I have said much less about Fortitude our values - primarily because we haven’t thought that Emotional strengths that involve the will to succeed in there was anything to change, improve or recalibrate. the face of adversity, external or internal The wellspring from which they are taken is deep - Integrity and lasting. Oxley is a school founded on Christian - Courage principles and these find expression in so many of the - Persistence words below. Many of them are explicitly from the - Enthusiasm Old or New Testament. Others are derived from two - Resilience millennia of Christian philosophy and the catechism - Optimism of major Christian denominations. Oxley draws from - Confidence wisdom from wherever it is found and some of the concepts can be found highlighted in other faith Humanity traditions. Many philosophies, ideas and ethics in Interpersonal strengths that involve caring for others these words come from good people with a humanist and provide meaning or secular orientation. - Kindness - Love All of them were considered and synthesised into the - Respect form you see below by Peterson and Seligman in 2004. - Social awareness They are highlighted in their book ‘Character Strengths - Appreciation of beauty and excellence and Virtues’. The Oxley College Board, Headmaster - Gratitude and Executive at the time adapted them a little so that - Humour they segued in particular with Oxley’s tradition. For - Spirituality example the section on Fortitude refers specifically to - Respect for our natural environment the School’s motto ‘Patience and Fortitude’. As you read over them you can see them humming Justice away in the foreground of so much that we do. The Civic strengths that support a healthy community life values of wisdom and knowledge are connected with - Fairness our focus on enlightened academic rigour. The second - Leadership value, of fortitude, links to so much of what we do to - Teamwork ‘strive, stretch and stick’. The third and fourth values, - Service of humanity and justice, link to so much of our Ethics programme. This can be seen in our Service Learning Mindfulness programme and also many of the Ethics lessons in Character strengths that protect against excess Cornerstone. The last value - mindfulness - is also - Forgiveness appropriate in an age where anxiety and stress can - Humility be a response to the hyper connected and hyper busy - Self-discipline lives that we lead. Finding self discipline and stillness - Patience in the middle of this world is certainly a value we can increasingly cultivate.
