Abstract News is important. It gives us the information we need to make decisions, provides common ground to share with others around us, and helps us become global citizens. However, there are many important stories we shy away from because we lack the background needed to understand them. Some of the most important news stories we encounter-like the Israel- Palestine conflict, the recent unrest in Ukraine, or the ongoing Ebola outbreak-are complex and require context to understand. Traditionally, news relies on a storytelling structure called the inverted pyramid, where key facts are introduced in the first paragraph, with subsequent paragraphs providing background information. This structure worked well for the era of paper-based journalism, so the story could be shortened to fit space constraints without compromising emerging facts. But is this the way that news should be now, or is this the result of using ink and paper procedures in a world where digital technologies allow for more flexibility? This thesis presents FOLD, a publishing platform that uses visual structure to address the problem of including context alongside stories. FOLD allows writers to tell stories by weaving together different pieces of information from across the web in the form of "cards." There are two types of cards: narrative cards, and context cards. Narrative cards are arranged vertically to form the "backbone" of a story. Context cards are positioned perpendicular to the narrative cards, providing alternate axes for reading. The use and reception of this tool within the context of a 3-month public beta is discussed, and opportunities for future work are presented. Introduction 1.1 Motivation At its best, the World Wide Web provides us with breaking news, thoughtful analyses, and connections to people who live elsewhere and whose ideas we might not otherwise encounter. Though access to the Internet is unevenly distributed, there are currently an estimated 3 billion Internet users-more than 40% of the world's population.1 Hyperlinks, the structure at the core of the Web, connect documents and elements together to build a network of information and context. The influx of new web documents and connections between them has grown exponentially, but this growth leads to other problems. There is both too much information for one person to reasonably process, and important information that goes overlooked.

Abstract Purpose This article focuses on a designed research methodology to distil existing research findings from an ESRC/AHRC funded Japan/UK network on location-based Virtual Reality (VR) experiences for children in order to generate new knowledge. Design/methodology/approach The structured co-production methodology was undertaken in three stages. These were: (1) a collaborative workshop which produced a series of collage narratives, (2) collaborating with a non-human entity in the form of a digital coded tool to reconfigure the workshop responses and mediate the hierarchy of roles, (3) the co-production of a zine as a collaborative reflection method, which shared via postal service enabled a dialogue and exchange of round robin interventions by the network members. Findings The analysis of the data collected in this study highlighted five themes that could be used by other researchers on a wide range of projects. These were: (1) Knowing through making, (2) The importance of process, (3) Beyond linear representations, (4) Agency of physical materials, (5) Agency of digital code. Research limitations/implications The context of the study being undertaken during the first phase of the global pandemic, revealed insight into a method of co-production that was undertaken under emergency remote working conditions.

I will start by reprinting and (re)analyzing the narrative typology presented in my "Second Person Fiction," which attempts to revise and mediate between the Genettean and Stanzelian models. The diversity and inde- terminacy of second-person writing will be illustrated by a number of examples from very different sectors of the typology. I shall argue that second-person fiction does not correlate with a specific "narrative situation," and that the category "person" does not constitute a theoretically meaningful concept. A second area for investigation will be the typical ways in which second-person fiction can be said to undermine realist narrative parameters and frames. As a consequence second-person fiction helps to deconstruct standard categories of narratological enquiry. Illustrations of this point will be taken from Gabriel Josipovici's novel Contre-jour (1986) and from selected short stories.     THE ROUTLEDGE COMPANION TO REMIX STUDIES The Routledge Companion to Remix Studies comprises contemporary texts by key authors and artists who are active in the emerging field of remix studies. As an organic interna- tional movement, remix culture originated in the popular music culture of the 1970s, and has since grown into a rich cultural activity encompassing numerous forms of media. The act of recombining pre-existing material brings up pressing questions of authen- ticity, reception, authorship, copyright, and the techno-politics of media activism. This book approaches remix studies from various angles, including sections on history, aes- thetics, ethics, politics, and practice, and presents theoretical chapters alongside case studies of remix projects. The Routledge Companion to Remix Studies is a valuable resource for both researchers and remix practitioners, as well as a teaching tool for instructors using remix practices in the classroom. YouTube is a technological platform, an economic system, and a means of social affiliation and expression. In this dissertation, I contribute to ongoing debates on the social, political, and economic effects of technological change by focusing on the bodily and emotional labor performed and archived on the site in videos, comments sections, and advertisements. In particular I look at comments and fan video as social paratexts which shape dance reception and production through policing genre, citationality, and legitimacy; position studio dance class videos as an Internet screendance genre which entextualizes the pedagogical context through creative documentation; and analyze the use of dance in online advertisements to promote identity-based consumption. Taken together, these inquiries show that YouTube perpetuates and reshapes established modes and genres of production, distribution, and consumption. These phenomena require an analysis that accounts for their multivalence and the ways the texts circulating on YouTube subvert existing categories, binaries, and hierarchies. A cyclical exchange—between perpetuation and innovation, subculture and pop culture, amateur and professional, the subversive and the neoliberal—is what defines YouTube and the investigation I undertake in this dissertation.

    Writing Visual Culture ISSN: 2049-7180 Comics and Control: Leading the Reading Jayms Nichols, University of Hertfordshire ABSTRACT In an age of easily accessible digital technologies the mainstream comic book form is undergoing a series of transformative changes as it is more and more frequently adapted to the screen. The nature of this adaptation seeks to use functionality offered by the digital environment to change the form of comics and accommodate a wider range of storytelling media. The interactive digital environment of gestural controlled touch screen devices offers a wealth of new possibilities in both the reading and creation of comics in the modern age. Animation and sound, for example, can be used by the author to control the pace at which the reader receives information and story elements. Likewise the lack of the physical page can allow for more types of transition from one panel, or set of panels, to the next. However, this focus on the control given to the author by new media storytelling implies that outside of the digital environment the reader is always in control. In fact, this is not the case. The use of page layouts and the turning of the page can be used to control what elements are revealed when and which parts of the story can be seen juxtaposed next to which other parts. This paper will compare and contrast the control methods of the digital and print forms to outline the sets of rules that we use to further understand the reading processes of comics and digital comics. The aim of the paper will be to identify specific methods by which the creator can control the pace of reading in both digital and print media.
