“Assert Myself To Eliminate The Hurt”: Black Youth In Urban America Marcyliena Morgan Harvard University (Draft – Please Do Not Quote) Marcyliena Morgan [email protected] Graduate School of Education Human Development & Psychology 404 Larsen Hall 14 Appian Way Cambridge, Massachusetts 02138 Office:617-496-1809 (617)-264-9307 (FAX) 1 Marcyliena Morgan Harvard University “Assert Myself To Eliminate The Hurt”: Black Youth In Urban America Insert the power cord so my energy will work Pure energy spurts, sporadic, automatic mathematic, melodramatic -- acrobatic Diplomatic, charismatic Even my static, Asiatic Microphone fanatic 'Alone Blown in, in the whirlwind Eye of the storm, make the energy transform and convert, introvert turn extrovert Assert myself to eliminate the hurt If one takes more than a cursory glance at rap music, it is clear that the lyrics from some of hip hop’s most talented writers and performers are much more than the visceral cries of betrayed and discarded youth. The words and rhymes of hip hop identify what has arguably become the one cultural institution that urban youth rely on for honesty (keeping it real) and leadership. In 1996, there were 19 million young people aged 10-14 years old and 18.4 million aged 15-19 years old living in the US (1996 U.S. Census Bureau). According to a national Gallup poll of adolescents aged 13-17 (Bezilla 1993) since 1992, rap music has become the preferred music of youth (26%), followed closely by rock (25%). Though hip hop artists often rap about the range of adolescent confusion, desire and angst, at hip hop’s core is the commitment and vision of youth who are agitated, motivated and willing to confront complex and powerful institutions and practices to improve their 2 world. -

Transcript for Charlamagne Tha God | Black Privilege (Episode 647) Full show notes found here: https://theartofcharm.com/647/ CHARLAMAGNE: I wont feel like Ive made it until I know my kids kids are good and I dont know if thats going to be financial or just leaving them something that I know that they can learn from two generations from now. Who knows. JORDAN: Welcome to The Art of Charm. Im Jordan Harbinger. Today were talking with my friend Charlamagne Tha God. Well get into who hes called that later on in the show. Him and I met years ago because of Robert Greene. He heard the Robert Greene episode of AoC, which was our seven year anniversary special. Weve actually been around for over 10 years now, to give you some timeframe here. When I started actually getting serious about the show, Charlamagne caught that and we got in touch and weve been in touch ever since then. He is a very popular radio show host with a nationally syndicated show and a very popular podcast as well. He wrote an excellent book called Black Privilege, which includes a lot of legit advice on detailing how he was able to take advantage of opportunities and become successful, despite his origin story, which well go over on the show as well. He used to sell crack. Were going to talk about how he broke out of the gravity of that situation and shifted into radio instead of ending up under a tree or dead or in prison. Well also discuss why Charlamagne things its important not to live someone elses expectations and how to figure out when expectations are actually your own, how to uncover how he reframed his upbringing to become an advantage instead of the other way around, and theres a lot in this. -

We would appreciate you not revealing the characters’ secrets in editorial or social postings without proper warning. The film is under embargo until Wednesday, February 21 at 10:30pm CET / 4:30pm EST / 1:30pm PST. Thank you. *** Short Synopsis A young woman is involuntarily committed to a mental institution where she is confronted by her greatest fear - but is it real or is it a product of her delusion? Long Synopsis Making a startling trip into thriller territory with Unsane, director Steven Soderbergh plunges audiences into the suspense and drama of a resilient woman’s (Claire Foy, The Crown) fight to reclaim her freedom even as she risks her own sanity. Scarred from the trauma of being stalked, quick-witted Sawyer Valentini (portrayed by Ms. Foy) has relocated from Boston to Pennsylvania for a new life. As her mother Angela (Academy Award nominee Amy Irving) misses her back home and her office job is hardly an ideal employment opportunity, Sawyer remains on edge following her two years of being terrorized. To consult with a therapist, she goes for follow-up treatment at the Highland Creek Behavioral Center. Sawyer’s initial therapy session at the suburban complex run by clinician Ashley Brighterhouse (Aimée Mullins, Stranger Things) progresses well — until she unwittingly signs herself in for voluntary 24-hour commitment. Unable to leave the premises, Sawyer finds herself in close quarters with previously committed hellion Violet (Juno Temple, The Dark Knight Rises) and savvy Nate (Jay Pharoah, Saturday Night Live), who is battling an opioid addiction. -
