel Color/Mono setting is set to Mono the 'Color Supported' item will indicate 'No'. • Total Memory Installed - The amount stated here will be the total memory installed for PostScript. The amount will be less than the total RAM memory installed in your printer because a portion of memory is reserved for other tasks done in the printer. The hard disk capacity is not included. • Total Memory Available - This value can be ignored, it represents only a part of the installed printer RAM memory.

9. To close the Setup dialog box, click OK. 10. To close the Chooser, click the close box in the upper-left corner.

17 Chapter 5. Non-QDGX: Using the PSPrinter 8.3.1 Driver

hen using the PSPrinter 8.3.1 driver, you should be aware of the W following situations:

• The PSPrinter 8.3.1 driver allows some printers to print using a larger image- able print area on the page. If your documents were originally formatted for such a printer, you may find that text in some documents reflows or is clipped to fit the new imageable area. • Printing multiple documents with the Finder may not work if the documents have been created by different application programs. • With some graphics applications, the cover page may not be printed at the end of a multi-page document. If this is the case, select the Before Document cover page option.

“Virtual Printer” option of the PSPrinter 8.3.1 Driver The PSPrinter 8.3.1driver lets you print to a “Virtual Printer”. In this way you don’t need to have a “physical” printer available when you use the driver. You can create a PostScript file by sending it to a “Virtual Printer”. To use this, select Virtual Printer from the “Type:” drop-down list in the Chooser, and then configure it by selecting a PPD.

Using the PSPrinter 8.3.1 Driver with Popular Application Programs Some applications do not yet take advantage of the PSPrinter 8.3.1 driver features, or they have small incompatibilities that result in printing problems. If you experience problems with a program, contact the publisher of the program. In some cases, a newer version of the program may be available that will resolve your problems. Some information which is specific to certain applications is contained in a document that came with your printer. The applications that it details are listed on its front page.

HP DesignJet Printing Guide Chapter 5. Non-QDGX: Using the PSPrinter 8.3.1 Driver 18

Using the PSPrinter 8.3.1 Driver with Spoolers • If a Novell spooler rejects a printing connection due to insufficient user priv- ileges (queue security option turned on) or an internal error, the driver may hang indefinitely. • Netware 3.11 may cause the driver to download fonts more often than neces- sary, resulting in poor printing performance. • Versions of Netware prior to 4.0 do not support PSPrinter's Auto Setup capa- bility. In these environments, manually select the appropriate PPD for your printer. For more information, see step 4 on page 14.

19 Chapter 6. QDGX: Creating your Desktop Printer

lease read this entire chapter before selecting your printer in the Chooser. You may already know how to use the Chooser; however, P there are additional steps to follow in order to set up your printer.

In order to complete the driver setup process, you must first successfully install the HP DesignJet 2500CP PostScript Drivers for Macintosh software for your HP DesignJet printer, see Installing the driver software is a very simple task: Before you print a document, you must create a desktop printer (DTP). Note: If your printer is on a network, find out from your network administrator (or the person who set up your Macintosh) which printer you can use, which AppleTalk zone it's in (if your network has zones*), and what its name is (every printer on a network has its own name). If your network is linked to other networks, the “AppleTalk Zones” box appears in the bottom-left area of the Chooser. *Zones are groups of users, machines, and devices. They can be grouped by physical location (for example, Zone A may contain all the printers on the network in building A), but may also be grouped by logical zones (for example, all printers used in the finance department). 1. You should have already opened the Chooser from the Apple menu. 2. Select the icon representing your printer.

Chapter 9. Working with color

Driver’s color features Your HP DesignJet 2500CP PostScript driver contains a rich set of features to help you to manage your printed colors. The on-line guide for the driver contains descriptions about the uses of these settings. If you would like to know how these settings combine to help you achieve the best printed output, you are recommended to read the following section.

Getting the best from the “Color Options” for your pictures. For most cases you are recommended to use the following set of options:- Print: PostScript Color Matching (default) Printer Profile: Printer Default (default) Color Matching System: SWOP Ink Emulation Halftoning: Cluster (default) Lightness: 0% No Change (default)

These settings have been chosen to help you get the “best results” from your HP DesignJet 2500CP. The best results being a balance between choice of color gamut, color space, color contrast, ink volume* and data processing time. *Note that controlling the ink volume is an important factor in determining print quality, and helping you to avoid media-saturation (cockle). Changes to the above driver settings to disable the color management system should only be done if you are knowledgeable of their effects. If the ink volume is not taken into consideration it could result in over-saturation of your media leading to unpredictable results.

25 Chapter 10. Working with fonts

In your application you can select any font that is in your System Folder’s ‘Fonts’ folder. To see that font on-screen you only need its bitmap represen- tation. In order to print a font on your HP DesignJet 2500CP you have several options: Resident Fonts - If you use a Printer Font, i.e. a font that is in the printer’s ROM, its representation is taken directly from the printer, there is no need for the host to send its PostScript description. Downloaded Font in the printer - If you have the outlined representation (either PostScript or TrueType) of a font in your Macintosh, you can download it either to the printer’s RAM or hard disk. The font is then resi- dent in the printer and at printing time its representation is taken from the printer. PostScript font definitions will remain in the hard disk after powering off, while those in RAM will be lost. Fonts Downloaded in the PostScript job - If you try to print a font that is neither resident in the printer nor previously downloaded to it, the driver downloads it at print time and releases it after the job is finished. If the outlined version of the font is present in the System Folder, it will be the one downloaded. The driver will only download a bitmap representation of the font if it is the only representation of the font available, pixeling will result when it is scaled. Depending on the number of different fonts you are sending in the Post- Script job, you may run out of memory. To avoid this situation you can either download fonts prior to printing, or you can use the ‘Unlimited Downloadable Fonts in a Document’ option available in the ‘Page Setup > Options’ dialog box.

Printer Fonts Your printer contains at least 35 PostScript fonts, in some countries this number will be more. If you wish to download additional fonts to your printer, you can use the Download Fonts feature in the HP LaserJet Utility. The downloaded fonts that are stored in the printer's memory (RAM) will stay in your printer until you perform a function that erases them, such as turning off your printer.

Right master page Win Printer Driver - Ver 3.0 1/22/97 19:15 c10mac.fra

HP DesignJet Printing Guide Chapter 10. Working with fonts 26

PostScript Fonts If your document uses PostScript fonts which are in your computer but not in the printer, your driver will, at print time, send the PostScript font definition as part of the PostScript file to be printed. The PostScript font definition is flushed from your printer memory when printing ends.

Screen Fonts When you create a document, the text characters you see on your screen are screen fonts. They allow you to see what your document will look like when (WYSIWYG = "What you see is what you get"). Screen fonts to match the 35 PostScript printer fonts were automatically added to your system when you installed your printer driver. However, if a Macintosh screen font does not have a corresponding PostScript font in the printer, the driver will send a bitmap version of that font to the printer. The quality of the bitmap font may be poor. You may wish to substitute a PostScript font for the Macintosh screen font. PostScript screen fonts will have higher resolution and will print faster than Macintosh screen fonts.

Adobe Type Manager Adobe Type Manager (ATM) is a utility that uses information in a printer font to scale the corresponding screen font to a selected size. If you have at least one point size of a screen font on your system, ATM can easily create various point sizes of that same font. When you use ATM, you conserve disk space as you don't have to install numerous bitmap screen fonts on your system. Addition- ally, the characters which ATM creates are of high quality. ATM works with Type 1 fonts only. If you are do not have the QuickDraw GX extension you may not have the ATM utility. It can be purchased separately for use with the PSPrinter driver.

TrueType Fonts You can use TrueType fonts with your printer, your printer has a built-in True- Type rasterizer.

TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION

The scale factor I set in the Page Setup dialog box has no effect when I print. Problem: Your application does not allow you to print to the paper size you want to use, so you use a scale setting to create the desired size. Solution: The scale setting in the Page Setup dialog box belongs to the driver and will, in most cases, allow you to increase the size of the image you have in your application. However, not all applications behave in the same way and your application may overide the effect of the driver´s scale setting. The solu- tion is to use the printer´s front panel scaling feature. This feature is described in the printer´s documentation which covers Page Format options.

You can't find the "PSPrinter" or the "HP DJ 2500CP GX" icon in the Chooser Problem: The printer's icon does not appear in the Chooser. Solution: Ensure that you have only one System Folder on your Macintosh and reinstall the software ("HP DesignJet 2500CP PostScript Drivers for Macin- tosh" disk). You can't find the printer name in the Chooser Problem: Your printer's name does not appear in the list of printer names in the Chooser. Solution: Choose one of the following solutions: • Make sure your printer is on and in the "Ready" state. • Make sure your cable is connected to the "Printer Port" of your Macintosh, if using LocalTalk. • Make sure all cables and connector boxes are firmly connected. • Make sure all connector boxes are properly terminated. • Make sure that AppleTalk is on (the button next to Active is highlighted in the Chooser). • If the printer resides on a network with multiple zones, make sure the correct zone is selected from the AppleTalk Zones box in the Chooser.

29 • Make sure the printer has not been renamed since it last appeared in the Chooser. • Make sure you first selected the PSPrinter/DesignJet printer driver icon in the Chooser. • Make sure the printer's front panel is set to either: "Lang = PostScript" or "Lang = Automatic".

Your document didn't print to the intended printer Problem: You sent your document to the printer, but when you went to retrieve it, it wasn't in the output tray. Solution: Choose one of the following solutions depending on your system configuration: • Check the selected printer name in the Chooser. • Non-GX: check the PrintMonitor application to see if an error occurred during printing. • GX: double-click on the DTP (DeskTop Printer) to open its print queue. Verify that the file is: not present, still printing, and that there is no error.

You can't use your Macintosh while a printer status message is on your screen Problem: After you sent your print job to the printer, a printer status message appeared on your screen. The message stayed on your screen until your document finished printing. You couldn't continue your work until after your document printed. Solution: Turn Background Printing On in the Chooser. When background printing is off and you send a print job to the printer, the printer status message will stay on your screen until your document has completed printing. You can't continue your work until the message clears. With back- ground printing on, the message is redirected to the PrintMonitor and you can continue working while the printer is printing your job.

Your EPS file doesn't print with the correct fonts. Problem: You created an EPS file and then saved it. However, your application isn't downloading the fonts included in that EPS file to the printer. Solution: This is a problem that occurs with only some applications. Try down- loading the fonts contained in the EPS file before printing the saved EPS file.

The colors on the printed output do not match the colors on your computer screen Problem: When the printer receives a color file, it goes through an adjustment process to try to match the color on the printed output to the color on the computer screen. Sometimes the printer cannot match the colors as closely as wanted. Solutions: • Ensure you are using ‘PostScript Color Matching’ and ‘Printer Default’ in the Print pop-up menu in the Print Options dialog box. The printer will make adjustments to match the colors. • Check your ‘Print setup’ dialog box to make sure all settings are adjusted correctly.

Each time I switch on my Macintosh I see the "Important! To complete the installation of the HP DesignJet printing ....." message Problem: When you first installed the HP DesignJet 2500CP PostScript Drivers for Macintosh" software and restarted your Macintosh you saw a message which reminded you to complete the installation of the HP DesignJet printing software. When you clicked on OK this message should have depos- ited itself in your "Trash" container, but for some reason this has not happened, maybe the message file was already there and a duplicate file could not be deposited in the "Trash". Solution: Open the “Startup folder” in your “System folder”, drag the “DesignJet Cleanup” file to the “Trash”, then empty the "Trash".
