LA WALKYRIA ACTE I L'escena representa l'interior de la cabana de Hunding; al centre de la cabana hi ha un gran freixe que sobre­ surt per la teulada i que té una espasa clavada en el tronc. Una llar de foc, a una banda, i una taula al mig s'ofereixen a la vista en alçar-se el teló. Per una porta d'entrada arriba Siegmund, fatigat, i es deixa caure sobre una màrfega. Entra Sieglinde, estranyada en veure el foraster allí ajagut; Siegmund, extenuat, li demana aigua i ella va a buscar-ne en un corn i torna tot seguit. A les seves pre­ guntes, Sieglinde respon que aquella és la cabana de Hunding i que pot quedar-se fins que aquest vingui; després li ofereix un corn d'aiguamel. Més tard Sieg­ mund vol marxar, però ella el detura; un sentiment estrany els envaeix tots dos però en aquell moment arri­ ba Hunding i Sieglinde li explica l'arribada del foraster; Hunding confirma que la seva casa és aixopluc sagrat per a un hoste i que s'hi pot quedar. Fa seure Siegmund a taula i mentre Sieglinde serveix el sopar, li pregunta d'on ve. Siegmund explica que el seu nom és Wehwalt, nom que en alemany és una allusió al seu passat d'in­ fortunis; ell era fill del valent Llop, brau lluitador, però un dia en tornar a casa trobaren morta la mare i des­ apareguda una germana bessona de Siegmund. Les se­ ves explicacions posteriors convencen Hunding que Sieg­ mund és perillós i ha lluitat contra la seva gent. Quan Siegmund aHudeix al fet que és rebut malament a tot arreu Hunding li diu que si aquest és el seu destí, tampoc ell no podrà ésser amic seu i que es prepari a combatre l'endemà, per més que aquesta nit la sagrada llei de l'hospitalitat el tingui a cobert de tot atac. Sieg­ mund explica que ha perdut les armes en les seves llui­ tes, però Hunding no s'immuta; l'endemà pensa com­ batre contra ell i si no té armes més fàcilment serà derrotat. Sieglinde, en sentir la conversa, ha preparat un filtre narcòtic i l'ha fet beure a Hunding, Es retiren ambdós a dormir, deixant Siegmund davant la llar de foc; Sieg­ linde abans de retirar-se indica amb la mirada al jove que miri el tronc del freixe.     A Discography of the Choral Symphony by J. F. Weber In previous issues of this Journal (XV:2-3; XVI:l-2), an effort was made to compile parts of a composer discography in depth rather than breadth. This one started in a similar vein with the realization that SO CDs of the Beethoven Ninth Symphony had been released (the total is now over 701). This should have been no surprise, for writers have stated that the playing time of the CD was designed to accommodate this work. After eighteen months' effort, a reasonably complete discography of the work has emerged. The wonder is that it took so long to collect a body of information (especially the full names of the vocalists) that had already been published in various places at various times. The Japanese discographers had made a good start, and some of their data would have been difficult to find otherwise, but quite a few corrections and additions have been made and some recording dates have been obtained that seem to have remained 1.Dlpublished so far. The first point to notice is that six versions of the Ninth didn't appear on the expected single CD. Bl:lhm (118) and Solti (96) exceeded the 75 minutes generally assumed (until recently) to be the maximum CD playing time, but Walter (37), Kegel (126), Mehta (127), and Thomas (130) were not so burdened and have been reissued on single CDs since the first CD release. On the other hand, the rather short Leibowitz (76), Toscanini (11), and Busch (25) versions have recently been issued with fillers.

Signature:……………………………… Date:………………………. ABSTRACT Who is Nellie du Toit and what is the extent of her career as singer and voice teacher? The void in South African historiography in respect to the life and work of South African performing artists gave rise to investigate the career of Nellie du Toit. Known as one of South Africa’s most illustrious opera singers of the 1960’s and 1970’s, who made her career exclusively in South Africa, she is regarded as one of the most sought after voice teachers. Her career as singer spanned almost three decades. As voice teacher her career of over forty years is still ongoing. This study traces her biographical details chronologically beginning with her youth years in a very musical family. Her full-time music studies took place at the South African College of Music in Cape Town, from 1950 to 1952. Here her singing teacher Madame Adelheid Armhold and Gregorio Fiasconaro, head of the Opera School, were influential in laying the foundations for her career. After a period of over a year in England Du Toit was one of several young South African singers to contribute to pioneering opera in South Africa, often sung in the vernacular.
