The highlight was the group’s encounter with a group of 6 Manta Rays while snorkelling. We enjoyed a morning’s excitement as the Mantas appeared and disappeared alongside us, their huge mouths wide open as they fed on the plankton, with all of the group getting fantastic close-up views! Every morning and evening, the group enjoyed a pre-breakfast and pre-dinner snorkel on coral reefs, where the colour and variety of fish was wonderful! Regal Angelfish, parrotfish, sea cucumbers, many different types of butterflyfish and wrasses, Maldive Anemonefish, reef squid, triggerfish, Moorish Idols, both White- and Black- tipped Reef Sharks and Hawksbill Turtles were just a few of the highlights! Back on board, while cruising between atolls, islands and reefs, seven confirmed species of cetacean were seen: several groups of Spinner Dolphins (including one huge group of at least 500), Pan-tropical Spotted Dolphins, both Common and Indo- Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins, plus Fraser’s Dolphins, plus Risso’s Dolphins and two groups of Pilot Whales – the first being very inquisitive and spending an hour with us spy hopping alongside the boat! All in all, it was a wonderful trip that will never be forgotten. -

E-mails: [email protected], [email protected] 2Corresponding author Abstract Diadema setosum (Leske, 1778), a widespread tropical echinoid and key herbivore in shallow water environments is cur- rently expanding in the Mediterranean Sea. It was introduced by unknown means and first observed in southern Turkey in 2006. From there it spread eastwards to Lebanon (2009) and westwards to the Aegean Sea (2014). Since late 2016 spo- radic sightings of black, long-spined sea urchins were reported by recreational divers from rock reefs off the Israeli coast. Numerous attempts to verify these records failed; neither did the BioBlitz Israel task force encounter any D. setosum in their campaigns. Finally, a single adult specimen was observed on June 17, 2017 in a deep rock crevice at 3.5 m depth at Gordon Beach, Tel Aviv. Although the specimen could not be recovered, spine fragments sampled were enough to genet- ically verify the visual underwater identification based on morphology. Sequences of COI, ATP8-Lysine, and the mito- chondrial Control Region of the Israel specimen are identical to those of the specimen collected in 2006 in Turkey, unambiguously assigning the specimen to D. -

Animal Spot Animal Spot uses intriguing specimens from Cincinnati Museum Center’s collections to teach children how each animal is unique to its environment. Touch a cast of an elephant’s skull, feel a real dinosaur fossil, finish a three-layer fish puzzle, observe live fish and use interactives to explore how animals move, “dress” and eat. Case 1: Modes of Balance and Movement (Case design: horse legs in boots) Animals walk, run, jump, fly, and/or slither to their destination. Animals use many different parts of their bodies to help them move. Clark The echinoderms from the Marshall Islands recorded in this re- port were collected during Operation Crossroads by the Oceano- graphic Section of Joint Task Force One under the direction of Commander Roger Revelle in 1946, and by the Bikini Scientific Re- survey under the direction of Capt. Christian L. Engleman in 1947. The number of species of echinoderms, exclusive of holothurians, in these two collections is 80, represented by 2,674 specimens. Although many of these have not previously been recorded from these islands, a number known from the group were not found, while others that certainly occur there still remain undiscovered. Of the 80 species collected, 22 were found only in 1946 and 24 only in 1947; only 34, about 40 percent, were found in both years. It is therefore impossible to appraise the effects, if any, of the explosion of the atomic bombs. But the specimens of the 54 species collected in 1947 are all quite normal. On the basis of the scanty and inadequate data available it would seem that the bombs had no appreciable effect on the echinoderms. Some of the species are represented by young individuals only. This is always the case in any survey of the echinoderm fauna of any tropical region. A few localities are found to yield nothing but young individuals of certain species at a given time, or possibly unless collections are made over a series of years. -

This is a collaborative effort primarily between the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council, NMFS-Pacific Island Fisheries Science Center, Pacific Islands Regional Office, Division of Aquatic Resources (HI) Department of Marine and Wildlife Resources (AS), Division of Aquatic and Wildlife Resources (Guam), and Division of Fish and Wildlife (CNMI). This report attempts to summarize annual fishery performance looking at trends in catch, effort and catch rates as well as provide a source document describing various projects and activities being undertaken on a local and federal level. The report also describes several ecosystem considerations including fish biomass estimates, biological indicators, protected species, habitat, climate change, and human dimensions. Information like marine spatial planning and best scientific information available for each fishery are described. This report provides a summary of annual catches relative to the Annual Catch Limits established by the Council in collaboration with the local fishery management agencies.
