INTERNATIONAL DAY 2019 Written by: Cathy Lee (G10) On September 27th, YHIS’ fourth International Day started with a grand flag parade. Every elementary and secondary student spent about one month in their grades and advisory groups to research different countries' interesting facts and cultures such as songs, foods, and clothes. Also, parents prepared their booths full of various countries’ foods and symbols that show the cultures of the countries. Every student, parent and teacher had opportunities to get to know countries that they never knew before. The Student Council provided entertainment by running several game stations in the StuCo Carnival. Students also prepared various countries’ traditional performances under the direction of our YHIS music teacher, Ms. Chaffee.

Through the International Day, YHIS students were able to learn and feel unity of the globe through plentiful games, paintings, songs, and performances. CHINA'S NATIONAL HOLIDAY Written by: Olivia Kim (G8)

National Holiday is the second biggest holiday in China, running from October 1st to October 7th. It is the celebration of the founding of the Republic of China, which derives from the year 1949. It begins with the ceremony of raising the country's flag when the sun rises in Tiananmen Square in the Chinese capital of Beijing. In 1999, the Chinese government expanded the holiday to a week-long holiday, which is also known as the Golden Week. Since National Holiday is the second longest one in China, people have a lot of time to travel to their hometowns or other cities to celebrate. It is a highly valued time for Chinese people!

Nowadays, the Chinese celebrate with traditional ceremonies, such as playing drums and watching the dragon dance with their families and friends. Sometimes, groups of two people will compete with the dragon dance. There is no particular food that the Chinese eat for the celebration of National Holiday, but usually, they eat crabs and ducks, which are commonly found in autumn. TALENT SHOW 2019 Written by: Neo (G12)

YHIS hosted a talent show on October 11, 2019. It was the first talent show in YHIS history. Parents, staff, and students came to watch Elementary and Secondary students share some fantastic musical and skillful talents. There were seventeen participants who showed their wonderful talents from grade 1 to 11. There were various kinds of talents including playing piano, violin, drum set, and bells, as well as singing. During the break between the show, elementary teachers danced to the music called “The Git Up”. The teachers showed us their hidden dance skills.

High school members from 10th grade to 12th grade helped with the talent show. They set the stage for each participant, greeted the audience, and introduced the acts. Neo was an MC and successfully led the shows even though he didn’t have a script. The audience liked his improvisation. Additionally, three teachers and three parents came to judge the shows. The judges enjoyed the acts and at the same time, they worked very hard to decide on the winners. Afterward, the judges decided on four winners. The winners were the acts of jump rope, piano playing, and traditional Chinese dance.

Overall, the show laid a foundation of school unity which we will continue to build on throughout the year. Students, parents and staff all had an enjoyable time, and the first talent show was a perfect way to show and grow the four learning outcomes: Purpose, Connection, Courage, and Service. SPIRIT DAYS Written by: Elly (G8)

On October 16, 2019, YHIS students and staff celebrated Superhero Spirit day! of the Students dressed as Snow White, Superman, Batman and many more. Some of the elementary students wore long and shiny dresses.

Mr. Kim, the secondary STEM teacher, commented that through the YHIS spirit day, he was able to feel like a part of the school by dressing up in character with students and staff. He also said that YHIS Spirit day can be improved if more students would actively participate. He emphasized how happiness and flexible hearts are the most important things in our life. As students participate in the spirit days, the flexible atmosphere will affect the students in positive ways. Mr. Kim also suggested to clothing exchange Spirit day where students exchange clothes with others.

Mrs. Bond, a third-grade teacher, remarked about the creativity of students on Spirit Day. Students showed their various creative sides as they expressed themselves through different characters. She also commented that YHIS Spirit days can be improved if more students actively participate. Student Council members can lead the secondary students to enthusiastically participate and also announce the date of the spirit days a month before in order to give students more time to prepare. She recommended having Disney character day, twin day, and generational day where students dress up in different generations, such as elders or babies. Q U A R T E R 2 2 0 1 9 | P A G E 5

AYI APPRECIATION DAY Written by: Dennis (G10)

On October 17, YHIS had Ayi Appreciation Day for around an hour in the morning. The purpose of the event was to show gratitude to all the people working in our school. High school students who are enrolled in the Service and Leadership class, including all the students from 10th to 12th grade, participated in different ways to prepare for this event.

Ayis are the people (cleaners, securities, etc) who work for our school harder than anyone else, although they are not our teachers. Every day, they clean the whole school thoroughly from the stairways, corridors, to the classrooms, and bathrooms. Some of them work as security at the main entrance to make sure our school is secured without any intruders sneaking inside. Thanks to their effort, whenever we go to either the bathroom or anywhere else at the school, it’s always clean and provides us with a pleasant environment to study. They take charge of such an important role for our school. Without their contributions, there would be lots of inconveniences and difficulties going on. Despite contributions Ayis are putting into our school, there are sometimes students that are ignorant of what they’re doing. Therefore, the Service and Leadership class wanted the school to be aware of Ayis’ efforts by holding an Ayi Appreciation Day.

Three weeks before the event, students started to prepare and think of the best way to express thanks to Ayis. The plan was to interview different kinds of teachers and grades from first grade to ninth grade and to film them saying a thanks message to the Ayis, then to show the video edited with all the people’s thanks messages together. Mr. Jeffers, the instructor of Service and Leadership class helped to prepare a variety of foods for the Ayis to enjoy. At the event, students met many Ayis, and had time to talk with them and get to know each other. Different kinds of foods like soups, breads, dumplings, and drinks were provided for Ayis, and the event ended with showing the thank you video. Daniel Jung, 10th grade, who was an editor for the video, commented that although he had to spend a lot of time editing for the video until midnight, it was such a meaningful time for him, and he was glad Ayis enjoyed the video.

If you’re walking down the corridor, and you see one of our school’s cleaner or security helpers, try to say “Thanks!” to them. It doesn’t have to be a long sentence, but just a short message is enough. Ayis would definitely appreciate it! Q U A R T E R 2 2 0 1 9 | P A G E 6

HS ISC VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT Written by: Dennis (G10)

From October 17th to 20th, YHIS and YIA secondary students participated in the ISC volleyball tournament held at Wuxi International School. It’s especially meaningful this year since it’s the first tournament where YHIS and YIA students got to play together as one team. All ISC schools participated in the tournament, including our school and five other schools: WYIS, TIS, ISW, ISQ, and CDIS.

Thursday was the opening day of the tournament, and unfortunately our team wasn’t able to arrive on time for the first match due to travel delays. Although we didn’t have time to warm up, both the boys and girls teams put 100% of their energy into the game, but sadly weren't able to pull out a win.

Our teams played as hard as they could over the next few days. With only a few secondary students at our school, the team has practiced hard for months before the tournament. They didn’t hesitate to throw their bodies to dig the ball; they encouraged each other although they lost points. When the team became exhausted, other team members shouted out, “One, two, three, SHARKS!” No one gave up until the scoreboard reached 25. Unfortunately, even though the teams showed great improvements and plays throughout every game, they couldn’t obtain a victory. However, winning the game isn’t the most important thing, but that the team successfully showed cooperation and communication with each other. During the final matches on Sunday, both teams had close matches, but ended in 6th place.

There was a Sportsmanship Award, which is an honorable award given to the team with the best manners throughout the whole tournament. The YHIS boys won it! Receiving a sportsmanship award was very meaningful because YHIS has a shorter history and doesn’t have many students compared to other iSC schools.

One of the participants from the boys’ volleyball team, Ben Jung, said “Although we weren’t able to win a match, I feel glad that all of the YIA and YHIS students were successful in cooperating and were more united. ISC MS SOCCER TOURNAMENT Written by: Neo (G12)

From October 24th~27th, YHIS held the iSC Middle School Soccer Tournament, as we do every year. All the players from the iSC schools in China gathered together in Yantai to compete with each other and enjoy the time together.

During the season, the YHIS boys and girls persevered through tiredness, injuries, and hard losses. Despite the fact that they didn’t have any substitute players, they continued to work hard as a team. In all of their matches, they showed heart, courage, and determination for striving to play their best.

The team captain of the girls’ team, Victoria L., made a lot of super saves, and Grace S. was an invincible defense. While their final match of the tournament ended in a 1-0 loss, the girls played their best game. On Thursday and Friday, the boys held on for a 1-1 draw against Wuxi and endured three lopsided losses. Coach Bond challenged the boys to believe that they could score a goal. During the first half, Coach Bond put Faisal in as a substitute. Throughout the tournament, Faisal came off the bench to play a multitude of positions as needed. He always had a positive attitude and a willingness to work hard. Shortly before halftime, JiHoon Kim passed across the penalty box to Faisal, who trapped the ball and shot it into the goal. With a dedicated defense and a lot of outstanding saves from team captain Kevin Jeon, the Sharks held on for the 1-0 victory!

The tournament’s Sportsmanship Trophies were awarded based on the opinions of the opposing coaches and match referees. The boys and girls were recognized for not only playing hard, but also for playing in the right way and remaining positive despite the gap of the scores. They represented YHIS very well and have so much to be proud of.

Mr. Bond wants to thank our many parents who volunteered to serve during the tournament and cheer on our teams. We are blessed to be a part of such a supportive and loving community. Q U A R T E R 2 2 0 1 9 | P A G E 8

LOCAL MS SOCCER TOURNAMENT- WEIHAI Written by: Victoria (G7)

On October 12, the YHIS middle school soccer team participated in a local soccer tournament held in Weihai. The boys’ team played against three other teams from St. Paul , Weihai, and Yew Wah, and the girls’ team played two other teams from Weihai and Yew Wah.

In the early morning at 6:10am, the bus picked up all the YHIS players and they headed to Wei Hai with snacks and excitement. Weihai has a big field like Aihua’s and was split into two halves to have both girls and boys teams play at the same time.

The first girls team match was a win against Weihai with a score of 2:0! The second game was a tie against Yew Wah. Then the girls played the same teams again after lunch. Frank, a 6th grade player from the Sharks said, “We didn’t win but we almost won against Yew Wah.” Meeya, a 6th grade player from the girls Sharks said, “I mostly enjoyed the teamwork we had!”

After the tournament judges gave out trophies and headed back to Yantai, but sadly got stuck in a traffic jam for an hour. On the bus, they sang and played. It was a fun time! Q U A R T E R 2 2 0 1 9 | P A G E 9

Halloween is a traditional celebration that started in Europe hundreds of years ago. In the past, people believed that on October 31st, the boundary line of dead people's world and living people's world breaks down. As a result, ghosts from the world of death come back to the world of the living. To make the spirits leave the world of the living, people wore costumes of ghosts to try to scare them away.

Nowadays, people also wear pretty, funny, scary costumes, and even dress up as historical figures for Halloween. They tell each other scary ghost stories, watch horror movies, and enjoy parties. Children also go trick-or-treating dressed up in costumes and receive candy. It is a fun time for family and friends!

BOOK REVIEW : THATCHED COTTAGE(草房⼦) Written by: Victoria (G7)

Thatched cottage is a novel written by Cao Wenxuan, published in 1997. This is a story of a moving childhood in the countryside in the early 1960s in Yau Ma Tei. It is told from the perspective of Sansang over a six-year period in Elementary school. Sansang is a happy child, with a headmaster for a father, a farmer as a mother, and a lovely sister. The novel tells the story of five children: Sansang, four other children, and their Chinese teacher.

The first chapter tells about a bald boy. His name actually comes from how tall he is. Like a crane stands tall in a flock of birds, so they call him "Bald Crane". He is fond of mischief. He teases teacher and other peers. All his teachers are frustrated with him, but even bad students can do good things! The most impressive talent he has is his musical and artistic abilities, which he reveals at a concert performance. He has a mysterious special existence.

"When I look at the world, I'm pessimistic, but when I look at people, I am optimistic," said Carl Rogers, a famous psychologist. Psychology is correlated with many fields, such as the medical and scientific fields. It is the study of conscious and unconscious phenomena, including thought processes and emotions of people. Psychology is significant to us because it is an aid in helping people who have mental pain and exhaustion to relax and take care of their mental health. Since all aspects of our lives are connected to human emotions, minds, or thoughts, psychology is an integral study. One of the most famous psychologists is Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, a clinical method for treating psychopathology through dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalyst. He showed people how to influence and cure others who are disheartened and unfortunate. Psychology is very significant not only to human societies, but also to individuals. The psychological effects influence numerous fields. As a result, I believe we should all study deeper into psychology.

PSYCHOLOGISTS : SIGMUND FREUD & JEAN PIAGET Written by: Shaina (G12) Sigmund Freud is one of the most famous psychologists in the world. He was an Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis. He found a method to treat patients who have certain mental problems by having conversations between patients and psychoanalysts. One article comments that “Freud believed that people could be cured by making conscious the patients' unconscious thoughts and giving motivations to the patients, thus gaining 'insight'.” He gave great influences to a lot of people by developing many theories about human minds in the field of psychology.

Jean Piaget is a Swiss psychologist known for children development in which he necessitated the education of children. He developed four stages of cognitive development: sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete, and formal. Sensorimotor is the first step from birth of the children to age two. Children in this step feel and move through their senses. Preoperational stage is the second stage, starting from age two to age seven. Yet, children do not understand about the world a lot and cannot think logically. The third stage is the concrete stage, from age seven to eleven which in this period, children can start to think and understand by themselves, but there are still some limitations on physical actions. The last stage of cognitive development is the formal stage, which happens from age eleven to sixteen and above. Children in this stage can have a thoughtful mind and critical thinking. ISC TEACHER CONFERENCE 2019 Written by: Elly (G8)

The iSC Teacher Conference was held at YHIS from November 14 to November 16, 2019. All the teachers working for iSC schools came together for this conference! The purpose was to discuss and learn ways to improve their teaching and find the most effective ways to teach students.

Mr. Price commented that the iSC Teacher Conference is great for learning new things. Teachers can discover how others teach and absorb these good methods so that they can help students to learn and grow. Ms. Carroll mentioned that the conference is a very helpful meeting time with others as she continues to grow as a teacher. She pointed out how the speakers gave tips in teaching, influencing, and leading students.

TEACHER OF THE MONTH Written by: Frank Lee (G6)

Ms. McKenzie Evans is the teacher of the month for October. She is a ninth and tenth grade ELA teacher at YHIS and YIA. She grew up in Northern Virginia and graduated from Nyack College in New York. She has been to India, England, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Cambodia, Canada, Italy, and China. She was impressed by different things in each country and loved learning about different cultures. Ms. Evans chose to work with iSC because she firmly believes in teaching with a perspective that is both professional and values-centered. She loves collaboration, creative problem solving, and engaging students through interactive activities.

She has worked in our school for a month and a half. When she was young, her goal was to be a teacher. She became a teacher because she wanted to work with students during a time when they form their identities. She wants to work with students as they become critical thinkers, and reflect on who they are and what they can contribute to the world. She commented that “the world is broken in many ways, but it is also beautiful.” She wants to “prepare students to find joy in the brokenness of the world and to thrive in its beauty.” She added that “through literature, students can find the beauty of the world”. OCTOBER: STUDENT OF THE MONTH Written by: Kate (G7) Q. What do you think is the best part about yourself? A. I like to make other people that I meet feel comfortable, especially when they are new. Even when we meet for the first time, I act like I am a friend of him/her for a long time, then become good friends. I am also good at making two people who fight to get along with each other again.

Q. How did you feel when you first came to YHIS? A. When I first came to YHIS, I couldn't adapt, and Emma, my friend, adapted faster than me, so she helped me. I also get along with her friends.

Q. How do you feel about YHIS now? A. I think YHIS is a good school because of our delicious cafeteria food and kind teachers.

Q. What was the hardest moment in your life? A. It was hard for me to make new friends here at YHIS, but after I got used to it, I found some new friends.

What do you think of Lisa? Patrick: I think Lisa is really good at ceramics, so she helps me a lot. Tommy: Lisa is unique and special. Kate: She is very friendly, and she makes peoples to feel comfortable and joyful. David: She is active and positive. Frank: I think she is really good at ceramics.

NOVEMBER : STUDENT OF THE MONTH Written by: Aaron (G9)

Faten is a 9th grader who is a new student to YHIS. She is from Saudi Arabia and speaks Arabic. Arabic is an interesting language because it is actually read from right to left. Also, the Arabic numbers are different than the numbers we use in Korean, Chinese, or English. Faten has three younger brothers, but she does not have any sisters. Her hobbies are playing volleyball and playing a video game called "Fortnite." Faten played for the YHIS girls' volleyball team! Faten's favorite ice cream flavor is chocolate because it is sweet and delicious. Her favorite colors are blue and purple. Faten’s favorite things about YHIS are her friends and music class. She enjoys music class (choir) because it is fun. She also mentioned that the students, her friends, and teachers in our school are very kind and helpful.
