The extraordinarily gifted jazz vocalist, Cécile McLorin Salvant, releasedWomanChild hot on the heels of her win at the International Vocal Competition. And the buzz has only grown since then. NPR is "knocked out," The New York Times says, "Ms. McLorin Salvant has it all," and Wynton Marsalis praises her "poise, elegance, soul, humor, sensuality, power, virtuosity, range, insight, intelligence, depth and grace.” The album has deservingly found its way onto numerous Best Of 2013 lists from NPR to The New York Times to Ann Powers to iTunes and garnered her first Grammy nomination. When Cécile McLorin Salvant arrived at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC to compete in the finals of the 2010 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, she was not only the youngest finalist, but also a mystery woman with the most unusual background of any of the participants. When she walked away with first place in the jazz world’s most prestigious contest, the buzz began almost immediately. If anything, it has intensified in the months leading up to the launch of her Mack Avenue Records debut, WomanChild. “I’ve never heard a singer of her generation who has such a command of styles,” remarks pianist Aaron Diehl. “She radiates authority,” critic Ben Ratliff wrote in The New York Times, and a few weeks later his colleague Stephen Holden announced that “Ms. McLorin Salvant has it all.... If anyone can extend the lineage of the Big Three—, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald—it is this 23-year-old virtuoso.” Cecile was born in Miami to French and Haitian parents where she embraced classical music as a child. She left the U.S. to study in France after high school and returned to win the Monk competition. She was signed to Mack Avenue Records for her first release and has garnered a Grammy nomination for 2013. A meteoric beginning for a new career.

Don’t miss this appearance by a soon to be vocal jazz legend! 7 P.M. Camp Hill Jazz Choral Group 8 P.M. Cecile McLorin Salvant with Aaron Diehl (p), Paul Sikivie (b) & Peter Van Nostrand (dr)

Sunday, May 25th, 2014 3p.m. Ehud Asherie & Ken Peplowski WITF Public Media Center 4801 Lindle Rd Harrisburg PA 17111 Price: $20 Adults - $16 Members - $10 Students This final concert in our Spring Concert Series features the dynamic pianist Ehud Asherie and woodwind giant Ken Peplowski in an intimate duo performance.

Ehud Asherie, "a master of swing and stride" (The New Yorker), is a jazz pianist who integrates the venerable New York piano tradition into his inventive style. Born in Israel in 1979, Asherie lived in Italy for six years before his family moved to New York. Though he began playing piano as a child, his passion for jazz came later—with a Thelonious Monk cassette tape—and his first visit to Smalls Jazz club in Greenwich Village. Largely self-taught, or rather, “old-schooled,” Asherie learned the ropes at Smalls, spending the wee small hours of his early teens becoming a fixture of the late- night jam sessions. Mentored by the late Frank Hewitt, Asherie began to develop “his virtuosity and his ear for clean, crisp lines“ (The Star-Ledger). Finding his home at Smalls, Asherie went from leading the Sunday night sessions to being featured, in 1999, with the Grant Stewart Quartet. Soon after, he headlined with his own trio, Trio 65, who went on to play a two-year engagement at the Rainbow Room, six nights a week. Steeped in the jazz milieu, absorbing the work of his contemporaries, Asherie grew to revere the lineage he evolved from. Having branched backwards in time, from bebop to stride, Asherie views jazz as a living art form, an organic thing: each standard tune open to a constant reinterpretation. It is this philosophy that caught the attention of world-class saxophonist and collaborator Harry Allen, who called Asherie “…modern yet traditional at the same time…in the most wonderful way.” . From Smalls to the Rainbow Room, from Lincoln Center to The Village Vanguard, Asherie has worked with a broad range of musicians: Howard Alden, Eric Alexander, Roy Ayers, Wycliffe Gordon, Scott Hamilton, Charles McPherson, Jane Monheit, Bob Mover, Ken Peplowski and Clark Terry. Asherie tours clubs and festivals around the world, including South America, Europe and Asia. He has released over ten albums, five as leader, including Organic (Posi-tone, 2010) and a solo album entitled Welcome to New York (Arbors, 2010). For a complete listing of albums, and more about Ehud Asherie, please visit www.ehudasherie.com

Growiing up in Cleveland, Ohio,Ken Peplowski played his first pro engagement when he was still in elementary school. “From my first time performing in public, I knew I wanted to play music for a living.” By the time Ken was in his early teens, he was experimenting with jazz and after a year of college, Ken joined the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra under the direction of Buddy Morrow. “I learned the discipline that goes with playing one-nighters every day for 48 weeks out of the year, and Buddy was a great, very generous bandleader.” Peplowski studied with the legendary saxophonist Sonny Stitt and in 1980, Ken moved to New York City. He joined Benny Goodman’s new band in 1984 and signed with Concord Records shortly after, recording 20 albums for them. He has played diverse venues - from small clubs to a sold out performance at the Hollywood Bowl and he has been featured on soundtracks of Woody Allen movies, guest soloing on many recordings. The litany of musicians Ken has collaborated with includes: Mel Torme, Leon Redbone, Charlie Byrd, Peggy Lee, George Shearing, Madonna, Hank Jones, Dave Frishberg, Rosemary Clooney, Tom Harrell, James Moody, Cedar Walton, Houston Person, Steve Allen, Bill Charlap, Woody Allen, Marianne Faithfull, Isaac Delgado & Erich Kunzel. Peplowski also does many workshops for students of all ages and is a Buffet-Crampon artist, and plays the R-13 clarinet, with a Portnoy mouthpiece and Van Doren German-cut reeds. He also plays a Yamaha tenor sax and a Berg Larsen mouthpiece. Ken Peplowski has recorded approximately 50 CDs as a soloist, and close to 400 as a sideman Ken is the current musical director of the Oregon Festival Of American Music (OFAM), and is a longtime performer/consultant to The Jazz Cruise, where he was placed into the Jazz Cruise Hall Of Fame in 2013. He resides in New York City with his wife, dog, and whatever children happen to be passing through. “Mr. Peplowski sounds the way (Benny) Goodman might if he had kept evolving, kept on listening to new music, kept refining his sound, polishing his craft, and expanding his musical purview into the 21st century.”– Will Friedwald in The Wall Street Journal, December 2012 In 2014, Ken was the recipent of the Sarasota Jazz Festival’s “Satchmo” award, given to him for his “unique and enduring contribution to the living history of jazz”. I'm sitting here at the first CPFJ concert of the 2014 season, and the word that keeps coming to playing mind is “joy.” Joey DeFrancesco on the B3 organ, Paul Bollenback on guitar, and recent addition trumpet! George Fludas on drums are ripping it up. Joey D is, in the words of Steve Rudolph introducing the trio, “probably the greatest organ player on the planet.” Joey promptly came out, sat down, sidled up to the mike, and answered: “PROBABLY????” Now I am sitting here at the end of the concert with absolutely no doubt in my mind: Joey DeFrancesco is, hands down, the greatest B3 player on the planet.

But what about this joy thing? Sure, there are lots of adjectives to describe great organ trios. You've probably heard them: burning, cooking, smoking, shredding. Sure, these guys did all of that, but there's something more to their playing, and I find myself feeling strangely happy. Perhaps it's the song choices. During the first set, we were treated to “Dannie's Tune” (a Joey D original), “Mack the Knife,”“Up Jumped Spring,”“Old Folks,” (featuring Joey on trumpet) and the Ray Charles classic “I Got a Woman.” The second set brought more of the same: “In Walked Bud,” a great version of “The Good Life” with references to the Phantom of the Opera, an amazing version of Quincy Jones' “One Hundred Ways” (who ever thought you could play THAT on a B3?), “Blues in Three,” and “Hackensack.” Joey even sang “I Thought About You.” These are all great songs, but I don't always feel so happy when others are playing them. What's going on here?

Maybe it's the musicianship. Joey DeFrancesco is lightning fast, with impeccable timing and a serious blues streak. Paul Bollenback is one of the most tasteful guitarists playing today. George Fludas is all over the drum kit. And when Joey pulled out a trumpet and sat at the keyboard playing the horn with his right hand and simultaneously accompanying with his left hand and feet on the bass line, I just about flipped. Yes the musicianship was awesome, but I've heard great musicianship before. Why am I so happy?

I think it's because THEY are. These guys just had some serious fun. It's written all over their faces. You can hear it in the spontaneity of their song choices… there was no preordained set list; they just played whatever they wanted in that moment on the bandstand. They took George & Paul requests. They hung with the audience during intermission, instead of going to the green room. These guys love to play, and I can feel it back here in the third row. You can feel a bit of it too. Go to friendsofjazz.org and check out the clip of “I Got a Woman” to see what I'm talking about.

Joy. Happiness. It's what's for dinner, baby.

JOIN THE CPFJ YOUTH BAND Director Ron Waters announced that rehearsals have started for the CPFJ Youth Band.

Please contact Mr. Waters at (717) 432-3109 or via email [email protected] - all young musicians with an interest in learning to improvise are welcome.

Our continuing dedication to jazz education led to the creation of the CPFJ Youth Band over 25 years ago. Directed by Ron Waters, the band is open to all school age musicians - grade school through high school. Mr. Waters prepares arrangements to suit the particular talents of the participants each year. All applicants are accepted without audition - Mr. Waters finds a niche for every instrumentalist and vocalist. The band’s rehearsals and concerts are scheduled year round including performances at the Central PA Jazz Festival, Jazz Picnic, and many other events. Not only do the students get wonderful experience playing in an improvising ensemble, but they get to meet kids from other schools who have the same interest in jazz. This ensemble offers a different experience than most High School Jazz Ensembles - it is not a place where the students simply read the notes on the page - all members learn to improvise and get valuable experience playing jazz standards and original music in a group setting. The Youth Band is also not restricted to the traditional big band instrumentation (trumpets, trombones, saxes & rhythm section) - all instruments are welcome - we have had almost every imaginable instrument….cello, accordion, oboe, flute, etc. in past bands.

The Youth Band plays all of our festivals and major events as well as many civic functions and concerts - come join the fun!! 89 CENTRAL PA JAZZ CAMP - JUNE 18-20, 2014

13 Track of the Month Paul Haidet

Remember back when records came with liner notes that gave information about what you were hearing on the album? I personally learned LOTS about music from reading those notes and then hearing it on the record. In this monthly column, the ViBE collides the new with the old by suggesting a tune to download from iTunes, Spotify, or your favorite music service, and providing “liner notes” from one of the CPFJ musicians or jazz enthusiasts. Enjoy! “East of the Village” by the Quintet from the album The Turnaround! Available on iTunes, Amazon, You Tube, and others.

In the liner notes to this album, Dexter Gordon described Mobley as the “middleweight champion” on tenor sax, referring to Mobley's smooth, round, and agile tone. The group on this cut was a first class quintet with Mobley on tenor, on trumpet, on piano, Butch Warren on bass, and on drums. “East of the Village” really allows Philly Joe to shine, featuring a clever shifting rhythmic pattern between Latin and straight swing beats. This device was favored by a number of musicians of the time, most notably . On the track, the group moves seamlessly through the shifting patterns, keeping the groove the whole way. Mobley was perhaps one of the most underrated tenor players in jazz when this was recorded in 1963, being eclipsed by the gigantic personalities of Coltrane and Rollins on the instrument. This tune shows that he can hold his own, with style.

“The Turnaround!” was recorded on March 7, 1963 and on February 5, 1965, and released on the Blue Note label. It features performances by Mobley with Donald Byrd, Herbie Hancock, Butch Warren and Philly Joe Jones from the earlier session and , , Paul Chambers and Billy Higgins from the latter recording date. We encourage you to use Youtube and other sources to explore the history of this great American art form - enjoy your time and listen!
