Let (S; H) be a general primitively polarized K3 surface. We prove the existence of irreducible curves in jOS (nH)j with Ak-singularities and corresponding to regular points of the equisingular deformation locus. Our result is optimal for n = 1. As a corollary, we get the existence of irreducible curves in jOS (nH)j of geometric genus g ≥ 1 with a cusp and nodes or a simple tacnode and nodes. We obtain our result by studying the versal deformation family of the m-tacnode. Moreover, using results of Brill-Noether theory on curves of K3 surfaces, we provide a regularity condition for families of curves with only Ak-singularities in jOS (nH)j: 1. Introduction Let S be a complex smooth projective K3 surface and let H be a globally generated line bundle of sectional genus p = pa(H) ≥ 2 and such that H is not divisible in Pic S. The pair (S; H) is called a primitively polarized K3 surface of genus p: It is well-known that the moduli space Kp of primitively polarized K3 surfaces of genus p is non-empty, smooth and irreducible of dimension 19: Moreover, if (S; H) 2 Kp is a very general element (meaning that it belongs to the complement of a countable ∼ union of Zariski closed proper subsets), then Pic S = Z[H]: If (S; H) 2 Kp, we denote S by VnH;1δ ⊂ jOS(nH)j = jnHj the so called Severi variety of δ-nodal curves, defined as the Zariski closure of the locus of irreducible and reduced curves with exactly δ nodes as singularities. -

The interest of projective geometry arises in several visual comput- ing domains, in particular computer vision modelling and computer graphics. It provides a mathematical formalism to describe the geometry of cameras and the associated transformations, hence enabling the design of computational ap- proaches that manipulates 2D projections of 3D objects. In that respect, a fundamental aspect is the fact that objects at infinity can be represented and manipulated with projective geometry and this in contrast to the Euclidean geometry. Real Rank Two Geometry Anna Seigal and Bernd Sturmfels Abstract The real rank two locus of an algebraic variety is the closure of the union of all secant lines spanned by real points. We seek a semi-algebraic description of this set. Its algebraic boundary consists of the tangential variety and the edge variety. Our study of Segre and Veronese varieties yields a characterization of tensors of real rank two. 1 Introduction Low-rank approximation of tensors is a fundamental problem in applied mathematics [3, 6]. We here approach this problem from the perspective of real algebraic geometry. Our goal is to give an exact semi-algebraic description of the set of tensors of real rank two and to characterize its boundary. This complements the results on tensors of non-negative rank two presented in [1], and it offers a generalization to the setting of arbitrary varieties, following [2]. A familiar example is that of 2 × 2 × 2-tensors (xijk) with real entries. What Is Algebraic Geometry? Linear Algebra can be seen (in parts at least) as the study of systems of linear equations. In geometric terms, this can be interpreted as the study of linear (or affine) subspaces of Cn (say). Algebraic Geometry generalizes this in a natural way be looking at systems of polynomial equations. Their geometric realizations (their solution sets in Cn, say) are called algebraic varieties. Many questions one can study in various parts of mathematics lead in a natural way to (systems of) polynomial equations, to which the methods of Algebraic Geometry can be applied. Algebraic Geometry provides a translation between algebra (solutions of equations) and geometry (points on algebraic varieties). The methods are mostly algebraic, but the geometry provides the intuition. Compared to Differential Geometry, in Algebraic Geometry we consider a rather restricted class of “manifolds” — those given by polynomial equations (we can allow “singularities”, however). For example, y = cos x defines a perfectly nice differentiable curve in the plane, but not an algebraic curve. In return, we can get stronger results, for example a criterion for the existence of solutions (in the complex numbers), or statements on the number of solutions (for example when intersecting two curves), or classification results. -

Both results are over algebraically closed fields of characteristic 0 and their proofs are purely algebraic in nature. In the statement of the equivariant semi-stable theorem, besides giving the equivariant version of classic theorem, I shall describe more precisely what the base curve could be. To every singular reduced projective curve X one can associate many fine compactified Jacobians, depending on the choice of a polarization on X, each of which yields a modular compactification of a disjoint union of a finite number of copies of the generalized Jacobian of X. Weinvestigatethe geometric properties of fine compactified Jacobians focusing on curves having locally planar singularities. We give examples of nodal curves admitting non- isomorphic (and even nonhomeomorphic over the field of complex numbers) fine compactified Jacobians. We study universal fine compactified Jacobians, which are relative fine compactified Jacobians over the semiuniversal deforma- tion space of the curve X. MSc Lecture: Enumerative Geometry Lecture by Helge Ruddat; Exercises by Tim Gräfnitz; Tu & We 16:15 – 17:45 on Zoom Description Hermann Schubert developed an effective method for solving counting problems in geometry in his book "Kalkül der abzählenden Geometrie" that appeared in 1879. A basic example is the question “how many lines in R^3 meet four given lines in general position?”. Do you know the answer? The calculus is now known as “Schubert calculus”, see (1),(2),(3). Schubert calculus is immensely powerful, e.g. you can use it to find that the number of twisted cubic curves in 3-space that are tangential to 12 quadric surfaces is 5.819.539.783.680. Even though it clearly worked, for a long time it has been unknown what the theoretical basis for the calculus truly is, i.e. nobody knew why it worked. It became the famous Hilbert problem 15 to find a theoretical basis for Schubert calculus. This was looong time ago. Today we know that intersection theory, the spaces of stable maps and Gromov-Witten theory form the right theoretical framework that underlies Schubert calculus - though there are also competing alternative approaches like Donaldson-Thomas theory. The purpose of this lecture is to introduce the basics of Gromov-Witten theory with a particular view to mirror symmetry and thus the relationship with tropical curve counting. Prerequisites When taking this class, you should have some basic understanding of algebraic geometry or complex geometry or complex analysis, that is you should either know what an algebraic variety is or know what a complex manifold or Riemann surface is. -

Let X be an irreducible smooth projective curve of genus g > 2 defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic dif- ferent from two. We prove that the natural homomorphism from the automorphisms of X to the automorphisms of the symmetric product Symd(X) is an isomorphism if d > 2g − 2. Introduction Automorphisms of varieties is currently a very active topic in algebraic geom- etry; see [Og], [HT], [Zh] and references therein. Hurwitz’s automorphisms theorem, [Hu], says that the order of the automorphism group Aut(X) of a compact Riemann surface X of genus g ≥ 2 is bounded by 84(g − 1). The group of automorphisms of the Jacobian J(X) preserving the theta polariza- tion is generated by Aut(X), translations and inversion [We], [La]. There is a universal constant c such that the order of the group of all automorphisms of any smooth minimal complex projective surface S of general type is bounded 2 above by c · KS [Xi]. Ecole´ Polytechnique Fed´ erale´ de Lausanne Master’s Thesis in Mathematics Associating abelian varieties to weight-2 modular forms: the Eichler-Shimura construction Author: Corentin Perret-Gentil Supervisors: Prof. Akshay Venkatesh Stanford University Prof. Philippe Michel EPF Lausanne Spring 2014 Abstract This document is the final report for the author’s Master’s project, whose goal was to study the Eichler-Shimura construction associating abelian va- rieties to weight-2 modular forms for Γ0(N). The starting points and main resources were the survey article by Fred Diamond and John Im [DI95], the book by Goro Shimura [Shi71], and the book by Fred Diamond and Jerry Shurman [DS06]. The latter is a very good first reference about this sub- ject, but interesting points are sometimes eluded. In particular, although most statements are given in the general setting, the book mainly deals with the particular case of elliptic curves (i.e. with forms having rational Fourier coefficients), with little details about abelian varieties. On the other hand, Chapter 7 of Shimura’s book is difficult, according to the author himself, and the article by Diamond and Im skims rapidly through the subject, be- ing a survey. The goal of this document is therefore to give an account of the theory with intermediate difficulty, accessible to someone having read a first text on modular forms – such as [Zag08] – and with basic knowledge in the theory of compact Riemann surfaces (see e.g. [Mir95]) and algebraic geometry (see e.g. [Har77]). This report begins with an account of the theory of abelian varieties needed for what follows. -
