2015/18 Barking Town Centre Strategy Realising Barking’s full potential Foreword Town centres everywhere continue to play a key role in people’s quality of life, providing economic opportunities, employment and places to meet, relax and enjoy. Barking will become East London’s new cultural hub, provide a wide choice of good value homes, great places to meet and relax with significant new opportunities for work. With superb accessibility, a growing diverse population and development potential Barking is extremely well placed to continue its transformation over the coming years. We will work with partners to co-ordinate and drive the changes required to ensuring Barking becomes a town centre more people actively choose to live, work, learn and spend time in. High streets and town centres across the country are facing new challenges and there is a strong recognition that Barking will have to carve its own identity with a broader mix of functions based on retail and culture, but offering so much more. Barking Riverside, a new 11,000 home community will be served by a direct rail link to Barking - this is a superb opportunity for Barking but only if it offers the facilities and quality of Councillor Cameron Geddes environment which will attract and retain people.
